I thought this to be a beautiful yaoi in my own personal opinion. I was completely engrossed with the character Gilbert and I would love to read the manga if I could find it. The story was very interesting - hence my wanting to read the manga - and I love the time period it's set in. I've read plenty of novels set during the same time though usually in other parts of the world. Certain aspects remind me of a few of those novels in particular. It is a bit melodramatic but if you can watch a soap opera without screaming in agony you should be fine. I thought the romance was beautiful and even the art for it's time. The relationship between Serge and Gilbert was the most interesting to me - especially on Serge's side. I can't really put into words why I liked this one so much. It has to be Gilbert but then I think - no it's Serge. So I can't quite place it. However, if you like sad things, melodrama, nostalgic feelings or tragic characters you'll probably like this anime. read more

Traduzido como “A Canção do Vento e das Árvores”, é um típico anime “shonen-ai” (relação entre rapazes), levado às telas em 1989 e cuja história se baseia em um clássico escrito por Takemiya Keiko. Retrata de forma dramática e trágica a vida de um jovem que teve seu coração partido e, por esta razão, está quase enlouquecendo.
Na cidade de Provence, França do século XIX, o anime conta em “flashback” a história de Serge Batouille, agora quase adulto, retornando à sua antiga escola. Ele é filho único de um nobre casado com uma cigana mas que, devido aos infortúnios da guerra, acabou morrendo jovem e deixando-os sozinhos. Serge, passeando pela escola, relembra de todos os locais por onde passou, as situações que viveu até chegar à porta de seu antigo quarto, onde apenas ouve-se um doce sussurro de sua voz ecoar antes do início da história.

Ambos dividiram o mesmo quarto, mas na sua primeira noite na escola, quando Serge chega a seu quarto, Gilbert não esta lá e acaba recolhendo-se mesmo sem saber quem é seu companheiro de quarto. No meio da noite, ele é acordado por um belo jovem de olhos claros e rosto formosamente afeminado... Gilbert.
Serge é um jovem incrivelmente talentoso e bonito, inteligente, excelente em esportes (principalmente hipismo) e toca piano como poucos, pois além de possuir um talento inato, fôra ensinado desde muito jovem por seu pai, que durante a juventude estudou nesta mesma escola.
Gilbert é um jovem que fôra abandonado pelos pais e criado pelo tio, um homem muito rico que financia a escola, chamado August Beau. Ele não demonstra muita emoção, a não ser quando esta perto de August, que o domina sadicamente e, graças à sua influencia, faz com que as ações de Gilbert sejam toleradas e encobertas.
Pra quem já esta querendo subir pelas paredes de ódio, não faça!! Este anime foi feito para poucos. “The Song of Wind and Trees” é cheio de motivos, razões... e acima de tudo ...cheio de amor... nada feio ou apelativo mas, sim, carinhoso e insinuante. As cenas não aparecem fortes, elas são planejadas, cada uma dentro do contexto. Cada personagem com seus dramas e suas alegrias, a vida de dois jovens e os que conviveram com eles, como um relato em imagens de como foi a juventude.
Tecnicamente, posso dizer que, para um anime produzido em 89, ele está em plena forma, pois a animação é sem pretensões nem efeitos mirabolantes. Os cenários trabalhados e belos da antiga França, retratando suas construções e trajes de época, são um deleite para os olhos. A parte sonora é um verdadeiro “show”, posso citar como exemplo a corrida desesperada de Gilbert pelos campos de Provence após ler uma carta, cena que é maravilhosamente embalada pela doce melodia de Chopin para piano chamada de “Elude”.
Seu enredo é diferente, nada apelativo, onde tudo tem um propósito, e justamente por isso pode não agradar a todos, pois o excesso de elaboração tornou a história lenta. Mas tenham paciência e assistam até o final. Vale a pena em muitos aspectos. Não fechem os olhos, pois estarão perdendo um belo e romântico anime.

Both are about a kind of homosexual realtionships, and both are set in somewhere in Europe, in the XIX century, or similar.... In general, the aesthetics is similar.

While the main theme of these two series is considerably different they both take place in Pre-Industrial France and cover their respective time periods with some historical accuracy. In both there is the theme of social injustice and the scars it leaves on people. There is plenty of drama in these series and the artwork invokes an old school ambience that is very similar. Furthermore, both deal with forbidden loves; Rose of Versailles deals with class differences while Song deals with the growing romantic attachment between two boys. These are bittersweet anime through and through. RoV focuses both on political aspects as well as individual conflicts with plenty of history, and Song deals almost exclusively with the tortuous relationship between the two main characters in a very slow paced and poignant manner.
