Both feature life in space on a huge ship, both have an ace pilot protagonist with several supporting female characters fancying him. Both offer powerful sci-fi storyline touching various sci-fi phylosophical questions. Note that Knights of Sydonia is dystopic, thriller seriers while Macross Frontier is utopic adventure.

One of the main characters, Lacus Clyne, is also a Intergalatical peace-keeping singer. Both are set in space, and involve battles between mecha/transformer type machines. Both have elements of drama, sci-fi, romance (love triangles and rectangles, oh my!).
report Recommended by Cyrius
Both animes use music, singers and idols as a way to fight in the world that they are living in, whether it is to survive or for power/hope.

Both revolve around music and romance. In the case of WA, the male protagonist is a wimp. In the case of MF, the male protagonist is less of a wimp. BUT the selling point for both series are in their music, both have very strong female singer/seiyu and will not disappoint you in that regards.

As one watched the first episode of "Suisei no Gargantia", the humans must battle an strong, alien lifeform, the Hideauze. In "Macross Frontier", the humans also battle an lifeform, the Varja. In both cases they do damage but aren't able to win out. Of course this is the only resemblance between the two. But it's a good start.

It seems that the main male protagonist from both series gets caught up into some affairs related to the military and mecha warfare. Their lives changes forever from that day. Both series' main male protagonist seems to be brave but at the same time gets angered easily. He also seems to have feelings for one of the main female characters. Both series involves mecha, action, science fiction, as well as strange origins related to the main antagonists.

Both series feature share many similar themes besides the obvious themes of mechas and space battle. Politics play pretty important roles in both series and is the catalyst for much of the events that occur although it may not be immediately apparent. The enemy isn't always clear and will shift so that entities once thought of as allies are in fact the real enemies and some enemies become allies. Complicated relationships such as love triangles, unrequited love, and betrayal play a fairly central role. Both series also feature at least one songstress that is capable of reaching the star pilot through song even at great  read more

Both involve mecha battles in galaxy In both the living places of humans are being invaded by some unknown creatures Both have ultimate technology There's lots of romance in both

Both anime are set in deep space and feature a lot of fights between humans and an alien race, human using mechas and aliens being insectoids.

These two are among my favorites for "music-incorporated" anime. While in both series there is an emphasis of plot elsewhere from music, music nevertheless weaves itself into the fabrics of the story, producing a perfect, brilliant, interesting complement to the main storylines.

The main correlation between the two franchise is on full-fledge displayment; in their apparent revealing of an initially light-hearted scenario, gloomy themes of galactic battles are occurring. Both have fabulous artwork now apparently layered over by loads of fan service, which may or may not be distracting at times. A great watch for mecha fans, though AKB the next stage still consists of chiefly slice of life scenes, and lots of great soundtracks which fulfill their purposes within and outside of the actual series. AKB first season was much more honorable in focusing on hope-relate themes of the idols' future, which holds less significance in this  read more

Both have mechas check, both have some romance check, both have mysterious girls check, crazy crew and cool ship check, both are great check. What else do you need.

Macross Frontier is a sci-fi mech like A/Z with really nice animation and sound (loved the ost of both), so if you want to see pretty space-mech fights watch this. But guess what, Macross also has a decent plot and well written characters!? So if you are feeling salty about A/Z's ending or want a well written mech series then check out Macross.

Mecha with absolutely fabulous protagonists

Both anime's share amazing music. While Beck is more rock inclined, Macross Frontier is more J-pop inclined. Macross Frontier does not focus very much on the musical aspect seeing as how it is an action mecha romance anime, but the music does appear quite a bit, and the music is such a perfect compliment to the already amazing fighting mecha scenes. If you love music, I highly recommend watching both of these. Be wary of the genres each specialize in.

To infinity and beyond. Both series involves the mecha genre, action, and drama. Macross Frontier contains more of the romance theme while Mouretsu Pirates is on the action side. However, both anime(s) offers plenty of space opera fun as well as some moments that sci-fi fans will not forget.
report Recommended by Stark700
Although the theme and story are different, these two series contain the sci-fiction and mecha theme that revolves both series. Also plenty of drama, action, and romance throughout.
report Recommended by Stark700
Both series involves mecha and an alien like invasion present throughout both anime. Both series contain comedy, action, drama, some tragedy, and later romance. Both series also contain a cast of characters involved with the military.

Want to watch a somewhat typical love triangle story in a futuristic mecha setting? A story with complex set up, and does not fail spectacularly in its conclusion? With a plot that involves alien invasion? Watch RahXephon and Macross Frontier!

The similarities in setting and sci-fi technology are striking, and it seems that VoaDS must have been a great influence when creating the world of Macross Frontier.
report Recommended by Lazhward
Both series feature fast pace mecha action with a sub tone of romance and humor. Both also features a main character who loves and has natural talent for piloting mechs and teammates who support them along the way as they strive to improve.

+Lead characters are dropped into pivotal roles in a larger conflict. +Out of the many anime I've seen, even including all other recommendations featured in this section, these two are the only ones that share a similar ambience in the setting. +Agile Mech combat. +Brief scenes featuring peaceful school life. +Culturally important/popular women are friends or at least relative to the Leads. --While Lelouch has more freedom in the events surrounding him, Alto is merely a "foot soldier"-(hate this excessively used characterization).
report Recommended by dragonhold24
similarities:- space battles. romance, drama. earth spaceships has a mission to safe earth. i loved both the series but Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is much better in terms of story setting, pace and characters. Both are must watch

-Mecha-based-but-actually-romance-anime -Is about personal growth and coming of age/getting in terms with one's sexuality/love life -Has love triangle (more pronounced in Macross, as usual) -Is about an underdog that had to use odd ways to get to become a pilot -Is about people stranded on a post apocalyptic area who wish to become free -Has some dark conspiracy/government that controls the life of the youth and their use as combatants

Mechas, explosions, wars and great plots. The characters in both stories are good and you can feel very involved with them.

These two animes kinda give me the same vibe. Both has romance and there's girls who sing. Though the setting is entirely different, Macross F is all about space. I'd recommend you to check Macross Frontier out if you enjoyed LOST SONG and likewise.
report Recommended by piisamirodda
In both there is a good romantic feeling and both are good romance animes. Also in both animes the female character/s have strong feeling on male protagonist.
report Recommended by pc_magas
They are both anime in which a naive protagonist is forced to face reality and fight in giant mecha -giant mecha -mecha battles -similar background stories -amazing characters This is the show for that little corner of your head that is secretly wanting you to spend the entire night watching this mech fest of awesomeness.
report Recommended by nguyenco
Both feature fast pace action with a main character skilled at piloting mechas, serving an organization in order to protect those they care about. In Macross, it's the SMS against aliens and in Mars Daybreak, it's the pirates of Aurora against other pirates and the Navy. They both also go into some of the daily lives that the main character goes through as part of the organization, and have sub tones of romance and humor.

This anime is very much like Gundam-00 The movie, Both has aliens species invading at first and have became sworn enemies since then because of some misunderstanding between the two races. After some battles both sides enemies shared the same thoughts and understood each other, and the story ends with everyone live happily ever after. Great anime and movie.

Macross Frontier and Majestic Prince both have very fast paced and highly detailed space-opera mecha action with a dash of vibrant colors.
report Recommended by Chaospan
Both are heavily focused on military action and war Gallian chronicles follows more of a platoon throughout an entire war while Macross focuses more on a band of surviving humans. Both are great, the music and themes are unparalleled and the action and story telling is unique.

Cross Ange is actually quite different from Macross F in its basic storyline, if you look past the obvious mecha and romance subplots, but the themes explored are similar. The idea that people are free to choose their own destiny, that people who we conceive of as different and as the enemy may be remarkably similar to us and that music can transcend boundaries are effectively used in both anime. Some of the characters are also similar. While I definitely preferred Ange, the male MC 'princess' of Macross also displays the characteristic stubbornness, ambition, recklessness and disregard for authority that I liked about Ange. Guilty crown is took out some elements from macross frontier. They both contain songstresses whose songs are relevant to the plot. Both have action and decent plot development for a mecha anime, and are recommended to watch.
report Recommended by bunny1ov3r
Both animes have mechs in them and there are a boy who gets famous for being also good in mechs.
report Recommended by Decomed
This is similar because the series of plot twist and off the roof mech battles scenes Kick ass. The main characters all have a past that effects the story in someway. If you like Code Geass, then I recommend Macross Frointer 100%.

Many of funny moment ,many of action , moment of nice music ..... very cute shoujo's & of course MECHA'S !! .. so if you like FNP style maybe you gonna liked Macross F ..

Both are set on the future, where people can travel in the space. Both involve attacks of alien beings (the varja in MF and Alien plants in JOS), also both deal with experiments on one of the main characters. There is also a love triangle.
report Recommended by Orulyon
Both are space opera with mecha and singing, lovable characters and romance.

I made this recommendation for Outlaw Star because everyone is forgetting about this anime has a lot on Meccha and Space ship adventures and what not. If you like the concept of Meccha and animes that takes place in space then this is definitely the type of anime worth checking out. It has all the Sci-fi/Fantasy of a good anime. Both animes are definitely are really good to check out.

Bubblegum Crisis and Macross Frontier both have strong female characters and feature a great blend of catchy pop rock and action scenes.
report Recommended by SoloButterfly
I think they are both really similar due to the fact that both involve a war between aliens and mankind and the use of immensly advanced technology.
report Recommended by jaxu3878
Both feature a green haired waif with very few memories of her past, and whose singing is enough to make your ears bleed (in the case of Prayers, quite literally). Of the two, Macross Frontier is the better show by a long margin.
report Recommended by Archaeon
Macross Frontier and Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song combine elements from idol anime and science fiction anime to create an engaging action series. Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song is somehow able to transform an idol into the terminator while maintaining narrative and character cohesion. If you're unfamiliar with the Macross franchise then Macross Frontier is an excellent entry point because its characters are disconnected from the previous series. It also contains more action and drama than the previous series. You are sure to enjoy both series.

Kind of reminded me of Vandread, both animes are set in space and fighting some kind of bugs
report Recommended by Useless
I think it's very comparable to Macross Frontier since both; 1) Involves the war between mankind and intraresterial beings 2) Love traingle between characters 3) Don't need to be a fan of Mecha/sci-fic anime to like Evangelion 4) Beautiful soundtracks After watching Macross Frontier, it reminded me of the days that I'd being watching evangelion.
report Recommended by jaxu3878
Both series are similar in many ways: Both have mechas, a lot of war and conflict going on between invasion of an outerworld force from another planet. Story involves young soldiers training to be involved in the military and fight in robots by defending home from attacks from foreign enemy.

Great Sci-fi shows in Space.

Both centre around a guy who breaks into a secret world and finds himself outranked by unexpected friends

Both of this series feature stunning 2D+3D graphics and of course mecha mech mecha!!!

Similar sci-fi aesthetic, flying powered armor, action/romance, cute girls.

You have the same fighting to save the planet from Alien invaders idea. You also have a love triangle, although not as clearly defined. It gave off the same feel as Macross Frontier.
report Recommended by EzmierTheSwift
The artwork is beautiful in both of these. Not necessarily the best reason to recommend as the genres are totally different but i would definately recommend both to anyone.
report Recommended by CtrlAlexDelete
Both are mecha series with a femenine-looking male main character that ends crossdressing at some point.
report Recommended by ZettaiRyouiki
+ The plots are the same, with them fighting again unknowns/aliens. + The music are great in both, however I liked macross frontier's more. - The plot in macross frontier is more fleshed out, i feel. - There is no triangle relationship in QC, which is in MF. Less romance orientated in QC. - More actual fighting in QC, rather than singing in MF.
report Recommended by Saiyukire
Regarding their stories these two are COMPLETELY different, but the relationships between Sora/Layla and Sheryl/Lanka as well as their personalities are very similar. Layla and Sheryl are both seasoned performers, who feel threatened by talented newcomers Sora and Lanka. Even so they eventually become friends and work together to achieve harmony. If you like strong Female characters that chase after their dreams while never giving up, than it's likely that you'll be able to find something you'll like in both these anime.
report Recommended by Fayere
Colourful and brightful animation, lot of flashes and explosions, lot of Monsters, a save the world type plot with a kickass scene at the end and a sort of rivalry/comradery relation between the two female lead. Also both Sheryl Nome and Cutey Honey have an obscur an tragic. They probably don't have the same kind of personnality but they fall into the same category.
report Recommended by HooHiraiBunny
Mecha, space opéra, humanity against aliens that look like insect and stunning animation.

Basquash is basically Macross Frontier with basketball replacing alien invasion.
