Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen

A highschooler goes out from his house in the night and meets a cheerful female vampire that initiates him into the world of the night. Kizumonogatari has a more dramatic atmosphere, however. 

A teenager is tasked with killing three powerful vampires in an urban setting. The sketchy art style and high-level animation in both anime make for some great sakuga cuts, with a lot of gore and blood. Main characters are also vampires to some extent.  

Both are vampire genre with interesting plots. 

Kizumonogatari is pretty similar to Monster due to the fact that they both have the MC saving the antagonist in the beginning and regretting it throughout and having to stop them with their own hands at the end. They also both share a number of "side antagonists." In Kizu, its Episode, Dramaturgie, and Guillotsomething, and in Monster, its Roberto, the Baby/organization that blindly works for Johan, and the police/Lunge. Monster is much slower-paced and has a longer build-up while Kizumongatari is just three movies. Even as this is true, they are structured pretty similarly plot-wise (Araragi goes through everything level by level/antagonist by antagonist before facing off Heart Underblade, Tenma goes through Johan's past piece by piece in a treasure hunt style fashion before meeting Johan at the mid anime climax/finale). Both are really well done and are must-watch titles for any anime watcher. read more

In both, the protagonist is changed into a half human-half monster (vampire/demon) against his will forced by the circumstances and because they wanted to help someone. Both are adaptations that remake some aspects of the source material while still staying faithful to the spirit of the original. They also have highly stylized animation, one with animation style typical for director Yuasa and one with animation style typical for studio Shaft. Both stories employ plot twists. 

Both are very concerned with the postwar youth generation as a whole. Whilst heart under blade represents japan's soul itself, rei is the successive and repetitive generations personified. While araragi represents japanese youth in general, shinji is both salaryman and anime personified. Though they both are the closest parallels around in both anime and japanese live action (trust me I'd know), one is complete while the other has years to wait for it's long over due and delayed conclusion. I'd personally recommend both as starting points for their respective franchises. As they are both the shortest examples in each and are perfectly suited for it. Lastly I'd say watch the kizumonogatari trilogy first as it's largely agreed upon to be the better product despite the fact that it has a much smaller fanbase. Now get to it! read more

Handsome, black-haired protagonist has his blood taken by a beautiful blonde female vampire so she can survive. Follows the relationship between those two. 

Much like Inga-ron is the prequel to Un-Go that is hinted about throughout the series, Kizu is the prequel to the Bakemonogatari series that is likewise constantly referred to. Both give the origin of how the badA superpower comes together with the normie protagonist. Both add so much to their parent stories as well.
