The aesthetics of these two anime are quite similar; in both the thematic of flowers plays a very important role, as do the prevalence of strong leading female characters. In the movie, Sailor Moon's most childish aspects have been somewhat toned down, establishing a connection with the more adult content of Utena. Both series and movie share a certain atmosphere of classic animation that is akin despite the differences the approaches followed. Sailor Moon R The Movie can be followed as gripping but straight forward entertainment, while Utena is an exercise in psychological complexity. Still, there is enough in common regarding imagery and overall mood to warrant a recommendation.

I love the backstory with how Darien became friends with Fiore and when he first really met Serena. It was both sweet and sad how Serena saved Fiore and then how Fiore gave Serena back her life. I also liked how the girls always stuck by their princess and that no matter what, Serena never gave up on anyone. Not even Fiore. It is a fantastic movie that I highly recommend. If you haven't sen it, you really are missing something.

Jul 7, 20081 of 1 episodes seen 0 of 2 people found this review helpful Today, I was planning to watch the Sailor Moon S movie since I'm going to read "The Lover of Princess Kaguya" soon and I wanted to compare them. However, the only subbed version I could find was on Veoh TV and watching it there would have interfered with what I was doing today, so I decided to watch the R movie on YouTube instead. I'm going to review this as unbiased as I can, because I personally didn't like this movie very much.
(By the way, the person who uploaded th...e one I was watching didn't upload the end, and I had to read about it on Wikipedia, so bear with me a bit.)
Story: The story was pretty good. It stays true to typical Sailor Moon plotlines. It was kind of sweet how Fiore wanted to protect Mamoru so much, and it was very sweet how the Inner Senshi stood by Sailor Moon so much. I admit, I got kind of bored in the middle and took a break, but that may be because of my problems with sitting and watching a long thing.
Art: After seeing the SuperS movie, I admit I was kind of disappoitned with the art here, which was nothing spectacular. But there is this one scene that shows the meteor from an angle, and that was pretty cool looking.
Sound: The sound was great, I really noticed the background music, and it was really good.
Character: Of course, all the familiar characters are in this, and they're all great. One of my favorite scenes was the part where Usagi was sleeping, and Chibiusa plugged her nose shut and held her hands on Usagi's mouth. But aside from the usual characters, I didn't like the new character, Fiore, too much. I thought that he was too self pitying. I know that he was possessed by that flower monster (can't remember her name, if she had one) at some point, but I felt that his hatred for Usagi was irrational.
Enjoyment/Overall: As I mentioned before, this wasn't really my favorite. I thought it was kind of boring. However, I can see where other people thought it was good, and maybe if I saw the ending I would think differently. It's not that it was a bad movie, it was just that I wasn't interested. It's what I call "Darien's Movie" or should I say Mamoru. Any even though personally I prefer the dub version as my usual reasons, even though the original is just as great.This movie explains alot of Darien's confused past, and that he had a lost friend.Also of course as many moonie fans could tell if it's of Darien then yes the ...theme and title had to do something with roses and flowers.So yes even though it does deal alot with the scouts and Serena(Usagi) as well.This is truly a R season movie as it deals alot with romance between Serena and Darien.Besides that the ending theme song with the impact of the scene will defintly stand anyone of the couch. I did :) So indeed it's a must see :) read more
