Both are sci-fi shows about humans living on a soon to be dead planet Earth trying to fend off alien attacks. They are from the same era and feature a similar vibe all around, as well as similar animation. Tekkaman has more of a focus on action.

Old school space anime from the 70's. In both series it's about two parties being at war, with both series having a machine as a symbol of hope in ending the war. A mobile suit called Gundam, and a reborn battleship from the WW II, modified into a space battleship, Yamato.
