Story
Hentai in general for anime i feel is meant to cause 'release' for the viewer. Sadly, some companies attempt to capitalize on that aspect by providing smut after smut without substance (story). This anime is an exception and i am glad it exists. Here one experiences a lot of different genres while providing a realistic turnout to explain them. In addition the story is portrayed in a matter that one might say they are getting the price of two for the cost of one. For this anime has a mini series ... thrown in. Alas, the most wonderful aspect is its blend of comedy and romance. An aspect that they hold dear to heart from start to finish. As can be even proven true by their ending musical.

Overall: if you want an anime to share with friends or more likely your partner i suggest this one. The anime is softhearted. The characters are devoted to each other. There is comical flair to prevent boredom. You even get a bonus 'send off' at the end. Which i saw to be an encouragement to continue you with a smile in life.

Darling was a show I only knew the elevator pitch of. The story of a hentai artist who has to maintain an erection for a month straight to get his work done under deadline feels like ripe fodder for any number of stories. It could have been a satirized, but ultimately serious look at the difficulties surrounding the manga industry and independent artistry. It was only when the show started throwing around the phrase "Hyper Erection Mode" that it became obvious that this mid-2000's hentai had no ambitions greater than being a mid-2000s hentai.

Darling is the story of Darling, and his newly married wife, Honey. ... Those are their actual names, as far as I'm aware. They're called upon to create a hentai anthology in an unreasonable timeframe, and to facilitate this, Honey provides visual and physical "inspiration" for Darling's stories, all of which star the two of them and various people in their lives, because character design is hard. Rather than Darling's need for constant tumescence being a problem for Darling, a source of physical and emotional stress to underscore the urgency of the job, babysitting Darling's erection is a plot point introduced solely for Honey to be constantly sexualized. Again, such things are par for the course for mid-2000s hentai, so it's not worth too much ink to complain about. Credit where it's due, I did find myself genuinely appreciating some of the dynamic between Darling and Honey, outside of their stories. At no point are we given any indication that Honey is anything other than a willing and enthusiastic participant in her modeling and fluffing duties. For a hentai series whose interludes occasionally delve into dubcon, that is frankly a refreshing change.

Speaking of interludes, the bulk of the show's sex scenes are contained in Darling's anthology. Darling covers standard settings and situations, at least as far as mid-2000s hentai is concerned. However, as it turns out, this unique, genius mangaka just so happens to be one of the worst kinds of porn writers one can encounter in the wild. Beyond the fact that his scenarios are stock cliches with no real changes, he's also, just... like, embarrassingly into total power conversion, and can't write anything else. Every other story reveals that the male lead (played by him, natch) also happens to keep women as sex slaves. Spy thriller? Bad guy keeps sex slaves as a side hustle. Alien Prince? Dresses up the space cadets in French maid outfits. Lesbian romantic confession? "Hey! I'm here too and your girlfriend is also my sex slave! Just so you know!" It makes me wonder what part of his body needs to be engorged with blood, so that he could sketch out an actual plot.

As for everything else, it's on the bad side of mediocre. The characters are serviceable anime designs for the time period, but things get uglier once their genitals are out. There's something about an anatomically precise vulva between the legs of a stylized anime woman that feels inherently uncanny, like putting a fleshlight between the legs of a pipe-cleaner doll. The sound design is forgettable, except for the sex scenes, which I always have to turn down, because the original Japanese audio of Honey making sex noises got old halfway through her first orgasm. The world outside the stories contains a million plot points that mean nothing, go nowhere, and are only remembered as bewildering happenstance after the fact.

Overall, in the pantheon of hentai, Darling reaches the vaunted heights of "another one." Light-hearted enough to be some amount of fun, and maybe worth a watch if you really like rapid fire BDSM, but ultimately nothing to write home about. You'll either think it's okay, or get bored and go do something better with your life. It's not worth any more emotional invesment than that. I give it a "French maids in space" out of ten.

The story follows Jun, a man who works on porn manga. Unfortunately, he's been given a project that has a incredibly close deadline, but thankfully he has a special power allowing him to work at hyper speed as long as he is aroused, called "Hyper Erection Mode". Lucky for him, his assistant Miyuki is also his wife and she's ready to give him a hand with work.

Firstly, the character designs are pretty bad. The main characters wife's hair looks like a giant bird taking off, and looks like it's 10 feet wide, with the rest of her looks like one of those awful do-it-yourself ... "Draw Your Own Anime" books where the anime "characters" just look off. I know hentai standards are low, but Jesus Christ, aren't hentai supposed to help someone get off, and by extension, supposed to look appealing on some level. In fact, most of the characters have this look. It's pretty hard to get off to "My first anime design!". Plus the entire reason this is called Darling is that Jun's wife keeps calling him "darling". That might be the laziest reason for a title I've ever seen.

When it comes to the sex, the way the anime gets around it's limitations is by going into Jun's imagination when he's thinking of situations for his hentai manga. I guess it does it's job in that there are a variety of different situations for you to get off too, but all of the sex scenes have been done a thousand times, and they're not particularly well executed here.

The concept for Darling is good enough that I could see a good hentai studio pull something off with it, but we don't get any of that here. Instead we get lame comedy and some of the worst looking character designs that I've seen in a while. "But what about the English dub?" I hear no one asking. It gets close to being a so-bad-it's-good dub a few, but it doesn't quite get to the hilariously awful that some other more infamous dubs do. Sure, you get some amusing lines, such as "Oh yeah, I can feel that 4000 year history" as one character says about another characters pussy as he's fucking her, or "You can do it honey, I can believe in you" as the main characters wife blows him under the table as he's working on his manga.

There are a few memorable lines, such as of the characters fucking up the word manga as "magna", or the main character saying "I can't believe I have such a pretty wife, and on top of that, I have a great opportunity" said incredibly fast to try and fit it in with the lip flaps, or even the use of a sound effect of a can of soft drink opening and pouring it into a cup as the sound Jun coming in his wife, but those are so far and few between that I don't know if I can recommend sitting through this to hear that.

However, I can attest to there is one funny scene, and it's not because it's genuinely funny, but because it came out of nowhere, and that scene is where, in one of Jun's fantasies, the girl plays a flute, then a trumpet with her pussy. It come out of nowhere, and is hilarious. The punchline to this is that the person who hired Jun says that they can't publish this story because "It's too filthy". Considering some of the shit that I've seen a hentai do, a woman playing a trumpet with her pussy is not that unreasonable.

When it comes to so-bad-it's-good media, you're hoping for a complete train wreck, but Darling is more like watching a train set catch on fire. Briefly amusing, but not the spectacle that you want. Plus if you put "Darling Hentai" into google images, you get plenty of Darling in the Franxx porn, which makes for a hell of a better wank session than this thing.
