Synopsis

Mafia is rife in America where assassinations are a regular occurrence on the streets. Inferno, a mysterious company, is behind most of these dealings through the use of their near-invincible human weapon, "Phantom."

One day, a Japanese tourist accidentally witnesses Phantom's latest murder. Desperate to escape, the tourist hides in a secluded building. However, Phantom, revealed to be a young woman named Ein, and the leader of Inferno "Scythe Master" captures the tourist and brainwashes him.

Given the name "Zwei," this once peaceful tourist is now a puppet of Inferno with no memories. Drawn into a world of lies, deceit, and violence, Zwei must fight to survive, hopefully to one day regain his memories and escape from this world where he is constantly on the brink of death.

“Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom” is a story of an amnesiac forced to become an assassin for a crime syndicate. It’s also better than it sounds on paper.

There are three main heroes in this show:
Ein - The prototype assassin. A young girl brainwashed by a mad scientist archetype to become the perfect weapon. She’s broken in so many ways that You could create a trauma bingo card with her. She shows little to no emotions outside the ones she puts on as a show during missions. Out of all the assassins she’s the most tragic one of all and at first it’s really hard ...

Mixed Feelings
Overall, I have mixed feelings about the series. Reiji and Eren were great characters and I loved everything involving them. Some side characters, like Claudia, Lizzie, and Cal, were rather well done in their own rights. I just don't feel the same about any of the other side characters though, since most of them just weren't all that interesting and so much of the series was focused on their machinations. Inferno in general was a mixed bag for me, and while Scythe had his moments, he just came off as a bit of a mustache-twirling villain who didn't care if he sacrificed his pawns. Maybe ...

I started watching this for three reasons: 1) it's in a genre I usually enjoy, 2) it is highly rated, 3) it seemed to be more adult-oriented than most anime, leading to expectations of more mature and complex themes and somewhat realistic writing.

This is the first series I've so far watched where I disagree with the high rating and can't really understand it. This series did not meet my expectations at all, although it is not completely without merits. Animation is better than average and visually there are nice artistic choices from the director throughout. Music is mostly solid and often atypical in a good ...
