Recommendations

Both shows start very moe, but then the real drama comes out.

Higruashi, like gakkou gurashi will have you building crazy theories on who's going insane and what is really happening all the way through the series.
report Recommended by Ooblagato
To put it simply, these stories are in a Highschool, "Post-Apocalyptic", Survival setting. Both shows portrays the drama in living in a world surrounded by "them". Each has it's own way to provide "service to the fans", but at the end of the day it's all about trying to survive in the god-forsaken world they live in. (Also the endings are performed by Maon Kurosaki.)

Gakkougrurashi and Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryoukou share a similar setting, they're are both post-apocalyptic. Gakkougurashi relies on bright colors and comedy with a splash of psychological drama. Where Shoujo Shuumtasu Ryouko might seem a lot slower paced with less dialogue but both shows do give off a similar vibe of eerie discomfort with moe style. If you've seen one I would recommend the other for a similar setting and overall world feel.
report Recommended by Nikoru-san
Both share a similar twist in tone at the end of the first episode, both feature horror elements and they have a similar art style

Cute girl see world in a bit strange way in both anime
report Recommended by MikuChan165
It's hard to say why they are so similar without spoiling either one, so I'd simply suggest if you've seen/are watching one, you should watch the other.
report Recommended by ButadonMeitantei
Both shows follow the lives of highschool students who try to live a normal highschool life despite the situation.

In this two shows, we have served with "Cute girl trapped in cruel game" On this side, we have cute girl trying to get survived from zombies apocalyptic And other side, we have cute girl being involved in a death match "Battle Royale" theme, and transform into their RPG Character as 'Mahou Shoujo' Both are from same studio, and similar Introduction ..

Gakkou Gurashi, like Corpse Party, is a violently horrifying anime that wears a moe-mask at all times.
report Recommended by Lolicon
Both cute girls doing cute things, where nothing out of the ordinary happens, just the girls enjoying their after school activities in their respective clubs
report Recommended by HalRyder
Both involve cute kids going on adventures Both involve said cute kids in their own group (Red Whistles and the School Live Club) Both give off an uneasy feeling that something dark is lurking around the corner Both include great OPs
report Recommended by gNat2
The Anime take on Zombie Apocalypse. Both have a light-hearted with sometimes serious approach on the theme. Zom 100 has Comedy with valuable life lessons while Gakkougurashi is almost Slife of Life style in the perspective of high school girls surviving in these conditions.
report Recommended by James_002
both shows mix horror elements with slice of life. gakkougurashi is about high school girls trying to survive a zombie apocalypse whereas alien 9 is about elementary school girls fighting an alien invasion.

Before I start, I'll say that you should watch Gakkou Gurashi ***without any prior knowledge***. Don't even click the "read more" button below on this recommendation. (There aren't really any spoilers, but yeah). The simple explanation about both animes is that they're both very happy (yet not entirely) shows with cutesy loli animation, lots of feels, and a bit (or a lot) of twist. If you like animes that have lots of feels, mix in very happy moments, and mix in very traumatic moments, both are good watches. ______________________________________ Kotoura-san focuses mainly on romance and Haruka Kotoura's traumatic past. With love and drama between her and the relationships she has  read more

Both series are nerve-wracking and exciting stories that blow you away from the first episode. Oh yeah and they are both set in an abnormal school settings

Gakkougurashi and Tokyo Magnitude share similar plot ideas. Each show has a tragic disaster, 8.0 earthquake and zombie apocalypse. The main cast composition is also similar in each series. Gakkougurashi has a group of high school girls and Tokyo Magnitude has an adult and two younger children. Both shows feature survival in different ways of how society would handle tragedy. These shows also have a psychological twist to them and showcase the main characters different ways of grieving.
report Recommended by Nikoru-san
The main chars in both series act cheerful despite having a messed up lifestyle. The show's themes and seriousness differs though.
report Recommended by -Koyuki-
Cute girls doing cute things, huh? Well even though both anime are set in a post-apocalyptic setting and undoubtedly have some dark moments, it really is mostly just cute girls doing cute things. But these girls stand strong no matter what obstacles they may face, and friendship is everything of course.
report Recommended by Protaku
Group of four girls struggling against near-impossible odds, with equal parts cute moments and feels.
report Recommended by thereIwasnt
Both focus on a small group of girls in a school club together overlooked by a teacher that visits them often, nearly identical styles of humor, and very similar traits between characters from both. However, while the overall theme of K-On is very light hearted the whole time, Gakkou Gurashi touches on heavier subjects.
report Recommended by ViviKitty
It's the same kind of story - zombies everywhere & schoolgirls trapped on the roof of their beloved school. Either wait for eventual attack or die from starvation. So they have to escape and live in this dangerous world. Apart from the identical theme we have the whole TV series instead of the short OVA. I recommend it wholeheartedly if you like that kind of reality - harshness of everyday survival and exploration of post apocalyptic world.
report Recommended by ux
Both series have the same Mystery and Horror theme which deceives every viewers. Most importantly, they have the same impact when it comes to plot revelations.
report Recommended by NameLess_NEET
Both contains moe girls and dark story. Both take school as their genre. The difference is gakkou gurashi is horror anime, while haifuri is military anime.
report Recommended by BlueHeaven_ID
Surprise? Maybe not. Talk about being dark. Yes, Qualidea Code is a ride to the darkness. The setting for Gakkougurashi is similar. What you see might not be what it really is. In both Gakkougurashi and Qualidea Code, the kids are fighting against enemies in a destroyed world.
report Recommended by Dscry
Both anime has a happy exterior and dark interior.
report Recommended by TheRockzSG
Both share a very similar plot twist involving the main character that gets hinted on since the very first episode if you pay attention. (But the way the twist is handled is very different, with World Dai Star going a more supernatural route). Both are also slice of life-ish anime with an all-female cast, but the overall tone of each show is different.

If you want an anime in which the opening doesn't line up with the actual tone of the show, then these anime are for you! Trust me, it's not as wholesome as the opening might want you to think it will be. Both anime delve into deeper subjects of reality in a what-if scenario, one questioning if it is really fair to judge people by their actions when that action is only done because it's a do-or-die scenario, and the other tapping into using happy delusions to cope with the harsh reality that one lives in. Both anime really hit hard near their last few  read more

Both are above average moe comedy shows. Gakkougurashi! is definitely darker, but this difference should not deter you if you enjoyed the moe comedy aspect of the shows.
report Recommended by TMoane
Both of these shows just take a totally unexpected turn at the end of their first episode. Even though it becomes a completely different show than you were watching for most of the first episode, it's definitely worth it to keep watching.

Both are CDGCT Slice of life with a suspenseful horror elements added to it where the world had suddenly went dystopia due to a mysterious disaster/ event. One is post apocalyptic, while the other is about zombies. Though occasionally cross between

Gakkougurashi and kotetsujou no kabaneri are both great anime about groups of people who are fighting to protect each other and themselves in order to survive in a world where sh*t has hit the fan full on zombie apocalypse style. Thanks for reading, -Tooru25.

The story plot where it involves girls in some isolated place, where they must survived if they're to get by on a day to day basis.

Both animes talks about a school and a tragedy, also, they are made by the same studio, they have samiliar vibes, and both are great!
report Recommended by biachinin
They are both quite cheerful at first, but as the story progresses the story becomes sadder. There is also a pink haired loli in both of them.
report Recommended by Patata_Otaku
Moe pink-haired protagonist starts off the series by doing slice of life stuff with her friends. And then thevanime rips away it's cute girl cover and becomes edgy and dark. There are still glimpses of the cute premise, intermixed with sadness. Both have rather dramatic OSTs as well. If you liked that about one of these anime, you'll be happy with the second.
report Recommended by Zonecommander26
Both anime share the notion of lolis living in a rather depressive state/world and finding comfort between them. They both, also, have plot twist (though Gakkougurashi has plenty more) and an interesting story taht goes beyong what's shown on the anime.
report Recommended by cecito
Both of these anime have to do with characters skewed perceptions of their reality, and how those perceptions play into their lives. Chaos;Head focuses more on the concepts of paranoia and hysteria, while Gakkougurashi explores the vast field of psychological disorders. Both contain characters that may not actually exist.
report Recommended by cmanjakaa
-Both starts cute but turns scary -Almost all the characters in both are girls -Similar psychological thriller -Both have %90 child characters -Both girls in the anime are trying to survive -School theme

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live a communal life inside a Japanese high school? Well, you're in luck - School Live and Danganronpa both offer takes on that very scenario. (Note: Though this recommendation is technically for the Danganronpa anime, I recommend playing the game instead if you can!)

Both are zombie anime
report Recommended by Azuki_rice
Both anime are about an all girls cast (plus their animal sidekick) of high schoolers in a school club doing cute things with a survival element. They are also both 12 episode anime released in the mid 2010's.
report Recommended by CxttonCandyyy
Both of these school-themed animes are twisted in their own ways. However, the similarity is that while in the start, they both seem innocent, after a while (School Days takes a bit longer) it all starts to go downhill and you see the dark, hidden meaning. If you like cute mixed with horror, these two are for you.
report Recommended by Neko_Netti
The story of both is lovely and is funny at times. School-live wants to bring hope and happiness to Yuki to protect her whereas in HOTD: DOTD the whole characters all have their own quirks that make them who they are. Both of these have similar areas as well such as survival, zombie, friendship, and family. Both stories, all the characters have to “grow” in their own ways to overcome the apocalypse.
report Recommended by Flame24685
The characters in these series are exceptional. Every one of them is introduced appropriately in the most engaging manner. Having their own and separate character arcs while at the same time building up its plot and reason. In case you're searching for a character-driven story that can likewise keep up its plot-driven viewpoints, then these shows are for you.
report Recommended by Solaris-----
Both shows have both slice-of-life and darker aspects - while Gakkougurashi shows its dark side pretty quickly, Uta Kata takes time to ramp up, but finally comes to a level you could call similiar. Both feature a childish main character with an unnatural hair colour as well as (at least) 1 more mature protagonist. School themes are present in both anime.
report Recommended by d34ct1v4t3d
-Both anime are about young people fighting for their lives in a hellish atmosphere -Both are seemingly lighthearted at first (though NGE is less so) but it turns darker and more traumatizing towards the end -Both are about survival, the difference is that Gakkou Gurashi is more on zombies while NGE is more on mecha -Both have a bit of religious symbolism
report Recommended by Markdoka
-Both have cute character designs, but the plot and the themes are heavy and on the darker side -The difference is that Wixoss is more on card games (and a bit of magical girl) while GG! is all about survival against zombies in a school.
report Recommended by Markdoka
- Both anime have zombies. Well, this is the basic similar thing that they have in common. Gakkougurashi is so much better than Zombie-Loan, in the other hand, if you're some fã of blood and dead people, you should watch the second too. Zombie-Loan has worse art but have some romance, but don't needed a computer to made every zombie walk the same way!
report Recommended by claracristiane
- The two main characters are equal! In fact, the two main characters are very similar, both are similar in design and in the stupids attitudes and they can't do anything alone. Although Gakkougurashi be an apocalyptic world and have zombies, the character gets along very well on it, so it appears to have psychological problems and continues to live in the normal world in hers mind. However, the anime can be fun too. In Yuru Yuri, we have a lot of fun and funny, and that makes us laugh a lot!
report Recommended by claracristiane
Both woman as the key characters are unable to accept reality, so they are deceiving themselves thus creating their own version of "reality". These two anime are also horror-themed and set in a school.

Same 3 school girls in a post-apocalyptic setting.
report Recommended by misterferrari
Cute girls doing cute things in a world full of zombies/ghosts. In both cases the protagonists are often on the verge of breaking down, even though gakkougurashi is more serious about that, while mieruko-chan turns it into a joke.
report Recommended by StudentMAGe
Cute girls with dark themes. Jut by the first ep of Akiba Meido I got same vibes.
report Recommended by LilPrinceein
Some arcs in Monogatari Second Seasons have similar premise with Gakkou Gurashi, especially in a certain two arcs (Kabukimonogatari and Otorimonogatari). One arc have post-apocalyptic setting where the MC is left in a world surrounded by some kind of zombies, and the latter arc have a character having delusion because she can't accept the harsh reality. Both elements are the main theme in Gakkou Gurashi. Other than the similar character designs, the OP song animation of both shows will have some changes, so its better to watch the opening too.

SOME VAGUE SPOILERS Both involve a "weak" protagonist who heavily relies on friends (Yuki on other members of School-Live Club and Riki on the Little Busters) and has a traumatic past they have trouble dealing with. Both follow the growth of the protagonist as they are forced to become able to cope with tragedy and hardship. Both involve the protagonist finally stepping up and becoming an equal member in their group (thanks to Animenz's blog post for pointing this out) Both series have peaceful/happy slice-of-life/comedy that serve in harsh contrast to the ensuing disaster. Both series deal with sacrifice, impermanence, and the will to keep going despite  read more

This is not a slice of life anime. This is not a 'happy, pretty fairy, cute little kids' type of anime. Sure, the character(s) may, but the story? - No. NO NO NO NO NO!!!! It is definitely, one of the greatest plot twists / things you'd NEVER expect to happen, type of anime. Both start off as 'cute little kids playing having fun'. But when you get into the episodes...oh no, will you be surprised.

Both shows are really adorable, "cute girls doing cute things" type of show. Both share a very very similar artstyle. Both shows have a nearly identical main character. However, Gakkougurashi isn't entirely "adorable," it gets rather dark at times.

Both are series that deal with a unique post-apocalyptic setting Life after death, and the meaning of living are explored in similar ways; along with other themes. The 'slice of life' aesthetic is present in both Both heroines are plucky, happy go lucky, high-energy girls Both give the illusion of being something they're not

Both are shows about the endurance of friendship and features of ordinary life in the midst of forces beyond the characters' understanding
report Recommended by AndouJuraiP
Want to watch a show about coming to terms with loss, especially loss of a dear friend? This is what both AnoHana and Gakkougurashi are largely about, and they both succeed in making the viewer cry waterfalls in the process. The slice-of-life feel is handled differently in the shows; AnoHana is about more realistic relationships and drama, while Gakkougurashi goes to both extremes with comedic scenes and horror/suspense. Without giving away too many spoilers, it can be said that both series also have melancholic yet emotionally satisfying endings.

Both anime are slice-of-life with creepy/horror aspects Both anime have cute girls with that happy-go-lucky attitude as the main character. Furthermore, they bring positivity in an unforgiving environment, their kindness spreads to other characters. I really think you should watch both of these shows!
