The Cat Returns is something of a loose spin-off of "Whisper of the Heart" as it features two characters from that film: Muta (the cat from "Whisper") and the Baron (the cat statue from "Whisper"). There is no other connection between the two movies and this is not a sequel. The story is based on Neko no Danshaku (The Cat Baron) by Hiiragi Aoi.

The main character of the story, Haru, is a clueless, ordinary 17-year-old girl. She has no special abilities and neither is she an extraordinary beauty. When faced with reality, she is unable to make decisions for herself, thus often sways to others' opinions to avoid challenge. One day, Haru saves the life of a cat without considering her own safety. The cat turns out to be the Cat Prince from the Kingdom of Cats, however as a result, Haru is trapped in the world of cats. Can Baron and Muta rescue Haru who has wandered into the world of cats?

Haru is your average, ordinary high school girl. Until she saves a black cat from getting hit by a truck, it all seems normal, until the cat stands on tow legs and speaks to her. Too make matters even crazier, that cat she saved is a prince from the cat kingdom, and his father the king wants Haru to marry his son, and become the princess of the cat kingdom. Of course, Haru doesn't want to and enlists the help of a suave, sophisticated Baron cat with his gargantuan cat sidekick Muto, as they must rescue Haru from the clutches of the cat king.

Perhaps the least of the Studio Ghibli films, The Cat Returns is still a fun movie. It tells the story of an awkward high school girl who gets kidnapped by a bunch of cats. It’s as silly as it sounds, but it has a fairly nice and clear-cut message about believing in yourself, as well as quite a few funny moments.

To begin with, the animation is much different and more simple than the usual Studio Ghibli style. It has a rather white-washed look, and there really is nothing special to look at. The characters are rather odd-looking, with a bug-like appearance. The cats often walk read more

Studio Ghibli has a long history of film making and is known for its great producers. They've made a name for themselves as one of the best studios in the past few decades with all the movies that have risen to fame quickly and cultivating fans throughout their entire run. Everyone has probably watched a Miyazaki film or heard his name. His movies are always top quality and tend to outshine the other films Ghibli makes.

Neko no Ongashi or The Cat Returns is one that has received both good and bad opinions over the years. I discovered this movie due to watching a marathon of read more

Studio Ghibli has the reputation of making nothing but classics that will forever be remembered. Even as I've started marathoning through some of the lesser known titles in the Ghibli library, even the obscure ones were surprisingly good. This is the first Ghibli film to disappoint me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It was just a vanilla story.

Story (6/10) The concept was very good. But the way it was handled felt too easy. The fact that the cat happened to be a prince was a funny coincidence. But then the fact that Haru just happened to have a voice tell her where read more

Anime: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
Whether you're being stolen away by cats or swept away into a world where spirits roam, you'll find yourself enjoying either movie regardless of which one you're watching. Both are produced by Studio Ghibli and are not only visually appealing, they also have fantastic plots and characters.

Anime: Nyan Koi!
Where do I even begin on the similarities between these two.
Both plots have the main character getting into trouble with cats and have the threat of being turned into a cat also! Both could easily take place in the same universe. The cats in Nyan Koi could easily be cats you see in The Cat Returns (attitude and personality wise). If you enjoyed one of these animes go check the other out if you haven't already!
