Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho

Two action dramas that have bits of humor spread through them with unique characters in them.  

Both have similar characters, both have very similar story arcs and plot twists. It's like prototype of HxH. Yu Yu Hakusho looks much more blunt and simple than HxH in many ways, though because of it's legacy you have to give much credit to it. 

Both shows are all about great fights, lots of heart and a grand sense of adventure with wits to match. Each series is also perfect for binging, the hundred or so odd episodes will fly by. 

An epic adventure with four great characters and unique powers, that leads to amazing characters development and show how they are getting stronger. Also in the and the lead characters are meeting there father, that it was one of their main goals. The villains in the story are great and got alot of similarities.  

These are both based on manga by the same creator. They share similar art styles, both have amazing stories, characters, character designs, humour, animation & world building. They are both also considered classics.  

Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter were both written by Yoshihiro Togashi. The shows have a similar style in the way that the arcs move and the story goes. Many of the characters in Hunter x Hunter are also somewhat parallels to the characters in Yu Yu Hakusho. For example, Killura is very similar to Hiei and Kirapika is a lot like Kurama. They are both great series and any anime fan should check out Yu Yu Hakusho. 

These series are similar on: - Same Original Creator: both animes have the same essence of him. It seems silly, but isn't easy. - Characters: there is, in fact, a group of four main characters in both animes which also they have super powers. - Story: the characters for some reason begin an adventure which it holds challenges and dangers they must confront. 

Both series are written by the same author. They both have intriguing villains, well-written and interesting characters, and great world building and action. Yuyu Hakusho noteably has more female characters in main roles than HxH, and also a lot more classic shonen brawls and tournaments. Meanwhile Hunter x Hunter is set in an entirely different world, eventually has a darker storyline, and subverts your expectations more. If you enjoyed one, you will most likely enjoy the other!  

It also talks about a special individual who grows during the show and has powers other dont it was written by the same mangaka so you should really watch it. it was brilliantly made  

Their manga both come from the same author and both feature a great cast of characters. The battles get your heart pounding. The music is great and the stories are the kind of anime comfort food that you can just sit and marathon for days. Both are series that set the benchmarks high for all anime to aspire to. 

This is another great fighting anime from the same creator. It has a fun storyline, great characters, little to no filler, and great voice acting (even in the English dub). 

Both works by Togashi-sensei, with obvious similarities and analogies, especially between the characters. 

I'm sure this is a common recommendation, due to the fact that both anime are based on material from the same mangaka, but I really want to emphasize how much fans of Yu Yu Hakusho should check Hunter X Hunter out. If you, like me, grew up with YYH (or just really enjoy the series) but are unfamiliar with HxH, there are many reasons why it might be the anime for you. First of all, as I said, both series were created by the same original author, Yoshiro Togashi. And it isn't hard to tell, there are similar characters (both in design and the way they are written), and often the tone and storytelling feel similar too. You could even check out the 1999 HxH adaptation, which feels even more similar to YYH due to being animated closer to that time... though I recommend watching the 2011 version more, for reasons I'll get into in a bit. This isn't just "another anime like YYH by the same creator", though. Being the second go around with the shounen genre after finishing the beloved YYH, Togashi continued to grow and improve as a writer and I have to say that HxH is superior to YYH... and it's not even as close as you might think. There seems to be a reason for this: when nearing the later parts of YYH, apparently Togashi had ideas for where he wanted to take the story that were shut down by those publishing his series- they wanted to stick to more a more formulaic and "safe" structure due to the popularity of the series. Togashi felt like his vision was being compromised, which very sadly seemed to lead to him giving up on YYH. However, that is why he created another series, one where he could start fresh and go in the directions he wanted to go. And yes, on paper some of the decisions he would ultimately come to make with HxH may have seemed pretty risky on paper. But Togashi is, and I say this without hyperbole, a genius and an absolute master storyteller, and some of the things he does within the shounen genre are unreal. Though it may start a little slow for the first few episodes, HxH quickly picks up steam and honestly just continues to get better and better throughout its run. Seriously, some of the greatest moments of the series come close to the end. Like YYH, the characters are fascinating and compelling, but in HxH there is even more depth and development given to them. There are similar concepts, abilities, and fights as well, but again it seems like HxH only improves on these elements... and it also helps that HxH is far more surprising and unpredictable. Oh, and it can get pretty damn emotional as well. There are plenty of reviews out there for HxH that go on and on about the things this show does right. It's certainly worth looking into, and I can almost guarantee that if you love YYH than you will love HxH... maybe more so. I think both versions (the 1999 and the 2011) are worth checking out, though as I said earlier I would prioritize the 2011 version. Though there are a few things that set the older one apart and make it worth watching (it even does a thing or two better than the newer one), I think overall the 2011 has more strengths; the biggest one being that the '99 version ends quite a ways earlier than the '11 anime does, and while technically neither of them have the actual END (the manga is still ongoing), the 2011 anime comes to a natural stopping point that makes the viewing experience feel complete. I actually really like the ending for the '11 anime, it doesn't tie up every tiny detail into a neat bow but it does give a great sense of closure while letting the world it creates still feel alive and lived in. That's all, just wanted to put this out there for all the old YYH fans that have still somehow missed out on HxH, and hopefully guide at least a couple people to one of the best anime series out there. read more 

These two shows have the same creator, so if you liked one, you will most likely like the other. Also, these shows have very similar characters, the main four in both having almost parallel personalities. Both have well developed stories and excellent action scenes.  

Both series belong to Yoshihiro Togashi and presents the same kind of humor. Besides the physical similarities among some characters (including a Kuabara’s doppelganger), good observers will have a lot of fun by looking for Yu Yu Hakusho’s Easter Eggs on Hunter x Hunter. 

Both shows have a cast full of amazing and memorable heroes. Both first arcs feel kind of similar, but splits off after that. Both main characters start with little experience, and grow from learning from friends and future events. Packed with great fights and character development.  

Both have tests the characters have to overcome in Yu Yu Hakusho's case it's the Dark Tournament and in Hunter x Hunter's case it's the Hunter Exam. Both are action shounen. Both are written by Yoshihiro Togashi. Both have amazing fights.

Yu Yu Hakusho is like a template for Hunter x Hunter to build upon (at least character wise) Gon = Yusuke Kurapika = Kurama Leorio = Kuwabara Killua = Hiei I always like to say that Hunter x Hunter is like Yu Yu Hakusho 2.0 as it takes many elements from that series but builds upon them in multiple ways. Both are fun to watch and it's nice to see Togashi's original series.

Characters in Yu Yu have similar skeletons with designs and how they act to HXH as its the same author. Awesome fights and great relationships with characters. 

well first of all both where created by the same author and second both have 4 main characters similiar to each other Yusuke and Gon both are quite stubborn and like fighting also they want to protect those dear to them Hiei and Killua both have a tragic childhood and their personality is quite similiar at the beggining they didn't trust anyone but then later they both started to open up to their friends and become kinder also they both can easily kill their enemies since both are assassins then kurama and kurapika both have a girlish appeareance they are often mistaken as girls both are the most clever of the 4 mains and both are the most calculating and then we have kuwabara and leorio both are the the weakest of their groups but still very useful on their own they care very much for their friends and would do anything for them they also serve as the comic relief sometimes both anime have great villians and amazing fighting scenes and some funny moments  read more 

Both of these anime masterpieces are adapted from manga by the same creator. They both center around four main characters that have unique powers, personalities, and backstories. They go on an epic adventure and get stronger along the way. They fight using both strength and wit. They're both perfect shounen that you won't want to stop watching once you get into them. 

Similar characters, fell. Yu Yu Hakusho is more straight forward as an action show but dose so much correct just like Hunter x Hunter. 

Same mangaka, very similar characters, in some ways even better than HxH, both are long-running series.

Both manga are by the same author. They are both battle shounen with a fun cast of characters and great friendships. While Hxh has some darker themes, yu Yu hakusho is more on the lighter side. 

Both are made by the same authors. Yu Yu Hakusho is really good but it still has inconsistencies because Togashi was just in his first steps (I think). Hunter x Hunter was when Togashi stepped up his game. If you like Yu Yu Hakusho, then you might like Hunter x Hunter more.

Well... They both have MCs that wear green and learn develop their powers along with their character. The premise is very similar: A group of four boys fight evil with their Superpowers. You could even say the characters are the same; Gon=Yuusuke, Killua=Hiei, Kurapika=Kurama, and Leorio=Kuwabara. Not to mention they were created by the same mangaka, Yoshihiro Togashi. They are mostly the same except the power system and YYH being based off the real world, while HxH being based on a fictional one.

Both shows have four main characters who bond over their various interactions, also the series is from the same GOAT manga artist Togashi sensei 

The plot lines of HxH and YYH are very similar. The first arc in HxH has the hunter exam where the main characters learn to use their power and get stronger slowly. In the first arc of YYH we get to know the characters and they go through tests and missions together. In both cases the second arc is a tournament arc. In YYH is the Dark Tournament and in HxH is the Heavens arena. The last arc of both is an election arc. In HxH, elections are held in order to elect the new Hunter Chairman. In YYH they choose a new king for the demon world. Both were written by the same person. The main characters in both are very similar. I personally prefer YYH because I think the plot and the characters there are better and have with more depth but I also recommend HxH.  read more

This is another shounen anime by the same creator of Hunter x Hunter , very similar characters  

This classic anime explores themes similar to Hunter x Hunter and the characters can be seen as precursors to the characters in Hunter x Hunter. If you love Hunter x Hunter, it's very difficult to imagine that you wouldn't like Yu Yu Hakusho. 

I mean they were wrote by the same author same character ideas Only that hunter x hunter stands out As something Thats just incredible its just a show that you wish you forgot all about only to watch it again Tbh the 5th arc pacing was kinda slow but other than that still amazing show check it out if you have time its so frikkin good And i dont like normie anime that much but i still loved this 

Both are outstanding shonen with lots of similarities to one another, as you'd expect from Mr. Togashi himself, the creator of both series. First off, many ideas presented in Yu Yu Hakusho such as themes, settings, narrative, etc. were later incorporated and polished in Hunter x Hunter, serving as groundworks for most of the series. Further, the characters of both series, main characters and villains alike, are indeed similar to each other in terms of their personalities, goals, motivations, and values. This, in my opinion, has the most similarities the two series share. Similarities aside, Yu Yu Hakusho tends to be rather straightforward and simple, dressed in a typical shonen fashion, while Hunter x Hunter tends to be more complex and detailed. All in all, I find both of the series captivating in their own ways while sharing lots of similarities altogether. If you love Yu Yu Hakusho, then you'd definitely check out Hunter x Hunter.  read more

Yuu Yuu Hakusho was the series created by Yoshihiro Togashi before his best-known masterpiece, Hunter x Hunter. Both shows contain 4 male main characters who each resemble one of the other. The stories, animation, creativity & quality characters are great in both. I gave both series 10 ratings on this site.

this show and hunter hunter are made by the same guy they are my top two favorite anime of all time. i recommend you watch this in English the voices are superb. the show revolves around yusuke who is a middle school delinquent who thru a series of events tasked with becoming the spirit detective someone who works with the spirit world to make sure nothing otherworldly invades the land of the living

Both hunter hunter and yuu yuu Hakusho is created by the same creator. Both have a lot of mind games in between the fights.  

Although the personalities of the main four characters are wildly different, you can still feel Togashi's writing in each character through both shows. They both include a charmingly goofy quadruple team, with unbelievable power on their hands! They also both have the same adorable art style in each show. 

It is made by the same author. Similar style. Overall they have that same feeling and vibe to them. Yuu Yuu Hakusho is much more mature but if you have not watched it yet it is one of the best anime out there.

Both are Shounen created by Togashi yoshihiro. consented to: trainings, tournaments, assessment of power and conceptions. It's common when characters struggle to surpass their strength and have to face a bigger challenge than their previous rank and both carry great antagonists with very understandable and palpable ambitions. Both animes have a soundtrack that is very expressive but unfortunately very repeated. Not to mention the overwhelming similarity of the central quartet. With proposals for very interesting and ambiguous worlds of beings. And battles with a lot of emotion. Thanks for reading.

They both start light and fun, eventually become dark and tragic. They are both smartly written and are unpredictable at times. Both seem to use the same basic formulae of a typical shounen but are very unique in their own way which is why they stand out from most anime. 

Both are made by the same mangaka (Yoshihiro Togashi). It contains similiar characters, ensemble cast, similar power system, similar themes, etc. But the most important is it gives almost same vibe as HxH. 

This is the peak of Shonen it doesn't get better than this boys. 

Yuu Yuu Hakusho was made by the same person who made hunter x hunter also has the same style and is just as good as hxh. 

Both were created by the same mangaka (Yoshihiro Togashi). Whilst Yuu Yuu Hakusho was created first and the mangaka definitely evolved his work with Hunter x Hunter, both anime are very enjoyable and have a similar vibe going on. 

At first when i started watching Yuu Yuu Hakusho i felt that its really similar to hxh. travel, fight, good plot, and don't think i need to say more. watch it for yourself and find out for yourself, I really recommend it to everyone.  

While both of Togashi's works, Yu Yu Hakusho was the main blueprint for Hunter x Hunter. While many would say Hunter x Hunter is better, Yu Yu Hakusho does a lot of things Hunter x Hunter did, and has a great set of characters that you can tell were used as inspirations for Hunter x Hunter characters. Also, it has a much more fleshed out battle arc - one of the best in all of anime. 

If you like HOnorabl Bad Ass Heroes, good morals, and ghosts and demons. This is the stuff. 

Bleach has so much in common with YYH that it almosts seem a rewrite. Both features a regular human whose lives change after a contact with shinigamis (death gods) and go thru spirit related missions in the human world. The protagonists have a great gift for spiritual power and almost infinite potential (altough this is common in shonen), travel to other realms... and similarities go even beyond the protagonists (Ririn/Claude/Nova — Kaito/Kido/Yanagizawa someone?). 

If you stick a red-hair wig on Yusuke Urameshi (the main character) you'll have Ichigo from the 90's. Both have tough, bad boy exterior that they portray at school. Also like Ichigo, Yusuke get paranormal abilities and somehow gets involved of a alternate world to help save this world from the probable evil with the help of their friends sharing unique paranormal abilities that fit their talents. And as a sidenote, there is shinigamis in both series. 

Similar stories with much action and adventure about shinigamis and the spiritual world. 

They both involve ghosts and are heavily fight oriented, but the themes are somewhat different. There is your average damsel in distress and female fighters, and there is more than enough action to go around for both series. 

What is the after like like? Both of these series explore what the afterlife is like, yet have different takes despite both drawing from the Japanese culture around them regarding spirits. Plus, there are a lot of action sequences in both series. 

The plots themselves are similar (Yusuke is a spirit detective and deals with intersections btwn the demon world and the real one; Ichigo is a shinigami and deals with hollow incursions into the real world), the development of the main characters is almost identical (normal delinquent to super powered fighter of justice), the main character goes on to gather a core group of friend who fight alongside him, he has a very powerful mentor who stays shrouded in mystery for large parts of the series... I could go on, but it seems excessive. These shows are terribly similar, yet are both really great shows to watch. If you Like Bleach, you will like Yuu Yuu Hakusho, as they are both truly excellent anime. read more 

Both series involve a great deal of after-life stuff and in addition to both beeing great shounen, imo you can easily tell Bleach has been influensed by this anime. 

Both shows have delinquent teens for protagonists. Delinquent teens are charged with protecting the world from supernatural beasts. Delinquent teens both have female sidekick from supernatural world and along with lots of brawling school buddies. Delinquent teens both have cool, supernatural toys with which to fight the supernatural beasts. 

Ichigo and his gang of friends fight other people with powers. both anime started out with the main character not having any powers and then their journey begins  

In a way when you watch both of these anime, you can't help but wonder if they were wrote by the same person..they both start out with a boy that sucks at first and through a series of events gains power. As the series progresses they both get stronger for there own reasons and through determination. Though both came out years apart you can't help but feel the connection between the too. There are also some differences between the two like the art work and music but watching these action packed anime with long fights and bad ass attitudes will surely keep you entertained. 

Bleach and Yuu Yuu Hakusho both involve a young male teenage lead that is an outcast and not understood. These characters gain spiritual powers due to a strange event, and gain new friends who better understand them. 

Both of them talk about the other world, have monsters, jokes, etc.. 

After watching both of them, you'll see that Bleach stole a fair chunk of the plot and character traits from Yu Yu Hakusho. Both are great fighting/supernatural shows though. 

Shinigamis, Delinquents, traveling into another world, lots of fighting. Bleach have many reference to Yu Yu Hakusho, like Baunto filler arc or Lost Agent arc (for example at the beginning of this arc Yuzu have Keiko's first hairstyle :O) + Same Director, same studio 

Bleach is the obvious recommendation, not just because it is similar but because Bleach is just a little bit better, at least when we are comparing the highs of Bleach compared to the highs of Yu Yu Hakusho. When you reach the famous Soul Society arc you'll understand my point here in that awesome characters in a mainstream shonen series is definitely more valuable than anything else. And, this might be because long running shonen anime comes with some side effects that you are no longer interested how powerful a super saiyan gets because the idea of destroying every single cell in a person's body can only take you so far in that eventually bores you to death. In short, you've got to like the character that is always kicking ass in battle and Bleach not only offers a really cool cast of characters, but is also paying attention to a style that is more diverse and unique. read more 

lots of similarites can be drawn out between the two series - Both protagonists are high school students.... Both can see spirits.... Both are accompanied by a female character who comes from another world, from the very begining of adventures... one gets the power of a shinigami i.e. To defeat hollows or the undead, the YYH protagonist gets to be a spiritual detective and hunt down demons.... And further more... Other crazy cranky powered characters who can defeat demons show up, same as in case of bleach.... okay no more going further deep into it or i'll be spitting out spoilers.... lastly i'd mention this series as highly reccomended if you loved Bleach :D read more 

Both anime deal with characters who initially recieve their power from a Shinigami (Grim Reaper), and who work for the rulers of the afterlife to fight evil spirits. Both are long-running shonen fighting anime with an emphasis on one-on-one fights, though Bleach lacks YYH's frequent tournament arcs. Also, what happens to Ichigo during the battle with Ulquiorra closely mirrors what happens to Yusuke during his final battle with Sensui, down to the long haired transformation sequence. I see callbacks, intentional or not, to YYH in Bleach all the time. If you like Bleach for the fighting and not just all the swords, give Yu-Yu Hakusho a shot. It's superpowered martial arts instead of swords, but the action is every bit as intense. read more 

Spirits Demons/Hallows yeah its similar if you like bleach you'll probably like Yu Yu Hakusho 

Both anime not only have the same director, but also both start out revolving around characters that use spirit powers to fight beings that normal people can't see. 

Both these shows have a lot of action. Both are about helping the souls of the dead.  

Like Bleach this anime focuses on a violent and serious main character who fights against evil spirits and demons, also like Bleach this manga puts focus on spiritual powers and has multiple plotlines and characters that'll just throw you back and make you see a lot of similarities. Both main characters also develop an evil side that they have to learn to control. 

Both Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho involve a (seemingly) normal teenage kid getting tangled up in the business of the Spirit World (Yu Yu Hakusho) and the Soul Society (Bleach). Additionally, both series contain a female mentor type (YYH has Botan while Bleach has Rukia) that teaches their respective students in the main protagonists their new powers.  

Both anime are based on Weekly Shounen Jump manga. They focus on a main character who can see and interact spirits, and who usually has to fight against monsters of all sorts. Both have the main character develop from a delinquent to a hero of justice, as he gathers more friends to help him in his cause. Both anime are action-packed, have similar comedy and an overall similar mood. 

Both series start with the main character being seperated from his bodie and becoming souls. There are 3 different worlds in both series in Yu Yu Hakusho's case it's Human, Spirit and Demon worlds and in Bleach's case it's Human Realm, Hueco Mundo and Soul Society. Both main characters are connected to all three worlds in Yusuke's case he's a human (Human World), he is a Spirit Detective(Spirit World) and His father is a demon(Demon World). In Ichigo's case he's a human(Human World), his father is a shimigami and he's a substitute soul reaper(Soul Society) and He's got a inner hollow(Hueco Mundo). 

The similarities between these two anime series is eerily uncanny both the main protagonists are teenagers who get involved in the supernatural and spiritual worlds and fight to protect the living world  

-Both have supernatural beings that normal humans can't see -Both have a 'demon' realm and a 'human' realm -Both start out small, but by the end the characters are at ridiculous levels of destructive power 

Both have spirit detective, supernatural stuff in with demons and monsters and both have some pretty comedic moments 

I agree with the majority of the crowd. Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho have some similarities. I personally think bleach has better fight scenes later on in the series, but that's just me. They both deal with fighting, supernatural, there are also other world or spirit world similarities.  

Both feature Shingami/Spirit Detectives in Yusuke and Ichigo. Both have female Shingami guidance in Rukkia and Botan. Rivals that become integral teammates like Uryu and Hiei/Kurama. The characters power up with Sprit energy in one and Spiritual Pressure is the gauge for strength in the other. Yuu Yuu is older and has a bit more of a comedic edge to it and less filler but the overall themes at the beginning are very similar. As the series goes on you have some of the half demon/ half hollow dichotomy as well so the parallels continue.  

Initially, both are about the clash between a delinquent from the real world and an agent from the after-life, with a main character that suddenly ends up gaining powers and having to fight against monsters. Later on, more realms are revealed, and the arcs are often about the conflicts between those worlds and the real one. 

Shounens with badass protagonists who are always ready to scrap. Diverse cast of characters, both feature comedic moments and delve into human world vs. spirit world vs. demon world concepts. Banger OSTs also, as well as iconic major villains with deep planning and complex motives. 

Created by the same people and have such an badass story 

It's like what Yoshihiro Togashi would do if they let him without any pressures

While Dragon Ball Z is a latter series to Dragon Ball, both Dragon Ball and Yuu-Yuu-Hakusho are popular action series which would go on to influence later mangaka in the direction they would choose for their own series. 

Yu Yu Hakusho is like a twisted version of Dragon Ball Z. They have plenty of things in common, from fighting to save the planet to a splash of romance to lighten things up. 

Both were pretty much kings of anime in the 90s and pretty much both have awesome villains and heroes

Both Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragon Ball Z are good and well respected TV series. They share similar aspects such as those of the dealings with the spirit world, and fighting strange yet powerful opponents.  

Both Series have extremely powerful characters that fight in tournaments. 

DBZ fans will surely love Yu Yu Hakusho. Although YYH is less fictional than DBZ, it still has that deadly competition and intense aura. The caracters in YYH are slightly darker, wich gives you a certain curiosity. I really recommand YYH, it as one of my favorites Anime's as well as DBZ. They both are great and jaw dropping. 

Fighting tournaments. Spirit world and King Yama. Energy techniques. Yusuke even kinda goes super saiyan at one point. Also, Hiei and Vegeta are twins. They're both arrogant and awesome short fellows that aren't from earth and have spiky black hair. Difference is: YYH is a bit darker and the battles go by quicker than in DBZ. I liked YYH more. 

A lot of great fights and power ups, although with more of a story! Has a slow start though.

These are the best of the best when it comes to shounen. Best fights, best characters. Yu Yu Hakusho just may be the winner when it comes to character development and plot though. Check it out, it's very similar to DBZ but very special

Both Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho are awesome shounen anime. They are also classics, and the latter is said to be the spiritual successor to Dragon Ball Z. One way that you could compare the two anime are in its art/animation quality and its themes. If you watch either anime, then you might as well start watching the other anime if you haven't already. 

If you grew up off of Toonami, this another show that would come on late at night along side Dragon Ball Z! It is another classic that got us all into anime!

Almost exactly the same. Same style tourney for first major arc... Same style characters (1 main, 1 strong, 1 dumb/gutsy, 1 tactical.) Many more, basically everything except the fact that in flame of recca the guy didn't get hit by a car in the first episode... and they don't use spirit energy. Must watch. 

If you liked yu yu hakusho, you would definitely love flame of recca. Both of the main characters in the respective anime are very similar. Both involve tournaments. And both have amazing fight scenes. If you liked yu yu hakusho, you would definitely like flame of recca 

After watching both series, they are both very similar, even some of the characters have same fighting style. Both endings of the anime was the same. The battles and the enemies are the highlight of the series 

Yuu Yuu Hakusho, now a Shounen Jump's classical, was a very important anime series for establishing Studio Pierrot as an animation studio for long running TV adaptations in the early 90's. With a charismatic cast of rebel and superpowered teenagers fighting their lives on deadly tournament against martial artists and evildoers alike, Yuu Yuu Hakusho was a super hit and milestone into the 'tournament arc' super trope. In the late 90's, Studio Pierrot tried to repeat the same success adaptating Flame of Recca, a manga from the rival Shounen Sunday that, apart its own peculiarities, had the same 'cast of rebel and superpowered teeenagers' and the 'tournament arc' thing all around. Though Flame of Recca were never able to even amass some of the popularity of Yuu Yuu Hakusho, the similarities of both anime vibe and the nice work done by the same studio on its days of glory make both anime worth awhile watching. read more

These two series are similar in so many ways. The characters align very similarly, with a main character with special powers fighting to protect a sweet girl he loves, his dumb and burly school rival-turned fighting comrade (Kuwabara/Domon), enemies turned partners a la Hiei and Kurama, and a main villain like Toguro (except better in FoR). They even have similar tropes and plot lines such as a "Dark Tournament," after which the plots go in separate ways. The Flame of Recca anime stops well short of the manga, so I suggest starting or switching over the manga at some point. I actually watched/read Flame of Recca before Yu Yu Hakusho and found the resemblance uncanny, but both were very satisfying in their own ways!  read more

The protagonist starts out as a delinquent-type kid who has a reputation of being the strongest brawler around, and after some short introduction arcs, they find themselves being forced into fighting in an underground tournament. The main difference is that Rekka is about ninja and YYH is about demons and other apparitions.

here is how you compare yu yu hakusho with hunter x hunter.. in terms of appearances.. leorio-kwabara-both are the tallest main characters; gon-yusuke-both are the main protagonists, kurapika-kurama-both use long weapons(chains and rose whip) and killua-hiei(both are fast, and their eyes are seemingly resembling, although killua smiles unlike hiei) 

Both animes follow a group of guys through battle tournaments of sorts and have plenty of fighting scenes to satisfy the inner violent you = ) They both also have different arc sequences where goals of the groups change ad eventually the groups split and go separate ways but then meet up again. For girls: bishounen in both series For guys: blood and awesomness 

They are both stories that are drawn by the same artist. Also, it seems similar in another way because when the main character is facing a challenge they somehow manage to pull through and win or survive. 

The manga these shows are based off of are written by the same person and you can tell. Both have very similar stories and storylines with mystical powers and tournaments. Both of these are my favorite animes. The only downside is that Hunter x Hunter just kind of end with many questions left to wonder about. Bottom line if you like shounen watch this anime.

Series by the same author, it follow a gang of 4 people and is a well written shounen nekketsu. 

Both YYH and HXH were created by the same man, Yoshihiro Togashi. In common the two anime follows a group of four male protagonists on an action-filled adventure. The main protagonists are stubborn, hard-headed, and look good in green. While YYH and HXH have intense plots, they are able to incorporate humor. Lastly, both the ops and eds are amazing!

Both are about a tough kid who learns he has special magical powers and takes on ever-stronger enemies with the help of friends, and everyone uses all sorts of power-ups, skills and magic to overcome obstacles. Both shows feature tournaments, as well as normal fights, and both characters have a signature move where they shoot a blue beam of spirit energy from their hand. 

Both are full of otherworldly adventures, lots of fighting, and lovable characters that grow on you more and more with time. 

These are both considered classics and are shonen action shows that follow a group of young exceptional people on an extraordinary adventure. Both shows have fantastic world building and character designs set in vast worlds with super natural and martial arts aspects.  

Both have a very similar atmosphere, with similar comedy, and a super-powered team of characters going on various otherworldly adventures. Both are known for their iconic, eccentric protagonist, ballistic tournament story arcs, and draw heavy influences from the history of Martial Arts and mythology (more so Chinese for Dragon Ball, more so Buddhist for Yuu Yuu Hakushou). If you love surprises, comedy between characters that test their potential, and the general atmosphere of both shows being incredibly similar, then feel free to watch these classic, influential anime.

Comedy + Action Delinquent Characters and Fights Supernatural Themes Demons 

Yusuke and Oga are both alpha male punks who can't be beat in a street fight and are constantly being challenged. Both characters suddenly face a life changing event and find themselves taking on bigger and badder enemies with new found power. Both involve demons and an infant demon lord with a pacifier. Both animes are funny with a love interest underneath the predictable action.  

Both series involve street/school fighting and involve other worldly areas.  

In Yu Yu Hakusho, the MC is uncaring and is the strongest in the city. People feared him and he always is in fights. Same story as Beelzebub. Both anime show them getting used to their powers. Differences: I felt Beelzebub was more of a comedy genre than action and the storyline kind of lacked a little, while Yu Yu Hakusho has a better storyline, and better action (this show does have comedy in it).  

-Both have a demon realm involved -Both have the human realm invaded by some sort of demons -Both main characters are delinquents -Both are battle shonen and have friends being gained along the journey 

Long(ish) shounen series with a delinquent main character. The main character was a strong fighter at first and got even stronger when they got powers from demon babies (son of Enma in both). They are also comedic but Beelzebub is much more so than YYH.  

The two series utilize an older style of drawing, but are action packed. There are quite a few supernatural elements in both series. The end goal for the protagonists in both series is also not easy to see either. 

Both are shounen anime with lots of action and arcs and around 100 episodes. Both involve a "real"/modern world and alternate occult/supernatural settings that they tend to switch between. Both have lead main characters who can be rather brash and rude, but who have hearts of gold when you get down to it. Both have established main "squads" who they recruit over the course of the series and fight together with (pretty standard for shounen though) who are a mix of humans and demons. All in all, I think if you enjoy one you may very well enjoy the other. (They both also have English Dubs that aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami segment though that's kinda irrelevant.) read more

I don't usually write recommendations for an anime if someone's already recommended it before me. But I can't stress this recommendation enough. Inuyasha is about a girl named Kagome who fell down her family's shrine's well, which transported her to the feudal era. Demons are fighting over the Sacred Jewel (which gives immense power to anyone who possesses it). Kagome tries to prevent a demon from flying away with it by casting an arrow, effectively shattering the jewel in the process, and the shards go flying in every direction. She helps collect the Sacred Jewel shards, and bring down hundreds of demons in the process. Yu Yu Hakusho is about a teenage delinquent named Yuusuke who unexpectedly dies uncharacteristically by pushing a young child out of the way of an oncoming car, sacrificing his own life. Nobody in the Spirit World knows what to do with him because they didn't expect him to die that day, let alone by a selfless act. To reward him/not knowing what to do, the Spirit World gives him another chance at life, and he becomes a Spirit Detective, hunting down malevolent demons. Both series have plenty of action, humour, and a splash of romance every now and then. Both are over 100 episodes, so it'll be something to keep you entertained for a while. They're both definitely worth the watch. Just a note, Yu Yu Hakusho was made by the guy who wrote HunterxHunter. read more

Ushio to Tora is a new shounen anime based off a 90s manga, so if you really enjoyed the classic Yu Yu Hakusho and need something to fill the void then check out Ushio to Tora for more supernatural adventures! Both anime are full of great comedy and awesome action involving an average teenage boy gaining supernatural powers and taking on demons and youkai! While there are similarities, there are also many differences so neither are a rehash of another and will be a fresh 90s experience with quality animation, memorable characters and old school music. If you enjoyed the vibe and themes of Yu Yu Hakusho, then Ushio to Tora is definitely worth checking out. read more 

they're both about spirits and demons, the main characters are similiar 

In both anime, the main protagonists are delinquents who can communicate with spirits and gain special powers. Even though Ushio to Tora is a new adaptation, it was based on a manga from the 90's, and since they are both series from the 90's, they both have a similar vibe. Both anime has a lot of action, and similar humor. 

Both are stories with humans teaming together with demons to fight other demons. YuYu Hakusho focuses more on fighting and plot while Ushio to Tora has more themes of humor and fighting. 

Both are 90's series about kickass teenagers fighting Yokai with their cool Yokai friends, though Ushio is far more episodic, the two have pretty cool action and likable characters. 

Story starts off with a delinquent who likes to beat up bullies and cause trouble to catch attention only to involved in an accident that starts for real. They are later joined by companions with an experienced mentor whose past is tragic, a stoic, ruthless, and intelligent black haired individual said to be their competition, and a useless, annoying, and whiny brat who wants to get stronger to reach their goal. By partaking missions until they encounter a powerful antagonist to kick off the story (Toguro for YYH and Akatsuki for Naruto). I find Naruto to be YYH but with ninjas if you can swap HxH but it does have elements with HxH due to Togashi being Kishi's good friend. read more 

Like Naruto, Yuu Yuu Hakusho best moments are the fights which are epic and usually decided by a cunning strategy. Pretty much all the characters are likeable.

Shounen series about two things: the supernatural, and fight tournaments. YYH is more about spirit-based attacks and demons while SK is about ghosts, but both like to toss in references to Japanese mythology and spiritual beliefs so there's still lots of common ground.

Most claim it to be the classic shonen but YYH is similar in a sense where theres a tournament where demons battle it out (though not for a reason like becoming god) thought it is based on heaven and the main character is a unique teenager. 

Both contain lots of fighting, lots of growing up, and both are kind of tournament based. Also both have lots of feels <3 

The Battles are strong, and in both series, the story arcs go across many episodes. The characters are all well-developed, bad guys included. The protagonists end up going through some very dark times in both, and there is a hint of romance in both. If you liked the protagonist dealing with his father (like in the final arc of YYH), then that works well for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood too. 

Although Yu Yu Hakusho is a much older show, it still has the same feel of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It focuses on the CHARACTERS(not gore or hentai etc), a major element of Fullmetal. In addition, there is strong characterization and twists/turns that will always keep you intrigued. In addition, if you are into longer anime Yu Yu Hakusho is for you. Although they deal with different worlds, both have a supernatural elements that sadly are not like our world, so there is a definite fantasy quality to both. Lastly, both of the main characters are constantly trying to make the world better or trying to prove themselves. They are loud, funny, and overall endearing. I highly recommend watching this show if you loved Fullmetal.  read more 

Both shows revolve around strong main characters who have changed their lives: Ed losing his limbs and Yusuke...dying. FMA revolves mostly around Ed and Al as the main characters while YYH focuses on Yusuke and his friends. Both shows have extremely strong plot lines with little-to-no filler. Both have action, comedy, sadness, seriousness, and even a hint of romance. In both shows you get to see the characters develop and grow as a person where you can see the difference from beginning to end. Truly, these two shows have the best story lines I've ever seen. No part of either show is boring, and you will want to re-watch them again and again. The biggest difference between them is their age. FMA:B came out in 2009, while YYH is about 20 years old, so the animation is a bit dated—but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a chance! :D read more

All the characters feel samey (Josuke is like Uremashi, Okuyasu is like Kuwabara) in a good way and each episode is addictive. Also using paranormal and psychic-esque abilities try to find a mass murderers. 

The most distinct similarity between Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable and Yuu Yuu Hakusho is that they are both set in 90s Japan suburbs. Moreover, the cast of both shows are comprised of teenagers who fight against the forces of evil by using their supernatural abilities. Like Jojo Part 4, Early Yuu Yuu Hakusho also has slice-of-life elements in which the protagonists have to defeat the "villain of the week" through strategic and unpredictable methods.  

This follows two teenage boys in highschool trying to solve mysteries and save humanity. The main characters have similar personalities. The authors are friends and did art for each other. Araki draws clear lines of inspiration from yuyu hakusho in this season. Definitely worth a watch.  

Araki got some serious inspiration in Yu Yu Hakusho while making the part 4 of jojo, the archetypes of the two main characters in both animes are almost equal, being Yusuke and Josuke some kind of delinquent students and they have their closest friend, Kuwabara and Okuyasu being both of them dumb and kind-hearted, also Koichi got his entire design from the character Kiyoshi Mitarai. 

Both shows combine elements of action & comedy. They also both have similar characters and art styles. However, Kenshin is set in ancient Japan, and is more about swordfighting while Yu Yu Hakusho is set in modern-day Japan and is more about fantastical power battles. 

both Rurouni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho were a hit back in the 90's bearing similar animations and the stars of both shows are classic badasses ..the difference is one is more suburban and set in old school feudal japan starring a polite swordsman..where as the other is more urban and set to a modern time period of japan and features a rude and more impolite MC who fights using supernatural powers ...also rurouni kenshin almost feels like a spin off featuring human versions of Kurama and Hiei. Both have good fight scenes and a lovely group with badass protagonist 

The first thing which stands out for me is the similar styles. Second, both are action backed and involve a lot of fighting. Both series involves the MC not only growing over the course of the series but also gaining new friendships and alliances. Both series also tend to get overlooked at times when people discuss Anime, yet they are still enjoyable to watch. 

They are both a series based on fighting. While in Kenichi he starts off weak and helpless, in Yuu Yuu hakusho, he starts off as a delinquent. However, theya re both relatively weak. In Yuu Yuu Hakusho, instead of fighting delinquents and other steet people, Yu Yu is a 'spirit detective' which essentially means he fights demons and such. In both shows they strive to get stronger and stronger. There is also a fair amount of comedy intertwined into both shows.  

kenichi and yu yu are fighting based anime where the dude starts off as a nobody but then works hard and gets stronger per fight. also the soundtracks to yu yu hakusho and kenichi are no stranger to jazz when it comes to musical scores playing in the background not all but some of the ost in both these shows contain piano jazz the only differences are the love interest in yyh is allittle more of a tsundere nagger where as in kenichi the love interest is a sweet girl..yusuke is a rude delinquent while kenichi is a conservative good boy kind of person..yusuke fights demons kenichi fights human badasses read more 

They're both about kids who are good at fighting who, as a result of an unexpected life-threatening incident become involved with the paranormal. Yu Yu Hakusho goes almost immediately into a training arc and a tournament while Jujitsu Kaisen starts out with the MC getting put into a more formal magical school. The MC of both is basically a loudmouthed idiot but they're both pretty endearing.  

I feel like Jujutsu Kaisen was definitely inspired by Yuu Yuu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter. Aesthetic wise I can compare it more to HxH but the plot is definitely more like Yuu Yuu Hakusho. Both protagonist unexpectedly become involved with the supernatural world that surrounds the regular humans and both of them have loud personalities. 

Supernaturally powered characters make use of tools and ridiculous abilities to fight one another. Each fight feels distinct in both how they play out and appear visually. Unbelievably strong meathead MC is the guiding force for the main cast. Almost all forward action is concurrent with what they do throughout the show. The group dynamic between said MC and his allies becomes quickly engrossing. 

These series are both considered classics and are from the same time period (late 80's early 90's) both also come from weekly shonen jump. Possibly due to both containing a lot of 80's anime common stylistic choices and music/OSTs ; watching both these in the modern day, they give me very similar vibes! I draw a lot of parallels between Seiya himself and Yusuke. Both young, hot headed and tough Japanese boys who's tenacity and combat prowess brings them to the forefront of a larger than life conflict. 

Classic shounen anime with quite similar artstyle. Both are long running series focused on action with the fights taking a long time. They follow the usual battle shounen tropes such as tournaments, but to be fair, these were the anime that helped with setting the tropes rather than copying them. The protagonists are also kinda similar, but that's to be expected. 

4 male warriors go around and hunt demons, using supernatural powers. Both shows are also made by the same studio, and both are oftne compared to Dragon Ball/DBZ (Saiyuki for being based off of Journey to the West, YYH for being a Shounen with very similar traits). Both feature great dubs. I find that YYH is better, but Saiyuki's a good follow-up if you need a show to fill the void from YYH. 

Long-ish anime with a not-entirely-human main character quartet. These are the natural recommendations if you're looking for a dynamic group of MCs that, as characters, each stand on their own extremely well, but are made even better by bouncing off of the other members of the group. Plenty of demon action, too. 

One is a high school comedy-drama while the other's a supernatural action series that has only a teeny bit of high school related drama early on. In spite of these different premises however, the characters of both shows' leads are remarkably similar. Both Onizuka and Yusuke are slightly perverted street smart tough guys, though they're also good guys deep down and often wind up helping others out in their own unique fashion. The two aren't exactly the brightest and often rush head first into trouble without thinking, yet despite that both of them somehow manage to always triumph even when the odds are against them. And while Onizuka wins over his each students who initially despise him, Yusuke likewise turns quite a few of his rivals and enemies into friends and allies. read more 

One of the joys, to me at least, of GTO is the cultural significance, and by that I mean the fact that it was airing nearly 19 years ago from the date of writing this review. While I think it is dangerous to assume to understanding Japanese culture strictly from watching anime, I also often argue that you can definitely get a feel for real-life historical issues, especially in slice-of-life, of course. Yu Yu Hakusho does a similar job, complete with silly "Yankee" pompadour hairdos, and 90's aesthetics for hair, cars, and color-pallets.  

Both are Fighting Shounen Animes with a lot of action and both go to way of "fights with more punches and kicks than fireballs/projectiles". Also, both have a "badboy" protagonist, a girl who loves the main, a Loser boy, Cool loking antagonists and a group who walk together with main. 

These shows both have martial arts and supernatural elements. They both follow extremely gifted fighters who far surpass what most people believe capable and leagues above the "professional" worlds of televised fighting e.g. boxing, wrestling anything for public entertainment. They also both have lovable delinquent style characters as some of their main cast and who you personally root for. I see a lot of similarities between Nagi and Bob & Yuusuke and Kuwabara. 

There's the obvious similarity everyone and their mom has pointed out: Both of these series feature babies who are mentors to the protagonists. Menma and Reborn are both older than they actually appear to be and have a bullying-out-of-love relationship with the protagonists of their respective series. But the similarities between YYH and KHR doesn't just stop there. It's a bit hackneyed to say, but both series give off a similar feel. The sense of camaraderie between the protagonists and their bros give off the same vibe. And the way they all get stronger together, as a team, while each dealing with their own demons at times, is the same as well. I'm just saying that if you've liked one, you probably won't hate the other. read more 

Similar pattern, a bunch of teenagers getting involved in dangerous world. They fight and grow, in both strength and friendship. And also an infant with pacifier, who in fact is powerful adult. 

Both Have a delinquent protagonist who changes his style by some factor. Both are very funny. 

Both YYH and HNI have action but sometimes they are a slice of life. They both have a vibe of the 90's. What both series do very well is the characters. The characters in both are very developed and have a lot of depth, you connect to each and every one of the characters and find out about their past and their story. That is what makes the series more realistic and deeper, I like both. 

-creator of the Sailor Moon series is married to the creator of the Yu Yu Hakusho series -both Yu Yu Hakusho and Sailor Moon started airing within the same year 1992 -both Yu Yu Hakusho and Sailor Moon feature main characters that are 14 year old adolescent kids who by some way shape or form, are liable to be frowned upon by their elders -both main characters are chosen for some supernatural purpose of sorts and are kinda reluctant to follow through with it - both main characters constantly fight off all sorts of demons and monsters -both main characters amass a team who have individual personalties and powers -supernatural travel to dark worlds -usagi is a pain to her mentor luna much like yuuske is a pain to his mentor genkai -as far as character development amongst the team, usagi like kuwabarra is also a dork and a buffoon. and on top of that sailor mars Rin doesnt get along with usagi and would often argue with her much like hiei would with kuwabarra. and rin also specializes in fire like hiei .. Both are long-running shonens that were originally published in shonen jump in the 90s. Both have a format of following a group of 4-5 characters that often were originally encountered as enemies before they become allies. Both protagonists are japanese, have delinquent tendencies but with hearts of gold and use an ability related to pointing their index finger. Both feature paranormal and horror elements as well as spirits. Both have supporting characters that fight with swords, pyrokinesis, and vines. Both have shonen battles that are fought through methods other than normal fighting. Both have nonhuman supporting characters that serve as comic relief. Both have a huge focus on comedy and character development, with occasional emotional moments. read more 

Both are outstanding isekai[-adjacent] battle shonen with a strong air of mystery. Several of the main characters have similar personalities and are equally easy to care about without just being goodie goodies. 

These are classic animes that I've watched as my childhood. If you love over power action moves or decent long animes than this is your anime. The character designs are eye catching and the action are impressive to watch. 

These 2 animes are similar in so many ways that it's scary. And all of the dragon ball series is similar to Yuu Yuu Hakusho. If you are a big DBZ fan like I am I can assure you that you will get some serious DBZ vibes from this show. There's also the fact that all of the main character English voice actors are also the same voice actors from dragon ball z even the goku English voice actor is in this anime. Everything is similar from the characters to the fight scenes and even their fighting techniques are similar to DBZ 

Shippuden is what you consider YYH's version of Chapter Black since it revolves around the heroes fighting a group of powerful supernatural users led by a leader who is said to be the heroes' predecessor with the goal of destroying the world for the greater good. Later the mentors in both stories have a hidden connection with one of the antagonists who is shrouded with mystery and is the reason why the story started. Messages in both shows are deep and real to the point that it furthers the Dark Tone of it's prequel to a much more depressing manner that will hit you hard. Even you can find humanity no longer good but at the same time you can sympathize with the bad guys more. Naruto may have gotten comparison to Dragonball but it is in fact the modern YYH+HxH in it's finest days. read more

They both follow young tough protagonists who are renown for their fighting skill. Both shows have great art styles and good animation. The characters and character designs are good across the board. They are both shonen, martial arts & action shows.

Some bad-ass shounen actions that includes adventure and both show the out right hilarious comedy but get serious when they want to protect their friends. 

These two anime feature battles between different factions of demons with each character having their own special powers. The protagonist from each is (mostly) human, but is dragged into these conflicts through circumstance. Check out both of these for the Shounen action and the diverse cast of characters.

why recommend and compare this you may ask? well try a hot chick who has a mixture of Yusuke and Hiei in her attitude. Revy the way she behaves the way she carries herself her bad assery makes her a female version of both Yusuke and Hiei Yusuke is a rude, sarcastic, arrogant delinquent who loves whooping people's asses and so is Revy Hiei is dark and apathetic has a rough background and relishes in destroying people just like revy is and does  

Both series utilize bright colors and a more classic style for animation. Both deal with the supernatural. While one deals with the afterlife, the other deals with monsters existing without the afterlife connection. Both also involve a main character who was originally just human. 

In both the anime are little invisible flying demons, and both the protagonists are the son of a important demon. 

Both series involve the main characters being involved with the spiritual world. Both protagonists work under the spiritual world to attain supernatural powers. Both series have an emphasis on action as they both have fluent animation and interesting battles. Both series put the spotlight on only the main characters and don't really emphasize the side characters as much. The main characters are interesting with each of them serving a different purpose and all have different goals. They all have unique personalities and showcase intriguing interactions with others.  

On the surface these two series don't seem to have much in common at all. But in fact there's actually a lot of similarities between the two series. Both follow a team of four heroes (a rose haired feminine with plant-based attacks, two high school aged rivals with blue and orange energy respectively, and a powerful shorter member from another world with a dark past) and both series have leads who are both in high school and both are sort of tough guy loners with hearts of gold who choose to solve problems with their fists and have no problem punching beasts larger than them in the face. They also have access to a sort of spirit energy that they can use in battle than becomes stronger as they fight and this energy becomes amplified if they become angry or need to save the people they love. Also early in the series they meet a rival who far outclasses them but as the series goes on they become even with each other and eventually surpass them. Aside from that both series have a good mixture of characters, comedy, drama, and action (this probably being the digimon season with the most tradition shonen style action). If you're a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho and found yourself not liking any of the previous seasons of Digimon, you might want to give Savers a second chance, it might be more up your alley. read more

The main protagonist in both anime must use their new abilities to fight against powerful evil supernatural forces. Both anime were release in the early 1990's with similar animation and a similar vibe. Both anime are quite action-packed, but 3x3 Eyes is more violent and has way more blood compare to Yu Yu Hakusho. If you like one, you should enjoy the other.
