The slice-of-life battle story is set in a future that has neither World War III nor an alien invasion—just an ordinary future set after our current age. In this world, robots are part of everyday life, and they contribute in various aspects of society. "Shinki" are 15-centimeter-tall (about 6-inch-tall) cute partners made to assist humans. Equipped with intelligence and emotions, they devote themselves to serving their "Masters."

These Shinki can even be equipped with weapons and armor to fight each other. Such Shinki are named "Busou Shinki" (literally, "armed divine princesses"). In particular, the Shinki Ann (Arnval), Aines (Altines), and Lene (Altlene) serve a high school freshman named Masato. Things change when a new Shinki, the bellicose Strarf, joins them.

This is not at all what I was expecting after watching the ONA. It is more in the vein of shows like Hidamari Sketch, Working!, and Acchi Kocchi. (Renkin San-kyuu Magical? Pokaan also comes to mind). It is an enjoyable slice of life with comedy elements. I found the climax (for which, suddenly, everything ends in fiery explosions despite the utter lack of precedent within the show) to be the most predictable and least enjoyable part.

I'm glad it is not what I expected. After the ONA I thought, "If they made a full length series for this it read more

So reading the tags of this anime (action, sci-fi) you may think (like i did): "Cool! Custom cute robots fighting!"; well that was true, but not the only truth. Most of the anime will lack a TRUE background plot and the fighting scenes are not...really the top...
Let me explain in the deep:

Plot - 5 (i am being good here)
Basically it's a slice of life anime without a defined plot. After the first episode you could see the ep 6, then the 2 and you will notice NOTHING. The only exception to this are some minor arcs of two episodes but that's all; you can see read more

- Animated by 8bit, a minor studio that has produced nothing but passable ecchi shows.
- Directed by Kikuchi Yasuhito, who has made several anime of several genres, none of which are particularly good.
- Based on a toyline by Konami, meaning this is just a toy advertisement show.

One of the first anime I watched as a kid was Plauress Sanchiro, which featured a boy controlling a small fighter robot and taking on other contestants in tournaments. It was fun, with very original and interesting concepts for its time, plus it looked well animated. Many years later several other similar shows tried read more

This anime has the feel of Busou Shinki all the way, with similar mecha designs and really good quality animations. They both involve fighting and stuff like that.
Both series involved living doll-jointed figures that go on adventures inside and around the house and protect their masters by contract. Rozen Maiden's heroines are living dolls created by magic while Busou Shinki's heroines are living figurines brought about through created by technology.

The series are about personal computers and/or personal robots who help take care of ones every day life and happen to be the in thing, not to mention a part of the daily life around everyone. The main robot character(s) happen to live with a young man who is living on his own too.
Both slice-of-life
About female students/teenagers who have weapons that serve and/or protect them. Can, and are used to fight one another. In Mai-Hime, the weapons are called "Childs" and in Busuo Shinki, the weapons are called "Shinki"
Both called Princess. Hime is in both tittles meaning princess. (In the second half of the kanji word for shinki)
With different background main story is about a close group of girls and their daily activities. Daily chores, helping each other, sometimes arguing. Always with a happy ending. Warm, happy feeling emanating from both. One slice of life school comedy. The other one mecha slice of life comedy.
Upotte is Busou Shinki on steroids. Both anime features characters that are Humanoid but not Human, and, both anime have the characters to serve and fight.
