Both shows involve girls getting transported to a fantasy realm complete with giant suits of armour. The animation in escaflowne is much nicer however (not to jab at MKR, I love this show) and it is shorter at 26 episodes. So if you liked MKR, give escaflowne a try!
The 3 Rayearth series and the Escaflowne anime and movie both have: girls who get transported to a fantasy-like world, magic, mecha, blond princesses, bishounen, war, action, drama, and romance.
Both are still very nice and enjoyable, even after many years.

Both stories revolve around a group of girls with magical powers on they're journey to save the world. I could also say that MKR is CLAMP's version of Sailor Moon :), and not a bad one at all.
Mahou shoujo. Save the day, save the world.

Looking for a serious and epic adventure with the occasional dash of comedy? Slayers has it. Hot-blooded red-headed heroine? Yup...she's there, too.
