It's similar with saving Earth along with mechas..
Both of these anime are about humaniti fighting against some alien force to survive and also awesome space battles.Age and Simon are somewhat similar too and heroic age's story reminded me a lot to tengen toppa gurren lagann.
I feel like both of these anime have a fast pace plot line and have an epic feel to them. I loved both of them and I feel like if you liked gurren lagann you will definetly like all the action and epic story line of heroic age

Although set in different times, both are action packed and have very similar "monster" design (sorry don't know how to put it any other way)
The story and plot.. is a little the same. Also how the characters have a bond with each other.
Only difference is the theme..
While Utawarerumono is more middle aged.. and a little SF..
Is Heroic Age more Mecha/Future and more SF =P.
Also in my personal opinion.. Heroic Age was a little better though :)

both animes set in space and have a storyline that involves trying to find a planet in the universe. Toward the Terra - trying to find earth, while Heoric Age - trying to find ...............
Both set in space with plenty of space battles. They are set around a "race" seeking recognition of their existence in the universe. Both revolve around themes of xenophobia, acceptance, existence and return to the homeland.

Both are adventure stories, with an equal share of action and romance aswell. They also both weave elements of ancient mythology into their settings and stories. The main female characters are also similar, both possesing mental powers above others. Mecha are both portrayed in a more original way, than what you would normally see.
both have mecca but if your looking for a little more drama and romance with action and a lotta fighting then escaflowne is a must see. The art in esca is wonderful even though it is a bit old. watch it...it will not dissapoint!

From studio Xebec, the makers of Fafner.
Both by the same studio and feature an opening theme by Angela. Both are shows featuring a combination of mechas and creatures. Both are on the losing end of a war with futuristic technology. Fafner is the more serious of the two with a much sadder storyline although you can emphathise with Age more in Heroic Age.

Both have human race near extinction and depending on one hero with hidden ability
Power is the theme, If you are looking for an anime where the protagonist is able to beat anyone, anywhere, anytime, then these anime definetly both meet the criteria

Swarms of bugs, mecha, powers. Both have great graphics

Both involve human's battle for survival vs. space monsters. (although the humans in HA don't battle exclusively with space monsters) In both series, the key to victory lies in the hands of a super being/robot. Both feature battles on an epic scale. however, Heroic Age is a more action driven anime, where Top wo Nerae is more of a character driven drama.

First of all is - both animes have some mecha in the story ... the main character is a boy , who is under protection of a princess ... The main character have unique powers and because of them he is chased

Both have a similar style and a a decent story underneath all the action. Aquarion you have a love story along with trying to save humanity. Heroic age is also a good series where the characters are trying to save the human race, all while trying to understand the main character.
I highly recommend both....

Good story line, mecha suits and perfect graphics!!

They are very similar but not in a way you'd expect at first. The more obvious comparison is that both are sci-fi and upbeat.

Transforming through bio suits and stuff dies.

|
Pretty much same kind of plot with a political war going to between humans and advanced humans.
|
|
|
Both are mecha series, and they also take place in a futuristic type setting. I suggest you watch both!
