Synopsis

Set in the near future, humanity enters another energy revolution following the discovery of Photon Power. Derived from the ore discovered under the foothills of Mt. Fuji, its intended use was to solve the world's energy problems with its unimaginable power. Seeking this energy is Dr. Hell, a madman craving world domination who with his subordinates Baron Ashura, Count Brocken and Viscount Pygman, commands an army of mechanical beasts excavated from the ruins of ancient Greece to seize the Photon Power Lab for himself. Meeting the attack head on is the hot-blooded teenager Kabuto Kouji, who pilots the Photon Powered robot built by his grandfather, Mazinger Z. But in this battle between Dr. Hell and the Kabuto family, many legends surrounding the Mycenaean Civilization and Bardos Island, as well as the secrets of Mazinger Z remain shrouded in mystery.

A new series based on the mecha show that started it all, Mazinger Z. Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen starts over from the beginning with a new cast, to tell a new story unrelated to the original show.

Shin Mazinger Shougeki Z Hen is not the average super robot show of this generation. First and foremost, it is a tribute to the bygone days of robots. It is a high quality hot-blooded, testosterone-loaded robot slugfest which will leave you begging for more.

True Mazinger combines a number of the Mazinger universe into one brand new reboot, giving some minor characters spotlighted roles, and reducing the less interesting ones, and is loaded to the brim with tributes and references to the old series. Or so I have been told. Truth be told, this was my first entry into the Mazinger universe, and it was well read more

True Mazinger is a very good, thoroughly entertaining super robot show.

Pretty much, Kabuto Kouji pilots the original badass super robot, Mazinger Z. Dr. Hell and his psychotic minions are constantly waging war, they want to stop Mazinger Z and get all the various powers and technology from the good guys.

For the most part, the show is dialogue driven, with all the eccentric characters going into great detail about how they feel and why they want what they do. The plot is more explained than actually shown, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it keeps the intrigue going.

The oldschool super robot action is read more

Build a time machine, tune the dial to 1972, walk the streets of the Japanese suburbs, and you may hear that catchy Mazinger Z opening song blasting from a cathode-ray tube TV set. The famous opening animation introduces a swimming pool separating to allow the first super robot to be controlled by a human being to walk and save Japan. Mazinger Z is one of those influential works you have to know regardless of your interest in the mecha series.

However, one of the main criticisms of the well-loved kid show is that the protagonist is nothing like Go Nagai envisioned. Kabuto Kouji is supposed to read more

Anime: Giant Robo the Animation: Chikyuu ga Seishi Suru Hi
Giant Robo and Shin Mazinger were directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa. Giant Robo is based on the collective works of Mitsuteru Yokoyama and Shin Mazinger uses elements from many of Go Nagai's previous projects. Both series attempt to present a comprehensive tribute to the authors of their respective source materials through an entirely new story.

Anime: Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Both shows have the same director and have awesome narrators, with memorable lines, such as, "GUNDAM FIGHT! READY, GO!" and "SONOTORI! KARE NO NAMAE WA BUREIDO!".

Anime: Gaiking: Legend of Daiku-Maryu
The original Gaiking and Mazinger series were both by Go Nagai and were animated by Toei.

Due to Toei not giving credits to Nagai for the original Gaiking series, Dynamic and Toei have since gone into a long dispute. In fact, they fought over a bunch of stuff and the famous Dai Mazinger project that was blocked by Toei really created tension between both camps.

I'd like to think that Gaiking is Mazinger's cousin, and both Shin Mazinger and the new Gaiking are excellent shows. They also share hot blooded characters.

Anime: Kenzen Robo Daimidaler
Daimidaler has all the makings of a typical Go Nagai anime adaptation. It shares the same hot blooded main character, Endoh opening and an enthusiastic narrator, and of course, giant robots. To further illustrate my point, even the 3 professors in Daimidaler are a direct reference to the 3 professors in Shin Mazinger, namely Sewashi (Sewashiko in Daimidaler, ko to denote that they're female), Mori Mori (Moriko) and Nossori (Soriko). The action is also very fun to watch. Daimidaler gives a great sense of weight like Mazinger Z. And should I note that the character design for Kouichi resembles Mazinger's Kouji with thick sideburns?
/> While Shin Mazinger doesn't have as many perverted scenes as Daimidaler, the show is exactly like another Go Nagai giant robot adaptation, known as Koutetsushin Jeeg with its overly lecherous MC.

If you enjoy Daimidaler for all the reasons I listed above (hot blooded MC, giant robots, great action, music), then you will surely enjoy Shin Mazinger and other Go Nagai anime adaptations. read more

Anime: Robot Girls Z
Well, if you're unaware already of what Robot Girls Z is parodying, I could always tell you to check out the original Mazinger Z series with 92 episodes, but I'm pretty sure that the lot of you are too spoiled to enjoy older anime. Instead, I can recommend you Shin Mazinger, a 2009 26 episodes anime reboot which is more faithful to the Mazinger mangas in more ways than one. Even if Robot Girls Z consist entirely of cute girls now, a simple fact remains, they're both hot blooded and fun as fuck for the entire family to enjoy!

Anime: Change!! Getter Robo: Sekai Saigo no Hi
Getter and Mazinger, two of the ultimates in the Super Robot Genre. If you want ridiculously manly characters, insane action, kickass robots and ridiculous amounts of awesome, both deliver. Oh good lord do they ever deliver.
