Synopsis

Effeminate fifth grader Shuuichi Nitori is considered by most to be one of the prettiest girls in school, but much to her dismay, she is actually biologically male. Fortunately, Shuuichi has a childhood friend who has similar feelings of discomfort related to gender identity: the lanky tomboy Yoshino Takatsuki, who, though biologically female, does not identify as a girl. These two friends share a similar secret and find solace in one another; however, their lives become even more complicated when they must tread the unfamiliar waters of a new school, attempt to make new friends, and struggle to maintain old ones. Faced with nearly insurmountable odds, they must learn to deal with the harsh realities of growing up, being transgender, relationships, and acceptance.

Lauded as a decidedly serious take on gender identity and LGBT struggles, Takako Shimura's Hourou Musuko is about Shuuichi and Yoshino's attempts to discover their true selves as they enter puberty, make friends, fall in love, and face some very real and difficult choices.

Note: I will refer to the protagonist as a she, and the co-protagonist as a he.

I don’t know why I never got around to watch this short title, when I wanted to do it for years. Since I recently rewatched and reviewed Aoi Hana, another adaptation of the same mangaka, I decided to do the same with this one, and I have to say, it’s clearly a better title.

Coincidentally (or not), it has a similarly looking visual style, consistent artwork, seemingly purposely unfinished yet beautiful backgrounds, and this time, much more vivid and expressive motions, expressions and body language, making these characters feel more ...

Mixed Feelings
What drew me towards this anime was the artwork and premise, it's a newer story coming from Japan, something that may stand out and possibly open a pathway for more similar styles of art and story. Taking all context from the story, and looking only at the plot, this series is very dry and repetitive.

Unfortunately it attempts a good meaning, but leaving the characters forgettable or confusing to tell apart from one another. Without the diversity, personality (other than being trans), and substance. Some may find it difficult to relate to many of the characters.

On the positive notes, beautiful artwork. I love the style, color ...

ok ,so let's see. I find the idea behind this anime is actually rly good, and important. but sadly, the themes that are being introduced are barely touched... it all stays very vague and superficial. I think it's a sweet strory about growing up when one is/feels diffrent than others. the show tries to cope with too many such subjects and therefor fails to rly deepen one... maybe more eisodes would have prevented that, and made it end up a rly good show but like this, it left too many questions and backgrounds unexplained, unanswered.

it sure is a diffrent kind of show, and i actually ...
