As often said before this is by the same director and about friends being seperated over a period of time. It's drama and also a little sci-fi.
They're from the same director, so you can expect the style to be quite similar. 5cm doesn't have the whole sci-fi element involved though... at least not as it stands after the first episode.
They are both work done by Makoto Shinkai. Both have similarly beautiful animation styles. Both movies have similar stories in that both main characters are separated by an obstacle (either distance or time) that interferes with their love for each other. The two main characters in both movies also haven't been with each other since they were young.
They both are rather short and has these 2 or 3 parts where the action goes to another point of view or to another time. The romance and drama is outstanding in oth of them, so if you're in for those genres, don't miss these two out ;)
Both are created and directed by Makoto Shinkai. The special effect shown in both animation are very detailed. Moreover, the love story is often wrapped with dreams and reality. Both story are very touching. Hope you will enjoy watching them.
love story from the same director that you might like.
Both are done by Makoto Shikai....and are both simply amazing
Same Director, Makoto Shinkai
Both movies explore the notion of overcoming the distance between lovers. They are both directed by Makoto Shinkai and expectedly have brilliant artwork and backgrounds. They both incorporate a slice-of-life genre into the film and would be enjoyable to anyone looking for a moving romantic movie.
Though 5CM Per Second doesn't have that Sci-Fi element in it, both deal with similar development and animation throughout the series, of course, both are done by the same guy.
Both movies are similar in many aspects. Both are slice-of-life-ish (though The Place Promised strays from that path a few times), and the main characters are two childhood friends, a boy and a girl who have been separated for a long time. They have a distinct feeling of calmness to them, similar character designs as well as gorgeous art and animation. Both are directed by Makoto Shinkai, which is more than likely the reason for this similarity.
It looks like one story from one studio. This same graphic. Colors. Everything.
A beautifull love strory of three friends. Same director, same wonderful artistic design, not as realistic as "5 cm per second", but excelent anyway .
Both have the same director and a similar art.
But Kimi no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho have more science and technology.
Same drawing style and similar characters. Both are great and worth watching. Even thought "Place promised..." is a bit more apocalyptic they still match each other perfectly. If you liked animation, characters and landscapes of "5 cm/s" then you will definitely like "Place promised in our early days" .

Same Director and it is also about 2 people being seperated by something
They're from the same director, so you can expect the style to be quite similar. Voices of a Distant star is a bit short in comparison, but quite similar otherwise. Both focus heavily on the relationships between main characters, and both have the whole near-future sci-fi thing going on.
Well... both are Shinkai Makoto works.. Both are sad... well.. its just similiar.. :D
Both of these movies are highly artistic and thoughtful. They both share the same astounding animation and make enchanting stories. The Place Promised is longer, and more complex for it. Another incredible movie!
Same Director; distinctly alike in tone.
Both are from Shinkai Makoto
From the same artists, with the same filling and similar music. Personally didn't like both, on the contrary to 5cm/s
It has same piano music, that makes anime realy dramatic and emocional. Story is similar longing of a girl for somthing out of reach.

Both share similar art style. You'll definitely like the unique atmosphere of these movies. They both have romantic storyline set in the background of supernatural events.
The same atmosphere of romanticism and beauty
The friendship between the 3 main characters in this reminded me of the girl who leapt through time, obviously the place promised is much more serious.

they both have very moving stories with good characters..

Both are extremely pretentious as far as the story goes, but somehow their animation and music forces you to sit through it. So maybe if you actually liked one of these, you'll also enjoy the other, considering I feel they have almost the exact same failures!

The first half of TPPiOED is a lot like Ocean Waves. There's a love triangle, where two guys (one with glasses, one not) get involved with a girl. The girls in both differ greatly, Ocean Waves' being very selfish, but you'll watch both and have similar feelings.
Unlike TPPiOED, Ocean Waves doesn't turn into a sci-fi mess half-way through. That's why I rate Ocean Waves a lot higher.
In terms of other Ghibli titles, Ocean Waves is very similar in execution and 'feel' to Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart; two of the more mature Ghibli releases.

Same music, similar art. Great twists, nice romance. Just except this is a movie.

While Laputa is more of a light adventure and "Place Promised" a sci-fi romance, they share a somewhat similar plot: Boy meets girl and become close to each other. Later is revealed that the girl has some connection to a mysterious construction. Then boy tries to reach that place to help the girl.

Both are peacefull and the painting style and landscape are great!

Watching them you can feel the same feeling of freedom and peace...

Very pretty slow stories with a sci-fi element
|
|
|
Both of these deal primarily with the issues of depression and finding your place in the world. They are both heavily psychological, well-scripted, and contain only enough science fiction to add to the characters, rather than just become the premise for the show.

Both shows are very slow-paced, calming and depict the beauty of nature in a stunning way. While Shinkai's work naturally is much more technically advanced and story-driven, they do share the same captivating feeling of utter serenity.
