Recommendations

The main characters both have small monsters as partners, who can evolve into bigger, more powerful monsters. In both series, these monsters are used to battle each other and serve as bodyguards for their "owners." Pokemon was always the most popular of the 2 series, but Digimon is definitely not to be underestimated and by many even rated better than Pokemon.

Ahh, we all remember Digimon. Or at least I do. I remember staying up on Saturday mornings trying to catch it, and had a lot of good times. I remember trying to list all the digimon as they appeared in episodic order, and how much I loved the first couple of seasons and the awesome movie. If you're here looking at this series and you have seen it before, then there's one thing on your mind: nostalgia. If you haven't, well, let me break it down for you.

STORY: If you compare it to every anime there is, you'll find the story severely lacking, simply put. If you take the series for what it is, a kid's show, it's just awesome. This practically defines the 'Kids with partners/spiritual guardians/spinning tops/robots/battling pets' genre, and as far as it goes, there's nothing really bad about it. It starts off randomly, a bunch of kids thrown into the Digital World, each with their own Digital Monster (DigiMon) companion, assigned to them by some spiritual right. So their journey starts to save the Digital World for the monsters, and for the kids, get back home. This is spread out in quite a few arcs, and there's even a second season, and in my humble opinion, these two are the best. Without giving much away, I'll say it's standard stuff. Beat the bad guy, get stronger, beat the next bad guy, have lots of fun, and boo adults! It's all great fun, and if you're not looking for something that's not a kid's show, you'll like it. 7/10

ART: Alright, the art does what it's supposed to do. These days it's not too great, but it does its job. Nothing is choppy or out of place, the flashy attacks and animations are right on the money, the character designs are typical silly kid anime, and the cream of the crop, the Digimon, are very well done. Really you have to think the creators of the franchise just made the series so they could draw Digimon, and that's a pretty realistic mindset. Anyway, as I said with story, take it for what it is and go back in time a little; the art is more than adequate. 8/10

SOUND: Kind of weak, to be perfectly honest (I can't praise this show on nostalgia forever). The music was alright, and the opening was nice and catchy. The digi-rap and di-di-di-digimon songs were the only ones I remember. The english voice acting was, for its time, all that was needed, but some of the voices are squeaky and young (what do you expect, they're kids...right?), and the sound effects are pretty standard. Summed up: nothing to hear here folks, move along, there's giant monsters fighting! 6/10

CHARACTER: This was where I had the most trouble giving a rating. In terms of development, growth, likability, and design, the characters are wishy washy. For what it's worth (yes, I know, justification again) there's no problem. Tai is headstrong and heroic as a main character should be. Matt is the second-string hero with a pocketfull of BAMF-ness to him. Joe is the booksmart nervous guy. Izzy is the computersmart not-so-nervous guy, the 'normal' kid with a knack for computers. Sora is the tomboy. Mimi is the fashion-loving girl. TK, Matt's little brother, is the scared little kid. And after a while there's Tai's little sister, Kari. TK and Kari get a little more development in the second season, but for the most part, no one gets any real progression. Their backstories are glimpsed into, but I felt they could've been dealt with a lot more. Granted, you have 7(8) main characters, and their digimon too, but the pacing is a little off. I remember one episode dealing with one of the Four Mega-leveled Digimon, and Tai goes into a thing about how Kari got sick one time. Really? That would've been interesting a while ago. Having said all that, you do get some insight into these kids, and they really start to grow on you. 7/10

ENJOYMENT: Enjoyment? Are you kidding me!? This is Digimon! It's pure enjoyment. The first arc, with Devimon, gives an intro to each of the DigiDestined's partners' powers, and it's all so fun the way they deal with the problems in their world. Seeing all their attacks and powers, and seeing the parallel between the 'real' world and the Digital world were just awesome. You have an Elvis-like Etamon, a giant cruise ship in the sand, a huge toy-land, a village of cute little digi-babies, a church haunted by ghosts, an awesome mountain, an underground convenience store (which needed more screentime!) and so many fun places. 10/10

[B]OVERALL: If you're looking for a gripping, character-driven study of realistic lives of fictional characters, don't watch Digimon. If you want top-of-the-line animation, emotion-envoking soundtracks, and awe-inspiring character development, don't watch Digimon. However, if you want a fun time that just grows in fun, awesome monsters growing, learning, fighting, and interacting with other awesome monsters, as well as a good bang for your buck, do yourself a freaking favor, and watch Digimon. 8/10

Summary (aka tl;dr)
Story: 7/10. 7(8) kids are thrust into the digital world, and in getting back home, they must save it. This takes them across an amazing "fantasy" world, and back and forth to the real world, and despite some lack in pacing, it's a roller coaster of nostalgic fun.
Art: 8/10. Does what it needs to do, memorable landscapes, decent character design, and, as mentioned before, really cool monsters. Enjoy it for what it is.
Sound: 6/10. Just like art, really, but since Sound covers so much more, it falls a little shorter. It's harder to neglect Sound as a whole when it encompasses soundtracks, voice acting, sound effects, and sound editing. Again, appreciate it for what it is, but don't expect a lot. (On a side note, the soundtrack to the MOVIE is really great)
Character: 7/10. Memorable kids, Pokemon with personality, decent (but somewhat short-sighted) development; there's someone for everyone to connect to. The hero, the tomboy, the awesome best friend, the little brother of the awesome best friend, the nerd, the computer nerd, the fashion police, and the little sister of the hero.
Enjoyment: 10/10. Seriously, this show rocks. As far as your generic shonen little kid action/monster/fantasy show goes, this is among the cream of the crop.
Overall: 8/10. If you're a teen or older and you know about this show, you don't need this review. If you're a kid (or anyone!) who has never seen it and wants to get into it, give it a shot. Try to find the English dub, heck if you want listen to the Japanese voices, but be warned: this isn't a grown-up show, but the great thing is, it doesn't try to be.

If you did NOT find this Review help me, grammatical errors or anything like that, let me know. I'll be happy to help and respond. Cheers.

Also, is anyone else seeing this with a Strikethrough? I can't seem to fix it but sometimes it's alright, sometimes it's not. If you see this error, let me know. read more

Story:
This anime basically starts off with seven children (well, teenagers) spending time at a summer camp. Suddenly, mysterious devices come rocketing out from the sky towards them(from who knows where). The seven children take the mysterious devices unknowingly activating a "portal" to another dimension called "the digital world." In this world lies strange creatures called Digimon. These seven kids will travel together in order to realize their importance in thi... read more
