New Sailor Moon anime commemorating the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon.

Usagi Tsukino is a second-year middle school girl who is a little clumsy and a crybaby, but she is full of energy. One day, she meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, and she transforms into Sailor Moon, a sailor-uniformed pretty guardian of love and justice! As a chosen guardian of justice, Usagi seems to have a mission to find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other guardians and to protect the princess.

Meanwhile, the queen of the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl, also sends minions to the town where Usagi lives to obtain the Illusionary Silver Crystal, which has immense power. This causes strange events to unfold...

Can Sailor Moon really find the Illusionary Silver Crystal with the other Sailor guardians, and protect the princess...?!

I just don't know. I wanted to love this. I spent two years hyped for Crystal, ecstatic when it was announced and terrified it wouldn't actually happen every time it got pushed back. After all the excitement and the biblical-proportioned flood of 20th anniversary merchandise, I'm left feeling a little bitter. What went wrong here? Well... kind of everything. Like, pretty much everything.

Let's address the biggest, pinkest elephant in the room from the start: the artwork. I'm not interested in arguing about the style, just the quality. I think what happened here was an ambitious idea (trying to mimic Naoko Takeuchi's elaborate manga style in read more

My two cents includes nothing that hasn't been said already, at least to my knowledge.

Crystal was super hyped but failed to live up to it. While I enjoy the faster pace of the series and the fact that they generally abandoned the Youma of the Day model, the animation is increasingly hard to ignore. The magic-oriented sequences make the Senshi look as if they're made of rubber, and the overt CGI in the transformations make me think of early Pixar rather than something we'd use in 2015.

My lukewarm reception to this series is truly a heartbreak for me, as Sailor Moon was my gateway to read more

I've given up on Sailor Moon Crystal. As a former avid Sailor Moon fan I made it to episode 17 of this series before just completely giving up. It is downright terrible. The art is ugly and everything is so static it reminds me of a low budget flash animation cartoon. Storywise the pacing is dreadful and you'd think that was because there was too much to fit into this condensed manga-esque chapter structure.. but no, 75% of an episode is Usagi crying or dramatic name shouting.

The characters seem braindead. For dramatic purposes in storytelling you often have to have the characters miss a read more

"It's like we had a very long dream. A dream that felt like riding on a roller-coaster."
Usagi Tsukino, Episode 26, Sailor Moon Crystal

Now I truly understand why people take such a strong stance against remakes of classic anythings unless it is done near-perfectly.

Let us break this down.

Story: 6/10
Sailor Moon Crystal covers two major arcs, arc one dealing with the Dark Kingdom and the various minions it has. This arc lasts about 13.5 episodes. Arc two deals with the Black Moon Clan and a few of it's minions also, and lasts about 12.5 episodes. Arc one also deals with a blossoming romance between the read more

Anime: Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE!
The two of these are very similar in terms of genre, plot and quality, but Binan Koukou is almost like a parody--it's very good for those with Sailor Moon nostalgia, or those who have fun laughing at typical magical girl tropes.
In short, it's almost like a mix of Sailor Moon Crystal and Free!, and not to be taken seriously at all. Good downtime watch material.

Anime: Tokyo Mew Mew
Very similar in the aspect that both contain magical girls trying to save the world. Also similar as both have a romantic aspect thrown into the mix.. teenage high school girls thrown into a situation they at first don't want to be in/ are afraid of.

Anime: Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
Both are good magical girl stories where school girls transform into magical beings to fight the forces of evil and save the world. Where Sailor Moon is the classic magical girl series, Madoka Magica takes a different new approach. Both of these series are worth watching if you haven't already seen them.

Anime: Go! Princess Precure
Both are animated by Toei, Princess Precure's animation is 100x better though. Both are colourful magical girl series with little filler (for a Precure season). Both heavily include princess elements. Transformations, villains, monsters and story.

Anime: Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
1. They have very similar characters, especially the main character, both are childish and good.
2. Both are about magical girls.
3. The romance is plenty of important in these two.
4. The friendship is too significant.
reportRecommended by Wintertime
Anime: Princess Tutu
Both are magical girl series involving transformations. Both Sailor Moon and Princess Tutu use love and justice to conquer their enemies, although instead of using violence Princess Tutu battles through dance. Both shows contain strong themes of friendship, and the main characters in both have a love interest. Both are suitable for younger audiences but still can be enjoyed by older anime fans.
