Blue Gender is best described as a MUCH more serious/gritty, FAR less fan service-y equivalent to Muv Luv. Where as Muv Luv's origin lies in visual novels and is full of haremish rom-com pandering NO, Blue Gender is simply an anime original, very grim post-apocalyptic survival series. Just watch Blue Gender unless you like 'bait & switch' harem fluff. Alien bugs have overrun Earth and robots are used to fight them in desperate battles. Expect to see brutal, graphic deaths. The two also share male/female lead duo romance subplots: Blue Gender treats sex casually, whilst Muv Luv focuses on... blushing wuv.

Plot wise (esp sci-fi elements), these two shows are somewhat similar: both shows start with main character wakes up in a vastly different and dangerous environment than the place they used to live. Through the course, they gradually adapts to it and learns the skills to live. Later, some organizations revealed that both main characters have the special ability that they need for mankind to survive the future. In the end, those shady organizations got out of control and destroyed by their own creation, the main characters end up living in the planet they adapt to. Also both shows mainly have two parts, either a  read more

Blue Gender is the largely unknown AND under-appreciated survival gem that came LONG before the fall of Wall Maria. The grim, 'horror' tone so rarely seen in anime as characters are introduced only to be killed off without mercy (initially, in Attack on Titan) is present in both. BG has VERY little pandering, whilst AoT was influenced by shounen tropes. The most obvious similarity is the heroines of the two: Mikasa from AoT and Marlene from BG are both stoical killing machines that are shown to have softer sides via romantic feelings for the respective male leads. The most striking similarity visually is how the  read more

Hypothetically, if I were ever to be cryogenically frozen in the hope of people from the future coming up with a cure for a fictional, incurable disease, I would feel a tad concerned. Why? Because anime has taught me that whenever a character does so, they wake up at some undetermined date with the apocalypse seemingly having occurred whilst sleeping - with the character forgotten - and there being very angry, man-eating creatures prowling around. As well as healthy plant overgrowth. I would opt to go back to sleep until the world unbuggers itself, personally. The above is the premise of both series, by the way:  read more

Not sure why this isn't recommended more, but both are dark and depressing mecha. Both devolve into a weird psychological theme centered around the nature of humanity. Blue Gender doesn't get nearly as surreal as NGE, and BG is more focused on the effects of war/battles. For every similarity, there's a difference, but there are a lot of similarities, and both are excellent.

Both are sci-fi horror anime dealing with humanity fighting insects much like the film "Starship Troopers". In my opinion, Blue Gender is the more atmospheric of the two while Terra Formars has more action.

Both animes begin with a human from the past that has been put into a cryogenic capsule and awakens into a distant post-apocalyptic future. Both main characters have a destiny to help the present world. Origin is more about the conflict between an failed experiment that made the nature go out of control and technology, whereas in Blue Gender the conflict is not internal, but external, the humans fighting against aliens.

Sidonia no Kishi is a poor man's Blue Gender. While Sidonia no Kishi has superiour animation, Blue Gender eclipses Sidonia no Kishi in all other aspects regarding visual narrative.

Girl with no emotions pilots a Mecha-type machine, either way the girls meet the boy, and emotions appear. Also major character development in both boy and girl.

Both titles are set in a post-apocalyptic setting with a similar vibe. They both feature characters that can use mecha and armor battle suits to battle powerful enemies. They are also both action-packed anime with lots of violence and blood. If you enjoy MD Geist and want a better post-apocalyptic anime, check out Blue Gender. If you like Blue Gender and want another post-apocalyptic anime with a similar vibe but with a weaker plot then maybe give MD Geist a try.

Both anime are set in a post-apocalyptic setting with a similar vibe. They both focus on humans fighting for their lives against giant monsters and want to take back the Earth from the invasion. They are also both action-packed anime as well. If you like one, you may like the other.

Humanity's hubris and curiosity is the engineer of it's own downfall. Must then struggle to survive.

Blue Gender and Chrome Shelled Regios are set in an apocalyptic event in which the planet has been dominated and the humans are set as food. Also the main characters in both anime refuse to fight in the beginning but later find a resolve to fight for what they believe is worth protecting. Only difference is that Blue Gender has Mechs and tends to be more serious While Chrome Shelled Regios uses Kei enhanced weapons and has some light comedy to balance out the seriousness but both are still amazingly awesome shows

Both are sci fis. The tone of their story is similar, even though Blue Gender is more mature than Cowboy Bebop in some aspects and somewhat grimier, darker.

I can't quite put my finger on why Blue Gender reminds me of Gantz. It may be the characters, the style, the adult-orientedness, the sci-fi, the constant fighting, etc... In general, both anime "feel" the same. Warning about Gantz though...has nudity and sex in it...I just skipped through the parts though and it was fine.

Machines used to kill biolological bastards, of to disinfect bugs, both rely on technology that sometimes turns the table in either their favor or opposite, with a darkside story that comes only with one resolve.

Totally different genres, but have the same feel, slightly dark. Genetically enhanced heroes saving the day, with a main female character along with the ride.

Both are mecha anime that focus on humanity being threatened by an alien species, the protagonist has a special condition, and a good amount of both shows are set on space stations. They also both aired on Adult Swim at around the same time. There are a few differences - for one thing, Blue Gender has less CGI. Also, Blue Gender finished it's run in Japan, whereas Pilot Candidate did not.

Both have a "virus" that is threatening humanity, similar action/adventure/sci-fi driven plot that is backed by thought-provoking, Darwinian-type evolution theory. Similar art style.

I'd be surprised if Blue Gender wasn't at least somewhat inspired by the Starship Troopers franchise. The similarities are immediately obvious. Both are Science Fiction stories about humanity fighting against giant bugs, both are very violent.

CLaymore/ Blue gender Im surprised this recommendation hasn't been made yet. (EDIT: only 1 rec ;)) Shows with similar art styles, similar environments, similar vibes, similar characters, similar plots, similar pacing. A.k.A... Very similar shows. Both involve a hardened blonde female lead going around killing monsters in order to achieve their own mission but also to protect their young male comrad. The relationships in both shows also develop in similar ways as our hardened female protag learn about love, friendship and becoming vulnerable because of that growth. Both shows are entertaining with plenty of action with the main focus on developing characters. I feel both shows have similar weaknesses also. If  read more

Mecha, apocalyptic plot, strong military concept, fight with giant aliens/bugs. There is recommendation to muv luv alternative total eclips. I dont recommend that. That is pretty shitty, with nothing happening in research facility, just shiping making. While Schwarzesmarken, prior in same world as muv luv is brutal, raw with all military stuff and ptsd syndromes and relationships which belong to it, pretty similar to Blue Gender.

Both series have a military force/government agency that is fighting against monsters. Also both series have romantic relationship between the main characters. Also both (Blue Gender far more) have sci fi elements.

Horror mecha series that hinges around a small group of characters in a post-apocalyptic setting. High stakes right from the start. Impactful action scenes with robots getting into visceral fights with nasty monsters. Solid direction throughout. Even when the plot thins, the action grips you.

Both from the same director, have real robot grunt-suit mecha on wheels, and worlds that are consumed by war.

Similar premise. Humanity is on the back foot fighting against insect-like (building hives and all that) alien invaders with a fish out of water main character. Both feature "realistic" mecha inspired by real life military.

both blue gender and bubblegum crisis are severely underrated hidden treasures in the realm of old school anime...both shows have 80's-ish rock music in them. blue gender in the opening intro and bubble gum crisis throughout the OVA ...both shows are cyber mecha with dark chaotic themes and nudity..futuristic elements

Like Blue Gender, Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 also wields giant robots

Both of them have a normal young man who is led to wild and strange circumstances, acompannied with a strong girl. I think that if you enjoyed the relationship between Rock and Revy you will enjoy Blue Gender as well.

If you've seen one, its highly recommended you watch the other. Both animes are involve a conflict between humanity and giant insects, called "Blue" in Blue Gender. and "Om" in Nausicaa. Both animes are set in a post-Apocalyptic world. In Nausicaa technology regressed, but in Blue Gender, humans are merely endangered. In Blue Gender, the Blue evolved to destroy humanity because humanity polluted the Earth, in Nausicaa, the Insects are what keep humanity alive with their purifying trees but humans are hostile to them out of fear, thus they are engaged in conflict.

another end of the world type anime

In both series, the Earth has been laid to waste by horrific bug-like monster aliens that tend to kill lots of people and be very hard to kill. Only a few people (usually our mains) have any chance at all of beating them. One of the goals of both series is to take back the Earth from the invasion.

Aliens, drama, mecha. If you enjoyed the Godzilla plot of Patlabor 3, then you must check out Blue Gender.

Both anime series are set in space and have excellent character development. The romance, the conflicts and the realistic depictions of what a future space base would look like makes Blue Gender an interesting watch.

Post-apocalyptic animes where humanity is fighting for their survival. Both anime have their own individuality and similarities between plots and characters. If you want action, mecha, and romance; then these two will fulfill your needs.

If you liked the realistic depictions of soldiers without superpowers and post apocalyptic scenario of Blue Gender, then Gundam: 08th MS Team is a must watch. An interesting conflict with many types of realistic weapons and mecha with a distinguishable romance story makes 08th MS Team a good watch.

Both series involve a small group traveling a great distance in order to get to a specific point on the globe inconveniently far from where they started while fighting an alien species that has dominated humanity. This changes halfway through Blue Gender as the focus shifts a bit, but the alien presence on Earth is still unwelcome. Blue Gender is the darker of the two series, but if you enjoyed the traveling a great distance while fighting things that want to kill you aspect, you should consider giving the other one a shot.

People living on the moon because the Earth has become uninhabitable and a relationship between a boy from Earth and a girl from the moon. The moon is ruled by a totalitarian government that restricts information and individual freedom.

Blue Gender and Ergo Proxy are set in futuristic dystopias, and follow the journey of two key characters, a no-nonsense woman and a man trying to grasp his identity. We see these characters grow and change as they form a relationship with one another, and it is this development that pushes the stories forward. Both series contain a political element and address issues such as social class and morality, offering the audience much food for thought. Definitely two titles for the scifi fan.

Both are about humans vs bugs. Starship troopers (aka. Uchu no Senshi) is about the earth being attacked by an unknown bug life form located somewhere out in the vast space galaxy. Blue Gender is about the earth being over run by over sized killer bugs and humanity fighting to maintain whats left of their own existence from being wiped out.

Apocalyptic, bugs/alien, mecha, survival. Very similar anime.

Both are sci fi animes and both have an interesting storyline! (: I watched Strain first and then Blue Gender and I really loved both of them. both also involve characters that die off easily at the beginning of the series.

Similar feeling, the earth have been infected with monsters in Blue Gender and a virus in Zaion which turn the user into a monster. The two main characters in both anime have a similar relationship too as they are mostly treated as tool. I think Zaion have better romance but Blue Gender is overall better because the serie is longer and have more solid content.

Both animes are about earth with very few humans on it.

You can think of it taking place in similar universe since it uses the same sci fi plot device of a tightly controlled satellite colony to keep the human population going from the aftermath of a natural disaster. Also both focus on the culture clash between the blonde (scantily clad) military trained special forces agent and bonding experience with the local guy that has memories / nostalgia of the normal surface world with morals the viewer empathizes with. Expelled from Paradise, 2 hour movie but it is a good showcase of some of the best CGI graphics out currently. Simple story but light hearted and  read more
