SynopsisEver met the perfect girl? Did she have the perfect boyfriend? Feel like you can't compete? Why not build your own? When an amateur mad scientist attempts to build a robotic duplicate of this dream girl, Marie is the result. Of course, there are the usual unexpected complications. He built her so well that Marie has a mind of her own and a whole host of questions to go with it. The same questions that each of us ask of life. Where did I come from? Why am I here? Why do I look just like that girl over there?! Well, perhaps we don’t all have to worry about that, but Marie does!

Whaaaat? only one review? This was one of the first Animes i watched back on good-old VHS. I haven't seen this in ten years and i still remember it like i saw it yesterday. Basically the story is as typical and perverted as they come: a nerdy guy has a crush on the school goddess. Knowing that he will never win 'Marie's' heart he decides to make, yes make, his perfect girl instead! Oh how wonderful.
[ Story - 6 ]
Okay, so the story is a little boy's wet dream: a guy makes his 'perfect girl' and she is perfect in every way...except in reality. When his 'perfect girl' wakes up he must give her a name and a back story. Like, come on, she didn't just appear out of no where. So when she attends school, yes his school, how else can he explain who this girl is and that she looks exactly like the school's queen: Marie! How else you ask? - you're gonna love this - by saying she's his sister!
So of course telling your shiny new toy that it's your sister can stick a wedge faster between you than any incest block. So how does the robot react? like a sister! Now Hiroshi is fighting against his creation's love. He made Marie for the purpose of having the perfect girl and instead got the perfect sister.
Like i said, the story is all the ingredients to a ecchi breakfast, even Hiroshi buying her 'panties' was an adventure, but if you look past that there is a cute little story there. Hiroshi loves his creation and not only because it looks like his high school crush but also because after time he likes having a sister more than a girlfriend and starts to realise how important having a sister can be. But of course walking along the boardline line of incest the story must take a 180° at some point to get the romance back on track. As episode three rolls on 'Marie' starts to realise what her role is really about and who she really is......aaaaaand then it ends!
Okay, so the three OVAs are short and the story must continue on in the manga, which i never read, but as far as the OVA's go it was just the beginning to their story - which left me disappointed with no ending *sigh*
[ Art - 6 ]
For 1996 the art was pretty good. I couldn't watch it now and say the same thing though. Not with todays technology, with 3D graphics and computer colouring and all, but for 1996 it was appealing. Soft colours and art. Typical really but nothing special.
OH, I do remember that they had big ears though?? haha
[ Sound - 6 ]
I never know what to say about sounds *shrugs* it was good.
[ Character - 6 ]
So the characters were a little 2D - yes i realise my pun! Hiroshi was your stereotypical loser: not many, if any, friends. Gets picked on. Talks too much. Gets himself into situations by lying. No girlfriend and still a virgin. Although, he was smart enough to make a robot that looks like a human?? o__O Marie was also your typical 'good girl'. Soft speaking, innocent, beautiful, justice of peace, goodie goodie - i would say a character that has been written so many times before but considering this came out in 1996 she could have been the first of many.
The characters were enjoyable but annoying. Predictable but interesting. Different but in the end the same as all the other ecchi/sister filled animes. Lets just say that 'characters' is not the strong point of this anime and leave it at that.
[ Enjoyment - 7 ]
I'm not too sure why i liked this so much. The sole reason might have been because this was one of my first animes and at the time i wasn't aware of the market for Japan cartoons and only knew about this one...at first. So i have a nostalgic attachment to it. That alone should make you steer clear of this. Because me being biased might be the down fall of my opinion.
But lets not let that ruin my review. In the end it had comedy, romance, drama, mild action, ecchi and, above all, it was just fun to watch!
[ Overall - 7 ]
By now you've probably worked out that this series is pretty lame and doesn't have anything real to offer and i have to agree with you. If you're planning on watching this DO NOT expect much, actually don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed. Easy.
But, at the same time, don't write this off completely. Yes, it's lame and the plot is driven to deliver ecchi filled scenes, and yes, it's only three OVA's long with no ending but it will make you laugh - while cringing - and 'yes' it will put a silly smile on your face.
If you're into classic animes then you gotta give this ago. It's only three episodes and i personally think it'd be a laugh to try and explain why it's on your Anime List - just tell em i recommended you but i didn't know what i was talking about! ;)
Thanks for reading my review. Feedback is appreciated ♥
My Dear Marie is a fairly old anime series with little in the way of story or artistic value. It's very average. BUT the english dub is pretty frickin funny. If you like old anime and you're in for some laughs, check this out.
They share lots of similar riles even though Marie is less child-like and mindless than Chi. But if you liked Chobits you might like My Dear Marie, both feature guys with robot girlfriends in ecchi situations!
