Synopsis

"Magnetic Rose" is about what happens when a deep space corporate freighter is called upon to investigate a distress signal from what ought to be a derelict space station. The space station is run by the deranged AI imprint of a lovelorn, jaded opera diva, who controls the station's functions, including its life support systems and (to more dramatic effect) its VR holography and supporting nanotechnical systems.

Of all three short films within "Memories", Magnetic Rose is generally considered to be the best, with fans often praising its emotional potency and skillful direction. Directed by Morimoto Koji. Script by noted anime director Kon Satoshi, based on a story by Otomo Katsuhiro.

Probably the most underrated anime piece of all time.

Magnetic Rose really shows how far animation can go in terms of direction and perfect pacing. Some of this was probably the inspiration to much of Cowboy Bebop, redefined space sci-fi anime by allowing music to take a much larger role in the story telling. There is some nice CGI that doesn't distract from the film.

STORY/CHARACTER
The story, which I heard was co-written by Satoshi Kon, is very memorable and well-plotted. It's obvious that much work has gone into perfectly balancing the scenes and using them wisely to help develop the characters in such a short time.

Memories Magnetic Rose is about a lone astronaut, who finds himself in an astro-relic.

Whats unique about this piece is how many levels of mystery it contains, the and nostalgia it employs, while being essentially a sci-fi piece. The movie does well to captivate its audience similarly to live action classics like 2001, using the space itself as a theme as well as further developing the theme of imperfect technology, by exploring the idea of the mortality/obsolescence of technology.

This is a RIVETING and PROVOCATIVE piece. A must see for anyone who calls themselves a love of sci-fi, and a necessary primer for all cyber-punk appreciators read more

Recommendations

Two absolutely stunning sci-fi vignettes. Not to be missed by serious fans of science fiction.
It felt like a story from Cowboy Bebop. They share the same melancholic atmosphere and the cold, lonely space setting echoing only with the sound of music by Yoko Kanno.
