Space☆Dandy (Space Dandy)

Dandy is a groovy, pompadour-wearing man who explores the stars in search of strange aliens for money, desiring to visit his favorite place: BooBies, the best diner in all the cosmos. Traversing the galaxies in his trusty ship, the Aloha Oe, Dandy is accompanied by his two equally unique friends: QT, the vacuum cleaner robot; and Meow, an alien with a cat-like appearance.

Although exciting, Dandy's job is never simple, and each new day promises a completely different, thrilling adventure. Together, Dandy and his crew get dragged into perilous journeys, misadventures in romance, and out of this world scenarios—all whilst steering clear of the evil scientist, Dr. Gel of the Gogol Empire.

Background

Space☆Dandy reunites a number of lead production staff members from Cowboy Bebop, including producer Masahiko Minami and director Shinichiro Watanabe. Its production involved as many as 70 animation creators and 20 musical artists as collaborators, with Watanabe insisting that artists could only use pre-1984 musical styles. Although character designer Yoshiyuki Itou is credited as an animation director, his designs were not standardized across the series, allowing for individual animators to express their style.

The series was licensed in North America by Funimation. Due to licensing issues, their initial simulcast used the instrumental track Cosmic Adventure by jazz band Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro as the opening song. Viva Namida was used from the 8th episode onwards.

Space Dandy was funnier then any of the American crap shows that plague mainstream TV. The show itself doesn't have a direct story line that ties in too each episode. Usually I'm not a fan of this, but given what this show is about, it fits the show perfectly. The story is truly unique and the made up alien races are very creative in form of imagination. Mixed Feelings

Cowboy Bebop is an undisputed masterpiece, probably one of the most acclaimed anime series ever. Space Dandy is a parody on that masterpiece made by no other than the director/writer and producer of Cowboy Bebop. In addition, the parody engrosses all other space, mecha, superhero, and tokusatsu sci-fi since Atomboy.

So I absolutely cannot recommend this thing if you are a novice in anime, even if you already watched everything listed above. If, like myself, you're watching anime for a good quarter of a century and know not only the anime but also much of what anime of the recent 50 years roots in, meaning ...

Space Dandy has phenomenal animation and art with some decent sound effects but with its non continuity based nature it makes it incredibly difficult to care about what happens each episode. There is only one that comes to mind where I genuinely enjoyed watching it being Episode 5. This being the main protagonist Dandy capturing a young orphan alien girl under the pretense of delivering her to the alien registration center.
