Detective Conan Movie 09: Strategy Above the Depths

Another DC movie without at least one review? Might as well...

The story plot for this movie was quite enjoyable. It's been ages since I've seen this, but I have a pretty good idea of how things went. Everything flowed nice and smoothly and not much just happened for no reason. The mystery is more of a howdunnit where alibis and stuff come into play, so it's definitely a break from some of the other movie plots where the focus is on the identity of the culprit. The way the culprit is revealed is also a bit different, so be sure to keep your eyes open for that. Once again, there's the damsel (Ran) in distress, which shouldn't be much of a surprise. However, the final action/suspense moment at the very end was executed wonderfully in my opinion. It really was quite a heart pounding moment right there. Overall, only because I've seen better, I'd give the plot an 7/10.

Art, once again, 7/10. Not much to complain about here. St. Aphrodite, the cruise ship, was drawn amazingly in this movie, much better than the 747 in the previous movie. I wish that could be enough to raise it to an 8, but not quite. Still, a solid 7/10 nonetheless.

Now for the soundtrack. I can't say the OST was the best or the worse. it has been a long time, but I can't recall anything special. The Kimi Ga Ireba remix they always have was just average in this movie. I only gave it a 9 instead of an 8 because of the ending theme. ZARD (bless her soul) has once again delivered an amazing song to use as this movie's opening. Though everyone is subject to their own opinions, I still absolutely love this song and even today can't get enough of it. Though every movie end theme is great, there have only been a few that I never get tired listening to, this being one of them. A nice solid 9, most definitely.

There wasn't a huge cast of characters in this movie, nor was there a huge cast of suspects. But I felt like what they provided was enough to suffice. None of the characters seems to be too flat, but neither of them really emotionally connected with me either. Still, not bad, so a 6/10.

I personally really enjoyed this movie, maybe even more so than the eighth one. It definitely wasn't the best that has ever been rolled down the production line, but it's right up there with the best of the best. For both enjoyment and overall score, an 7. read more
