Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)

In a world similar to the European Middle Ages, the feared yet revered Holy Knights of Britannia use immensely powerful magic to protect the region of Britannia and its kingdoms. However, a small subset of the Knights supposedly betrayed their homeland and turned their blades against their comrades in an attempt to overthrow the ruler of Liones. They were defeated by the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that these legendary knights, called the "Seven Deadly Sins," were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights themselves staged a coup d’état, and thus became the new, tyrannical rulers of the Kingdom of Liones.

Based on the best-selling manga series of the same name, Nanatsu no Taizai follows the adventures of Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, and her search for the Seven Deadly Sins. With their help, she endeavors to not only take back her kingdom from the Holy Knights, but to also seek justice in an unjust world.

What, you thought that generic Not Sword Art Online clones and trash OreImo clones are all that A-1 Pictures is capable of? Well, fair enough, that's a reasonable assumption. Alas, as it turns out, they're also capable of producing shounen epics. To be fair, A-1 Pictures has already produced a shounen epic, namely Fairy Tail, but that seems to be roundly condemned as the worst that the shounen genre has to offer. I disagree, but regardless, it's not exactly the A-1's crown jewel.

Nevertheless, The Seven Deadly Sins' reception is much more positive. The Seven Deadly Sins, My Hero Academia, and Black Clover were considered to ... be the new Big 3. That is until Black Clover's anime adaptation turned out to be the cataclysmic disaster that it was, but that's a conversation for another time. My point is that it's an adaptation of a hugely popular manga.

The Seven Deadly Sins' main appeal is the fact that in stark contrast to most post-Fist of the North Star shounen series, which are almost exclusively underdog stories, T7DS is an overdog story. The Seven Deadly Sins are a legendary group of impossibly powerful knights who were framed for an atrocity 10 years ago. Now it is up to them to save the kingdom that once rejected and persecuted them and prove their innocence. In terms of power level, with the exception of the final villain of the first season, the Sins dwarf every other character in the show. Every single scene where one of them looks to be in trouble gets subverted by them instantly turning the tables and showing themselves to have been in control of the situation from the very beginning. It is not until the second season that the show presents some antagonists that can give the Sins a run for their money.

This will either make or break the show for you. Personally, I don't find it bothersome. However, it is a problem for the show's longevity. If you're sick of seeing Naruto get his dumb ass kicked and humiliated for the 9534390946th time, if you just want something different, then T7DS is the show for you. Alas, this show, as it is currently instantiated, will never be a successful long-running epic. The shpiel with the Sins always being better, stronger, faster than everyone will eventually get old, and the show gives no indication of intending to switch its tone. Note that my opinion is based solely on what I've seen in the anime's two seasons. I have not read the manga.

The Sins never seem to get stronger, or more accurately said, they never need to get stronger. They're already godlike in terms of power. If they're ever outmatched, it always seems to be a matter of some external circumstance making them present themselves as weaker than they actually are, a debuff if you will, e.g. them not having their magic weapons (Sacred Treasures), a portion of their power having been stolen and sealed, having lost their memories, having some kind of emotional trauma preventing them from going all out, etc., so it's rarely an issue of them moving forward, but rather them going back to their prime – getting back in shape, if you will. The understanding is generally that if they were to manifest their true power, they would have no equal.

And then there's Escanor, but he's in a category all of his own.

The power levels of the characters seem to be grossly inconsistent, as well. You will often see characters struggle in situations where you feel like they shouldn't and win in situations where you feel like they shouldn't. What I'm trying to say is that this show is very structurally flawed.

The characters are not the most well developed or original, either. T7DS tries desperately to be One Piece. A happy-go-lucky protagonist who doesn't seem to be preoccupied by anything, but is ready to throw down at any time, a ragtag group of misfits traveling together and having adventures, but it misses out on some of the crucial aspects that make One Piece so compelling. Luffy's happy-go-lucky attitude is not an act he uses to mask his trauma, because he's secretly this super edgy godlike demon character. Luffy's attitude is genuine and consistent, which is what makes him so lovable.

However, more importantly, there is no real sense of camaraderie among the Sins. One of One Piece's main selling points, if not the main selling point, is the camaraderie of the Straw Hats and how palpably strong their bonds with each other are. This is almost completely missing in T7DS. The only individual with whom any of them share any kind of bond to speak of is their leader, Meliodas, and even that is tenuous in some cases. It's essentially the story of seven really strong individuals who are together for no particular reason other than their more or less compelling relationship with their leader.

The biggest red flag I got was the fact that in season 2, a numerical system for representing power levels gets introduced. Think Dragon Ball Z scouters and you’ll have the right idea. Shounen power escalation has become a controversial subject. I, for one, don’t mind the scope of the escalation in and of itself, just as long it can be visually understood. I want to be able to see it with my own eyes that this guy is stronger than the other guy. I don’t want some side character to exposit that information to me. I want to be shown, not told. As such, when a show so blatantly confesses itself incapable of visually communicating power levels, that it has to resort to arithmetic... it breaks my heart.

However, all of this is an argument against the story's longevity. For as long as the anime currently is (again, I cannot speak for the manga), it is extremely entertaining and fun to watch, so much so that I watched the show twice.

Another huge selling point of the show is that the OST is composed by none other than Hiroyuki Sawano. The show features some absolutely spectacular soundtracks that I just can't get enough of, and if for no other reason, it is worth watching for that alone. Have fun!

P.S.: I should mention, however, that one of the adult male characters has a rather disconcerting relationship with a loli. To be sure, you're given the "she's actually hundreds of years old fairy" excuse, but that doesn't make it any less creepy. I had actually managed to erase it from memory, that is until a friend reminded me of it after writing this. Consider this a trigger warning, if you will.

What starts as what could be a pretty interesting premise quickly descends into a cliche ridden show with little originality,

Plot - 2/10
Very basic plot thats been seen a million times before riddled with every cliche from both shonen and medieval stories. Alot of things build up with little or underwhelming payoffs or happen extremely suddenly with little build up.

There's also a plot of one of the characters falling in love with a 3000 year old fairy who just so happens to look like a child so yeah....

Characters - 3/10
The only characters that really have any depth are king and ban, Diane to an extent ...

This is one of those animes that 12 year olds and angsty teenagers will love for all the action, shock and awe, and ethically questionable shameless fanservice. But if you are even a normally functioning, semi decent human being, you'd be embarrassed at yourself for ever watching and liking this as you grow older.
