Both are slow paced, conspiracy themed and well grounded Mecha anime that raises question about war and one's role in it.

Both have similar components - a meaningful and endearing journey coupled with a climactic and philosophically important ending. Charming art-styles, great VAs, and the whole nine yards of production quality are met as well.

Same realistic take on a hard military job, this time through they eyes of a photographer instead of a rescue team member. A slice of life war drama this time quite similar. ^^

Both have highly realistic portrayals of military operations, as well as the inclusion of mecha in them. Each also contain events set in a war-torn middle east country with international involvement. Both anime are created and directed by Ryousuke Takahashi

Both are female-led mecha series that heavily feature political and military drama, realistically grounded machines, and a gripping atmosphere.

Both of these shows take a comparatively realistic approach to depicting warfare, and focus to an extent on the human and psychological cost of it.

The two anime do share a critical and fairly realistic look at military personnel, tactics and the geopolitics behind it all. There is no mecha in Zipang and, thanks to a glitch in the space-time continuum, it takes place at a critical point in WWII rather than the present. If you enjoy thoughtful anime, and military themes, I recommend both Flag and Zipang.

Both are excellent examples of the shaky-cam done right in anime, although I felt that Memory was much more refined.
