ART & SOUND SECTION: 7/10 [Very good for being realistic as hell.]
No weird hair colors, no wacky facial expressions, no out of place actions, no squeaky voices. The submarines and the ships are depicted in a completely realistic way. They look pretty aged and flat by today’s standards but they still do the trick.
STORY SECTION: 7/10 [Same here.]
- The story is about the crew of a new advanced nuclear submarine that refuses to follow orders that may kill hundreds of thousands of people in a possible upcoming war. It portrays how duty and justice contradict each other, based on how you view the world. The politicians on one side that seek more power, the military on the other that seeks glory and the humane crew in the middle are thrown into a philosophical debate that will seal the lives of countless people and change the world.
- I am warning you; there are no battles in it. It is about people talking and thinking and trying to emotionally convince others of their point of view. This movie is not for immature audience. As a story it is a lot more realistic and convincing than all those silly shonen and shojo we watch all the time.
- Still, besides the interesting story, the general plot is nothing much. Although whatever the characters say is interesting, the plot is quite simple and calm, without plot twists or shocking revelations to spice things a bit.
CHARACTER SECTION: 5/10 [The same things can be said about the characters.]
Although they are all quite realistic and different from one another, they are not given the time to be portrayed any further than from what we can tell based on what they say. So, they are half-good; great at present attitude, weak at past backdrop or future development.
VALUE SECTION: 7/10 [Submarines are expensive.]
Historical Value 2/3: This movie is famous for its politically centered story that makes it more realistic and mature than most anime. But is sure is not known much to the general public.
Rewatchability 1/3: It is quite boring. It has a lot of talking in it and the few action scenes are uninteresting (because they are too realistic).
Memorability 4/4: It stands out from the rest. Totally memorable.
ENJOYMENT SECTION: 4/10 [Submarines are also boring.]
The story and the characters are ok but the plot is too real to be considered interesting by most otakus. Most of us watch anime, which defy reality and present things in extravagant ways. Sorry; low enjoyment. It would be more attractive as a movie with real actors.
VERDICT: 6/10
The accused is found … GUILTY! … of being more boring than enjoyable.
SUGGESTION LIST
AIKa R-16: Virgin Mission and Aoi Umi no Tristia Silly series, full of fan service and pointless battles with submarines.
Blue Submarine No.6 & Tide-Line Blue War dramas, with a crew of a submarine trying to stop a war. Good premise but their potential is not allowed to shine as it should.
Uchuu Kuubo Blue Noah. A less serious and more action based series with submarines.
The Hunt for the Red Octomber. A famous Hollywood movie with submarines. read more

While I was watching "Silent Service" I couldn't help but thinking "damn this is like "Death Note"! Now here me out, I know it sounds odd at first that a submarine War drama set in the cold war, and a Mystery/ Psychological thriller set in modern day Japan would be anything alike, but let me explain.
Both animes have a type of "intellectual" battle going on. They both feture battles of wits. And while "Death Note" pits L verses Light, "Silent Service" puts Captain Shiro Kaieda against the world. In "Silent Service" you watch Kaieda use his wit, and unconventional use of a submarine (a highly advanced one, in fact the most advanced sub in the world) to outsmart, and outfight the U.S. Navy (it's entire Pacific Fleat) and at times Japan's SDF Navy. In "Death Note" we watch Light outsmart the worlds best police and detectives, and fight a "battle of wits" against L. While in "Death Note" international geopolitics keeps coming up in regards to Kira, it's not a main part of the show and always in the backdrop, however i"Silent Service" is almost entirely about realistic intense international geopolitics , especially the relationship between the U.S. and Japan.
And in both shows you can't walk away, and come back 5 minutes later, or you will be lost. Things happen very fast, and the status quo changes faster then you can blink!
Also in both series one man is out to change the world, and has a weapon of incredible power. In "Silent Service" Shiro Kaieda has the most advanced nuclear submarine in the world, and wants to change the world with it. In "Death Note" Light wants to make the world a better place by use of the supernatual notebook, the Death Note, which is an increble tool, and become the new God of the world. Both of these characters are so alike it's scary. They are both 100% sure of themselves, and outsmart the worlds best multiple times. They think what they are doing is right, and could be considered red the main villian of their anime series by many people (although not all), even though they are both the main characters.
While I find "Death Note" to the the better of the two, do not dismiss "Silent Service" as even for it's lenght and age it still has some great moments, and is a fun watch. "Death Note" is much more suspensful though, and that is where it is the strongest. "Silent Service" focuses more on political intrigue and that is where it is strongest.
If you like one of these, check out the other!

Both have ship battles, and share the same art style. Zipang is a lot newer, but Silent Service is still a good watch.
