*A failed attempt to surpass the “unsurpassable”.*

“Men put their souls into their drills when breaking through!”

Some obvious advices/facts before we dive into the review.

1.
This is NOT a standalone movie thus having knowledge from the TV series is highly recommended and also beneficial to your mind.
2.
Do NOT compare the pacing of the TV series with the movie. One is called a TV series and the other is called a movie for a reason, k? Both the TV series and the movie are by the original director and script editor so they know what they are messing with.
3.
Do NOT expect to see a lot of new footages. read more

Gainax have turned their series into movies before with Gunbuster vs. Diebuster and more recently the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, now they've decided to give Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann the same treatment. Unfortunately, the runtime doesn't allow for a sufficient amount of development and many elements have been lost along the way, though there are saving graces in the new material.

The original series is twenty-seven episodes long, or - minus the openings and endings - around about nine hours. Gurren-hen follows the events of the first thirteen episodes and so is just over two hours shorter than its source material. As you would expect, much read more

8 - Very Good all around.

Hard to compact a season of 27 episodes down into a 6 episode run-time, but for what it's worth, it pulled it off well. I gave it an 8 as I feel that is realistically what it was worth, I wouldn't have given it anything lower than a 7.

But when compared to the anime series, it is (while there is a decent amount of new content), just simply falls miles short. Miles short and yet I'd still give it an 8.

I'm trying to give a score that is not relative. If this was relative to the anime series, it would read more

Gainax is one shrewd animation studio.

With the reuse of 95% of the footage including the "infamous due to crap animation" episode 4 Gainax truly maximized their earnings. In addition to this, there are moments in the movie that felt diluted in contrast to the TV series. Maybe it's due to Gainax compressing half of the series to an almost 2 hour mark. Maybe it's poor directorship. I don't know. To be honest. The recap episode (ep. 16) owns the movie format. Then again. That was a recap.

On the bright side. There is the Spiral King intro and the climactic battle between Gurren Lagann and read more

Anime: Rakuen Tsuihou: Expelled from Paradise
Both anime focus on main protagonist that live in a city that is detached from the real world. Also, in both anime, Earth has been turned into a wasteland where people have to struggle for their survival. The anime have similar dynamics between characters. They also have a similar mood, some fanservice and mecha fights. The main difference between them is that, at times, Gurren Lagann is a bit more goofy, and has a different art and animation style.

Anime: Mazinkaiser SKL
Both anime are stylistically similar and have similar animation. They both have over the top action and hot-blooded main characters, and pay homage to 70's mecha anime (with Mazinkaiser SKL being a spin-off of Mazinger Z, and Gurren Lagann having many references to old-school anime). Overall, they both create a similar atmosphere and give a similar vibe.

Anime: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (TV)
While the plots of these two anime are different, they both have the same atmosphere and give off the same feel to the viewer. Both feature flashy colors, over the top action, GAR characters and manly tears.

Anime: Doamaiger D
While their length is different, both are super robot anime that take most of their ideas from classic super robot anime and present them in a funny and silly way. Both are self-conscious anime that are not meant to be taken seriously and give off a very similar vibe.
reportRecommended by BohemianRhapsody
Anime: One Punch Man
Both anime use common tropes that are present in other works of the same genre as their foundation, in order to expose and make fun of them (OPM uses tropes from the superhero genre, while TTGL uses tropes from the super robot genre). Both shows have a similar type of humor and over the top action scenes. They are self-conscious shows that try to be entertaining and are not meant to be taken seriously. They also create a similar atmosphere and vibe.

Anime: Redline
Both are fast-paced anime, filled with over the top action and adrenaline-fueled moments. Both have similar animation styles and vibrant colors. Some of the characters are also similar, especially JP and Kamina, who have similar manners and a noticeable bravado. Also, both anime have great soundtracks.
Overall, both anime have similar vibe, animation, characters and themes.
