Synopsis

At the Personality Plant, robots are being built and slowly outfitted with the artificial memories of real people. Suzu is one such robot, being made to replace the young boy a family has lost. By chance, he meets a Hitori, a young girl suffering from progressive memory loss. The two children become friends and attempt to define themselves in the light of their changing memories. Over the decades anime has produced some of the most compelling works of visual fiction on the planet. Since the turn of the millenium though, it seems as though the medium has gradually matured in terms of content and focus. One of the reasons for this "coming of age" is critical and media attention, especially over the internet, however there is an even bigger impetus in this maturation process - recognition as a creator - and it's this driving force that fuels the award known as the Animax Taisho.

Blacksheath
This is an excellent movie with a great premise. It presents an interesting situation in a way that really makes you think. The characters are flawless and the story, while not incredible, adds enough drama to keep things moving.

The question is deep: "What defines us? Do we have a personality unto ourselves, or do our memories and life experiences dictate who we are?"

Watch this movie if you like a more low key, philosophical film with an interesting sci-fi premise.

Recommendations

Both are taken from scripts written by complete unknowns in the anime world, and have been adapted into anime form by virtue of them being winners of the Animax Taisho award.
Sci-fi stories about robots and AI. Both have a considerable amount of drama, as well.
