As the king of the faux-MMORPG arena (.hack started development in 2000, then released in 2002; SAO was first wrote in 2001/2002), .hack can claim a lot of the responsibility for SAO. In the anime universe, the idea of being trapped in a fantasy virtual reality setting, via playing a MMORPG, is already 10+ years old. Even Yuki Kajiura's wonderful (though underwhelming, in SAO) music became famous as a result of her best-soundtrack-ever work on .hack//SIGN.

Both are fantasy elements and both stories are simulated inside of video game worlds. Both Protagonists undergo great changes during the course of the story, and both series explore human nature and life.

Gaming worlds with fun rules and creative concepts. '.hack//Sign' brings you a game where characters best each other for personal gain or other benefits. 'Accel World' puts effort into both the character development and exciting match modes for extra flavour. Friendship is an integral part of the series where nothing is impossible if you work as a team.

In .hack, the virtual world is an MMORPG,in denno coil, the virtual world is accessed by wearing cyber glasses, both worlds have big mysteries and urban legends concerning their creations that the characters try to figure out, that's just the start, there's more similarities but i don't want to spoil the show,i'll let you discover them. Denno coil has more action and comedy (the comedy is very present in the first half of the show,it almost completely disapears in the second half) while .hack has a slower pace.

There's a similar atmosphere in both of these animes - at the same time tense and playful. Both stories drop you into the middle of things and give you one piece of the puzzle at a time, as well as having a similar trio of main characters. There's a certain darkness in the background in both; a sinister something which we only catch glimpses of at a time, but which moves behind the scenes and may have power for either good or evil.

The same character design, and the same mood, too: disilluded, thoughtful, nostalgic and melancholic.

Miharu (Nabari) and Tsukasa (.Hack) are very similar. Both are dropped into a difficult situation they didn’t ask for, both respond by becoming outwardly apathetic and inwardly determined not to involve anyone else. They’re also both surrounded by friends who want to help them, despite they’re reluctance to be helped.

.hack//SIGN is about people getting stuck in an MMORPG video game where as Amatsuki is about people getting stuck in a virtual reality Japaneses history machine and sent to Japan's past. Both have an interesting story but have very close similarity's. Amatsuki is very slow at the start but begins to pickup as characters and plot are introduced.

Both series have the same calm atmosphere and slow progress. Main protagonists after waking up realized that they had lost most of their memories. They have no other choice than to accept their situations in game-like world.

Themes of memory and identity, being trapped in another world, computer programs, the sense of a larger plot not being fully explained... There are plenty of big differences between them, but both shows have these elements, and they're both very enjoyable in their own regard. A lot of thought seems to have gone into their concepts. Plus, the creators of Angel Beats! seem to have ambitious plans, so it may come to have the same kind of multimedia project kind of feel that .hack's been expanding on for so long.

Both .hack//Sign and Summer Wars are involving with online world (Actually, all .hack series are also involved with online world, too). There's also problem with online worlds in both series that the main characters of both series needed to take care of (some kind of virus involved).

Both anime centre around a young depressed protagonist who hates the world. Both share themes such as family violence and school bullying, except that .hack//Sign only implies these themes, while Elfen Lied shows them; Elfen Lied depicts gore and nudity which might be considered offensive, while .hack//Sign is family-friendly and doesn't even has a slight nudity or fanservice.

Get Backers and .hack//SIGN have a similarity with characters and an initial plot. MacubeX and Tsukasa are both questioning their existence. In Get Backers, however, MacubeX takes his depression to an extreme; while in Tsukasa's case you get a small picture of a bigger problem. Both anime are entertaining in their own right, though Get Backers, not centered around a depressed main character, is humorous; and .hack//SIGN, while centered around a lone speculative child, is more thought-provoking. If you enjoy one you will enjoy how the other looks at the possibility in a different light.

Both anime with virtual reality gaming worlds and more serious/dark plots than their counterparts in their respective franchises. They both have amazing & iconic character designs as is concurrent with the other titles in their franchises. They both also have great soundtracks as well as similar all round appeal.

- Both of them focus on a virtual world that is usually accessed by uploading one's consciousness via some kind of headset interface. - Surprisingly, both of them also address the theme of "uploading" one's consciousness online and the dangers and consequences that may come from it.

+ Both have some mystery, that should be revealed at the end. That mystery has certain name - "Noir" in Noir and "Key of Twilight" in .hack//Sign. + Both have beautiful OST from Kajiura Yuki. + The style of art is similar. + The tempo is almost the same. + Both have two realities in the show: everyday life and mystic world of past (in Noir); everyday life and cybernetic world (.hack//Sign).

Character based shows dealing with mysteries involving the significance of the main character(s). The shows rely heavily upon character interactions and dialogue. The music in each show is great. Madlax has action but not so much with .hack//sign.

Both set in Virtual Reality worlds with main characters dealing with in game errors

i dont really have a show that this is like. but its basically a "horror" anime about paranormal activity, at first it starts slow. every episode has multiple parts and each story gets more and more creepy/paranormal. basically high school ghost hunters

- Offbeat, gloomy atmosphere - Some of the best OST's in anime - teen angst - extremely unsympathetic, cowardly mc who has little control over his own life - not much progress story-wise but much insight in the mind of teens
report Recommended by Weeaboo_Bomber
Chi can be categorized as a ‘living myth’ in the general scheme like Tsukasa is in the World. The story evolves through the unraveling of the mystery of these characters’ existences. Stylish, simple animation and tasteful OST.

Although .hack//Sign it's more of a slow slice of life and coming of age series with some mystery, while Good Night World is a fast adventure that turns into a psychological sci-fi thriller mid way, in half the length of the other, they share: -Broken people trying to connect with others through a videogame, something that they couldn’t do in the real world with their real families, more so in Good Night World. -Similar head sets, though smaller and more advanced in Good Night World. -An advanced AI going crazy and affecting the real world and people, more so in Good Night World. -A dead girl resurrected in a  read more

Based on an MMORPG. The main character in dothack is unable to logout. He meets other players who help him. At the same time you will get to know the characters and about The World of DotHack. Dothack has combination of sword, lances, and magic etc while Blade and Soul has only martial arts. One series uses a combinaiton of PC + Virtual Reality headset while the other is just PC oriented

Both anime are adventures which dictate a journey through their characters as they struggle to find truth and a sense of the world. Both anime also contain the element of mystery as they slowly divulge the answers the characters have been searching for. FMA differs with more action and being shounen; carrying the some of the demographics traits. While .hack//Sign differs with its virtual world (MMORPG) setting whilst carrying sci-fi and fantasy elements. If you are someone intrigued by slow divulgence of truth and answers, as characters make their own journey forward, you'll be sure to like both anime.

-Both are darker prequels of a big franchise. -Both feature more mature characters. -Both MC are cynical and have sad depressing childhood. -Both focus more on building up characters; development, relations, background informations. -Both characters seek a powerful mythical object; Key of the Twilight/Holy Grail. -Both have less action but more well-made dialogues. -Similar music (by Yuki Kajiura).

Casshern is similar to .Hack//Sign main-character-wise. The personality types are fairly similar, and I feel that the sad undertone of each series is similar as well. That aside, actual story lines differ vastly in their own unique way.

both are very powerful RPG-style stories and both are animated by Bee Train,.Hack//sign is a sci fi/Drama exploring the way of life in"The World" which shows up that everything in an RPG is'nt always just a game, but focuese more on the lifestyles of Friendship,Drama and plenty of unsuspecting dark mystery, and a cast of likable characters,Tsubasa is a cool alternate universe Cardcaptor Sakura with a cool action mystery RPG storyline where Syaoran is an archeologist digger and a warrior where Sakura is a princess of the kingdom of clow and features many supporting characters from other clamp animations such as Makona from Magic knight rayearth and  read more

Animes that revolve around discovering the reasons why things are occuring to the main character, and while both feature fights its not the animes main focus.

Both are Bee Train productions and both involve some forms of sword and sorcery.

.hack//Sign is done by the same director and the style is SO similar. Like everything down to the animation and the super philosophical dialogue is the same. It has the same atmosphere. The only difference is that one takes place in an MMORPG and the other in spaaaaaaaace. But yeah. I can guarantee it, if you like .hack//Sign you'll like Avenger.

I think, they both have the same story telling style. Both have a slow, but very good story and character development. Both have some sort of similar characters, who doesn't speak often also when they should talk. Also the character-drawingstyle from Zettai Shonen, although it's not from Sadamoto, reminds me of SIGN, everytime when I see it.

This was one of the first anime i watched. It can be a little confusing, especially if you don't watch it in order. But once i had gotten through the entire series it had easily set itself on the anime throne if not within reaching distance.

Both are cyberpunk titles that have a similar protagonist who holds an intensely introspective and diffident persona. Both of these protagonists struggle with issues of identity in an online environment. Both are found trapped in cyberspace to a large extent. Both deal with a cyber-entity that is omniscient and holds questionable motives. Elements of .Hack//SIGN seem directly inspired by Lain and both incorporate an emotional bond between the protagonist and a special friend with even a brief scene touching on this in .Hack//SIGN which appears to be directly influenced by one of Lain's scenes.

The anime is the same because -Characters same personality, shy, quiet, ect. -Both experience horrible past -Both main character's real body is in a coma -Deals with Magic

-Setting same -Both anime clothing / style are like the ones from online role play games.

Although .hack is virtual, both are high fantasy adventure series that hold many mysteries to the characters worlds.

Both series are somehow very MMORPG (Massive Multiplay Online Role-Play Games) related. .hack's main story is based on a MMORPG and Druaga has a lot features like classes, dungeons, mobs and so on.

The music, art, character design and looks at technology are really similar.

Both series have a very peaceful feeling to them. .Hack//Sign reminds me more of a lullaby, while Mushishi reminds me of calm water. Other similarities: -calming music -white hair protagonist They're very different genres, but if you like one you may like the other.
