Synopsis

Striking fear into the hearts of mortals, the Demon Lord Satan begins to conquer the land of Ente Isla with his vast demon armies. However, while embarking on this brutal quest to take over the continent, his efforts are foiled by the hero Emilia, forcing Satan to make his swift retreat through a dimensional portal only to land in the human world. Along with his loyal general Alsiel, the demon finds himself stranded in modern-day Tokyo and vows to return and complete his subjugation of Ente Isla—that is, if they can find a way back!

Powerless in a world without magic, Satan assumes the guise of a human named Sadao Maou and begins working at MgRonald's—a local fast-food restaurant—to make ends meet. He soon realizes that his goal of conquering Ente Isla is just not enough as he grows determined to climb the corporate ladder and become the ruler of Earth, one satisfied customer at a time!

Whether it's part-time work, household chores, or simply trying to pay the rent on time, Hataraku Maou-sama! presents a hilarious view of the most mundane aspects of everyday life, all through the eyes of a hapless demon lord.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, or Working Demon King! for those who are adamant about proper title translation, is a fun fantasy comedy anime where the main character is, as you can easily guess, the Demon King. Let's look at this this way: How often does fictional media portray dark and demonic characters to actually be the good guys? The answer... somewhat rarely. I say that since as of this review, there are some other anime with protagonists who are affiliated with darkness popping up in recent years.

The story starts in a fantasy world at a country known as Ente Isla, which is a chain ... of five islands shaped like a cross. The center island is inhabited by the Demon King Satan and his minions while the four surrounding islands are homes to humans. One day, Satan sent his minions to invade the four human settlements seeking to rule the whole country. As his armies came close to victory, a heroine (Seriously, why isn't the proper word for female hero used?) named Emilia Justina appeared and defeated three of Satan's four generals, saving the four islands. The last remaining demon general, Alciel, retreated to Satan's castle to assist his master when Emilia and her allies arrive to defeat the Demon King once and for all. Satan and Alciel were no match for the heroine, so they escaped opening and entering a gate to another world vowing to come back to take over Ente Isla again one day.

On the other side of the gate is modern day Japan on Earth, and because Earth lacks magic and magic is believed to not exist, not only are Satan and Alciel unable to use their powers, they also now have human bodies. Their only choice now is to assimilate with the human society in Japan until they can find a way to restore their magic and return home. Satan, now named Sadao Maou, works as an employee at the fast food chain MgRonald's while Alciel, now named Shiro Ashiya, takes care of housework in their apartment. During their time living in Japan, they encountered Emilia, who goes by the name Emi Yusa. Emi came to Japan to finish off the demons, but is in disbelief to see her enemies living peacefully. Plus, she can't use her sacred powers anyways. Well, she does have enough magic to take them out, but in doing so, she can't return home. Until Emi can secure a way back, she will leave the demons alone. Later on, mercenaries from Ente Isla arrive in search for Sadao and Emi. They seek to kill both of them, not caring for any bystanders and witnesses.

The artstyle fits the series so well and ten years later, I say it still holds up. That is how excellent the studio White Fox is. For those of you who are watching my profile grow, I know I already praised them a lot on my previous anime review on Steins;Gate. Honestly, I find the animation quality to be top-notch, especially when expressing the characters' emotions. I sure hope White Fox sticks around for subsequent seasons... right? Right?

When it comes to the music, I have to say the best soundtrack is the ending song Moon Flower. There is just something about that song that feels very soothing to listen to every time. As for the opening song Zero!!, it's a great opening theme. Honestly, I think these music selections work perfectly for what this anime is. The opening pumps you up making you feel ready to get into the next episode while the ending closes each episode off with a calm tune because at the end of the day, the Demon King cares about the people he's close to. Speaking of people being close to, characters.

During Sadao, Shiro, and Emi's time living in Japan, they get close to a high school girl named Chiho Sasaki. Chiho is Sadao's co-worker at MgRonald's and during their work together, she developes romantic feelings for Sadao, and still accepts him for who he is even after learning about his true identity. While Chiho has faith in Sadao, she also gets along with Emi very well, even though the latter is set on being the one to defeat Sadao one day. Emi doesn't really mind the idea of having a golden opportunity to finish the job, but she does not agree with the mercenaries' methods as they involve terrorizing and hurting the people of Japan, including Chiho. Basically, the demons and the heroine have common enemies to deal with while keeping their friend safe.

There is one thing that bothers me. Ente Isla has its own language, a fact that's established right at the beginning of the anime. It shows the characters speaking in the language until they move to Japan where they start to communicate in Japanese. In the fourth episode, we see Emi's past where she used to live a wholesome life with her father before being summoned by the Church to be trained to fight the demons. During this segment, the characters are speaking in Japanese, not the language of Ente Isla despite the clear established fact that people from Ente Isla do not understand Japanese. This flashback issue not only happens once... but twice. You might think this is just a nitpick, but I argue that if you're going to establish a language for a fantasy world, you must remain consistent with it throughout the series.

For the most part, I had a good time watching The Devil Is a Part-Timer! It has an interesting premise, an eye appealing artstyle, a decent sountrack, and fun character interactions. I will repeat, the biggest flaw with this anime is not keeping consistent with speech in Ente Isla. It may be no masterpiece, but it's still an amazing show in its own right. For that, I give this anime a 9/10.

Now will you all excuse me, I'm going to search for a Japanese restaurant that has khatsu-dum.

Mixed Feelings

This is probably very individual to me, but I just wasn't a huge fan. It was funny for sure, and a lot of the characters are very charismatic, such as Alciel and Lucifer, and they along with Satan have some of the most enjoyable slice of life scenes I've seen.

However, the slice of life aspect being on the backburner is what hurt the show most. When I saw this was a reverse isekai I was excited to see how the devil and his followers would adapt to modern Japanese living. Instead they are completely settled by the second episodes and the show becomes more about ...

this show can be best described as a series of tryhard comedic reliefs played back to back with plot threads spurn in between. 'try hard' because they're repetitive to the point where you're obliged to feel lightened by them. there are so many plot points that just don't add up, & the characters constantly disregard the very motive they exist to achieve the *entire* time!

another thing about the story is it turns in different ways 'just because' (like- the fights end before they can actually begin, and buildups lead up to nothing... and that's another thing- we learn nothing about anything since the first episodes ...
