Minori Scramble is one of those type of anime. It's quite unpopular, yet it's a cute and shiny gem yet to be discovered by others. The OVA honestly isn't a pure must-watch-or-die OVA, but it's an anime that leaves you with some satisfaction and a smile.
This is my first review! So I hope I don't screw up lol.
I'll follow the structure of making a review by MAL by starting of with the story. First things first, it's a comedy slice of life, so the story really isn't gonna be so dramatically twisty or anything. The plot is already summarized up in the anime description, so I don't need to go much detail into it, but that's it really. The OVA is mainly about how Tamaki can't handle Minori well and the penguin causes all sorts of trouble and mess whilst being a cute penguin in the town and neighborhood. It kinda also creates a cute relationship between the hatred-penguin girl and the robot penguin, since it was the father's intention to try and get Tamaki to like penguins again. It involves all sorts of fun events that leaves you smiling, even pass the point where it gets pretty ridiculous (Don't wanna say since it might spoil).
The art in this is really pretty. It's from an animation company by ufortable! I admire them alot because they make such lovely art and animation for stuff like Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/Zero. There wasn't any derpy animation used in this OVA. It was all colourful and smooth, epically the chasing scenes and when ruckus caused by Minori occurs. There's nothing much to say about the animation apart from that it's quite fascinating, for a slice of life it doesn't need to go anywhere close to "godly", so Minori Scramble has enough. To say though, the art-style isn't really the most outstanding thing you'll see, but it does have abit of uniqueness style compared to popular slice-of-lives.
Sound, yaaaay. The OP song is very cute, and it certainly fits the show quite well, and the ending song is a lovely listen too. The OST was very well used out during the OVA and fitted some scenes very, very well (One of them gives a really dramatic feel to a certain scene). Although I would say that the songs and OSTs used might be lovely, they weren't very memorable, or rather not memorable enough to be able to hum/whistle a melody that is connected to the show. Probably the ending though, because the song is pretty luuuuush for a music lover like me. Music aside though, the sound effects aren't really bad at all, and it was pretty effective for the most part. Voice actors were all good too! I don't really remember any voices that annoyed me, and Minori's voice is very cute, which fitted well.
Characters were cool. There is a few main characters that I'd say they're worth pointing out, but the others are Tamaki's parents and the people living in the neighborhood and who lives in the towns. Tamaki and Minori are the main attention though. They have good personalities given to them and they are likable. Minori, although a happy and lovely penguin, is given an unawareness of not knowing anything about the town, and doesn't know how much trouble it's caused. Tamaki is a cute girl with a outgoing personality, and I might as well mention Akira too, Tamaki's friend, who gets extremely distracted by anything particularly cute (Like Minori!).
Enjoyment is where I will explain the comedy of the show. It offers great comedy! There isn't really inside jokes or japanese jokes to explain, it's just slapstick, slice of life jokes in alot of places. The reactions of Tamaki are pretty funny at some places, and there really is unexpected turnabouts and scenes which will make you lol alot knowing how they even ended up in certain situations.
There's some other important things I must say about the show before I conclude. The first thing to say is that, although there is alot of positive aspects of the OVA, at the end of the day it isn't a show to be extremely hyped on and get hundreds of posters and figures covered in the room (Actually I don't think everyone does that anyway lol), but the message I'm saying is that; it's great, but not amazing. It has nice characters, sound and art but it's not to an extent where it's considered a "must-watch". It's not really a memorable show that can last for centuries, but it doesn't mean that it's not memorable. Rather, you could say that if you don't have any shows you're really watching at the moment, Minori Scramble is a good way to pass that time into laughs, and that they'll be no regrets of skipping the show in the first place. Of course though, a 40 minute OVA isn't gonna get a extreme fanbase and be talked about so well, which leads to my second point; the length. It's an OVA, and it's only 40 minutes. Argh... After all the adventures Tamaki and Minori's been through and the funny comedy and script-twist, it's already ended. When the show ended, I said the following words: "I want more." I can only imagine what sort of stories the slice of life will offer, and how both the penguin and Tamaki's relationship will develope. The potential made me realized that this would be a really enjoyable, maybe 13 episode long series (An averge seasonal length) and that it would grow big. But without anymore episodes, I guess Minori Scramble remains a cute and shiny gem that would be discovered by decent anime fans. Even though I'm so ragey that it won't get a season, or that episode 2 will be announced or not, I guess that feeling I explained is intentional for people. That feeling also occurred to me on Cenconroll and Black Rock Shooter OVA too (Although BRS did get a series). I think that they gave a good cliffhanger feeling because ufotable is probably busy or something (Maybe spending all dat money on Fate/Zero lol)
If anything, it's a very cute comedy show that is a fun watch leading you to maybe want more if you like the concept/idea of the story. As I said and will conclude, it's not a "must-watch-or-die", but if you want something to make you a smile and to generally see something with a cute concept, this is a go for you! read more
