Wow... I must tell you before you read this review that it has been awhile since I watched Tokko.
I really do not think this anime has gotten enough love. It was actually a VERY great anime with a great story. Even though, it made me very upset that they ended it with pretty much... no ending. It was kind of just... over.
This anime... is not for little kids. Very bloody and a lot of swearing, but that was one of the reasons I liked it so much!
STORY: I think that this anime had an amazing story. I mean, sure it's kinda getting old, the whole, "My family died in this major massacre/accident and only I survived...". But, looking past that, the way Ranmaru deals with it and wants to right the wrongs is very inspiring. This is a story of... killing demons pretty much. But the creators of this anime made it more interesting than that. Because there are so many stories like this one, they had to do something to make it stand out from the rest. I think that the characters make this story. I'll get to that later, though.
ART: It's true... the main reason why people have not watched Tokko is not because the story is not amazing, but it's just because the artwork is not "blow me away" incredible. It's just... decent. The drawings have that kind of rugged look to them, which suits it well for a horror/slasher anime.
SOUND: The OP theme is TO DIE FOR! I totally adore it. It even put it on my I-pod. But don't listen too many times, or it gets stuck in your head forever... mwahaha! Throughout the anime, the sound is just... eh. Not too amazing. They do some cool background music I guess, but nothing that really makes you get into the story.
CHARACTER: This is where I belive Tokko excells. At least, with the main characters. Ranmaru Shindo is probably one of the coolest anime characters ever made in my eyes. He's hot, he's a policeman, and he has special powers that he doesn't even know about. Plus, he's got that traumatic past thing going for him. :) I dig that. It took me a few episodes to start liking the main female character, Sakura. First of all... the name Sakura is so over-used. But looking past that, she really turned out to be a great character and played a very important part in the story. Without her, Ronmaru would not have been as amazing. They were a great pair :) A few of the lesser characters (the male ones) where also great, but I'm not gonna spoil it for you. Sadly, the lesser female characters were semi annoying. Especially Ronmaru's younger sister Saya. But, she was important to the story and she made for some good laughs along the way.
ENJOYMENT: VERY enjoyable anime. I mean, who doesn't like hot men and women running around fighting monsters and cutting them up and swearing all the time? Cause I know that I like that sort of thing. There were some intense and emotional moments. Not very many laughs, but a couple popped out along the way. :)
Please tell people about this anime. It really needs more love. It was incredible! read more

If sloppiness had its own anime, it would be TOKKO.
I first saw an episode of this at an anime convention. I managed to only see about fifteen minutes of it, but I thought, 'Hey, I should check this out.' The main character reminded me of Ichigo from Bleach (a young guy with oddly coloured hair fighting other-worldly creatures) and the girl seemed to be pretty kick-ass with her sword, if you can pardon the language.
However, after going and watching the rest of the series, I realised the sum of TOKKO's parts did not add up to something very good.
The story is tired and old: who hasn't seen an anime where demons from the netherworld try to kill everyone in sight? The one "twist" in TOKKO's take on this very unoriginal storyline was to have the ones who fight against the demons be directly involved with the demons as a survivor of their first attack some many years before the series begins. The rest of the episodes follow the protagonist Ranmaru Shindo as he works alongside this elite group of law enforcers, the TOKKO, who are the only ones who can stop the increasing demon attacks in the city. So, all right. Weak premise to begin with, I was sure there would have been something to make up for that.
I was pretty much wrong. I can't even call this anime eye-candy or a visual delight, since I thought the art was very 'flat' and not well-done. The animation was minimal, something you would see in an anime with 100+ anime where the production company just can't bother to spend a lot of time or effort into animating the series properly. Considering the length of the anime, I thought more effort could have been placed in at least making the art crisper, cleaner and not so bland.
Sound...it was unimpressive. There are anime out there with sweeping scores, or at least they have music that can evoke some response from the audience, adding ambiance and setting a mood, however this all seems devoid in TOKKO.
The characters were as two-dimensional as they could get. They were more than just talking cardboard cut-outs, but they were not developed well, and their emotional capabilities are limited to how much they can cry, scream or grunt. 'Melodramatic character' does not equal 'good character' unless the character was MEANT to be a drama queen.
Honestly, I had not the best of times watching this anime. I do like violence and gore, and there's a bit of that in TOKKO. If you're not a fan of blood and limbs flying about the place, I suggest you keep away. If you are bothered by shallow anime with a slim enjoyment factor, then please do stay away as well. I am probably coming off as overly harsh, but an anime with very little to offer in plot, character and artwork cannot incite me to recommend it to anyone for viewing's sake. read more

Swords, monsters and blood!
Both the series have same things, but Blood+ is so much better! If you liked Tokko, you must see Blood+ (and Blood: The Last Vampire, related to it).
both invole hunting demon like creatures and tons of action. A great anime that has lots of blood and good fighting scenes.
they're both great anime which has lots of blood and violence. Also they have demons that they go around killing so that they could save the world.
Blood+ and TOKKO's story lines are very similar( blood, gore, slicing things etc.).

Although Tokko is slightly more of a male aimed show than Elfen Lied it felt like almost the same thing. There is the whole 'boy who met girl as a child and then never saw her again until x many years later' cliche in this series too. Hell, the chick, Sakura if I remember right, even looks like an older Lucy. Tons of blood and violence as well as the sentimental lovy dovy stuff as well. Not quite as emotional as Elfen Lied but enthralling all the same. Check it out.
These two anime have LOTS of points in common. LOTS.
Firstly, both in EL and Tokko there is the idea of revenge, sacrifice, anger, sad past, and happiness.
Both have dark atmospheres and fights against non-human creatures.
Both have horror, violence, splatter and gore in it, with a touch of nudity (even if in EL there's much more ecchiness).
In both anime there are misteries, secrets and investigations.
Also the background of the characters is really similiar: both Kouta and Shindou have lost their parents some years before, and both of them met Lucy and Sakura when they were little (and both Lucy and Sakura have pink hair!).
Even the end is kinda similiar, in fact they're both misterious and not well-explained endings: (SPOILER!!!)
in both anime the female protagonist sacrifices her life for the one she loves, even if there's a difference: in EL it's still not clear if Lucy survived or not, in Tokko we know that Sakura is still alive. (END OF SPOILER)
Another thing is in both EL and Tokko there are many flashbacks about the past of the protagonists.
In both there are more female than male characters.
Both anime are long 13 episodes.
Even the animation is similiar (especially the splatter scenes).
Both good anime and both worth watching, even if Elfen Lied is a lot better for me.
TOKKO I have previously started to watch. In comparison with Elfen Lied they both have pink haired kick ass chicks that seem to be good at blood shed for one reason or another. And both have a race of demons or new species (diclonius) trying to eliminate mankind. Both seem to follow a good story and have nice art and characters.
