STORY 8/10:
The story is a classic one, I believe it is based on a folk tale. Love between a human boy and a spirit girl, sadly to be disrupted from mankind's general intolerance of spirits. But ultimately, one where love triumphs supreme.

One can also interpret the story as a criticism of institutions (such as religion and society) and the sweeping, preconceived judgments they pronounce without any actual knowledge of the situation; but ultimately again, while a powerful and often disruptive force, one that is overcome by true love.

The subplot with the animals searching for Hsu Hsien is very funny and cute too! Especially when Panda ...

白蛇伝 - Hakujaden is based on a great Chinese folk tale called "白蛇傳- Bái Shé Zhuàn". The "Legend of the White Snake" is quite old, but also very popular, with countless versions in folklore, literature and drama. The version chosen for the anime adaptation is beautifully romanticised, with some additional characters. A fairy tale about a snake spirit who falls in love with a human.

Story: Legendary, beautifully romanticised, but deviating from the original (6/10)
The original version of the legend is of literary significance, is considered to be one of the four great Chinese folk tales, and is much older than the existing written texts from ...

For some reason when adapting the Legend of the White Snake into an animated movie, producers thought it was a good idea to have utterly boring protagonists. Perhaps attempting to remain faithful to the original, perhaps out of incompetence. Either way, it's a big problem since a lot of screen time is dedicated to them while offering nothing past two winsome bland and wooden stock characters in pursue of whatever it is they're after. I'm not saying there can't be people like that, just that there is no real reason to do that in a movie whose intention is first and foremost to provide an ...

If you want to watch some of the most insane fight scenes, I would definitely recommend this anime.

It's one of those typical stories, where there's the protagonists who fall in love, the antagonist trying to separate them from each other creating the tragedy, and then everything has been resolved and they all live happily ever after, but adapted into an anime film and with an addition to the cast of characters.

The anime accommodates spectacular artwork that I rarely see and the opening music is an absolute banger.

Unfortunately, this is where the praise from me ends. The story was a mess. The supporting characters, ...

Hakujaden is an interesting case, the very first Japanese animated feature film in color and somewhat of a hallmark in Japanese animation. So much so that the thing that actually got me to watch it was it's being selected as the no.1 anime of all time by the anime magazine Animage.

Dated is probably the best way I can describe the film, it has some quite wonderful, fluid animation, stunning even. Interesting use of colour, blurred objects in the foreground, and baring a few jaring cuts and character expression it looks simply great, often taking much from both traditional and modern art creating a unique aesthetic. ...

Fun Fact: This anime is as old as my mother.

Story:
This is based on a Chinese fairytale that I have never heard of before, so I have no idea how faithful this adaption is. As a romance, I found it well done. It's easy to root for the main characters to get together in the end. I don't know if these animals were in the original tale, but they do a good job as filler material. Slightly annoying however was the narrator, who kept describing what we see. Do we really need this?

To put this in historical context, this was made one year prior to Disneys ...

If you are looking for a very old anime to watch for, let's say, a challenge or simply because you are curious, this is a very fine specimen. I t works too if you are looking for a movie to watch with a kid. It's a fairytale with an oriental setting instead of a European one.

First of all, I'd like to say don't panic. The movie starts with a song in shadow theatre style. It's only the opening of the movie giving the background of the story then comes the lovable old animation style. The ...

I went into this with higher expectations than I should have. TOEI's first feature length animation and also the first Japanese colored animated feature film, The Tale of the White Serpent is a sore disappointment in my eyes. Historically, this is certainly a landmark film in Japanese Animation that went on to inspire the likes of Hayao Miyakazi. If for anothing else, it is worth checking this film out for its historical value.

However, when it comes to critically analyzing the film, I think it has way too many flaws to be considered good. The story is adapted from one of the four "great Chinese folktales" ...

ok so the artwork of the anime was kinda GOOD ngl. But the story was a bit boring i kinda had to skip a lot cuz of some really REALLY boring scenes. The background music was good tho. Also the story progresses real slowly. The protagonist are kinda boring too. I had close to zero fun watching this. But the pets that the mc has are cute and i had fun watching them more than the whole show. Thats why i rated it an overall of 4 just beacause of the pets.

If you like traditional music this anime has a lot of it though i ...
