Mutta's life has hit rock bottom. He's been fired, blackballed from his profession and now he's had to move back in with his parents. Meanwhile, his kid brother Hibito has been literally riding a rocket and training to be an astronaut. The same career Mutta once dreamed of. So, is it ever too late to go after your dreams? Through a little coercing and a bit of covert activity, Mutta's family and friends can get his resume on the right desk, but from that point on it will be up to Mutta himself. Does he have what it takes to turn his life around and put his footprint on the moon? The first step on the highway to the stars is always the hardest, and in a job where crash and burn isn't just a euphemism, it will be the biggest risk Mutta's ever taken. But with the best support team ever, maybe he'll find what he needs to rekindle the spark inside him and light the biggest candle of them all!

At first glance Space Brothers seems to be an anime about two brothers that just go space and do astronaut things, but oh ho, dear reader, it is so much more than that. It is a realistic journey delving into one of the most difficult professions ever conceived by man. Now that the series has concluded [for the time being], a proper review is in order. But first, we better shake hands.

Space Brothers cleverly depicts the pursuits of Mutta and Hibito, converging their storylines at some times and following them separately at others. This structure is beneficial to the flow and progression, and earns read more

"An older brother must step ahead against his younger brother" - Nanba Mutta.

Lately, i haven't found any good anime to watch.. then i meet Uchuu Kyoudai/Space Brother, at the first i was like oh just an average anime which have sci-fi and bla bla bla. since i didnt have any anime to watch, i thought i could try it for just one episode. and then seems like i had learned my lesson.

"Dont ever judge anime by its cover, genre, or anything else before you watched it" - Me, after watching this.

The story was simple, its about Nanba Mutta as the older brother who had promised read more

This anime is a hidden masterpiece. It has appeared several times ranking fairly high (always within 70-40 range) on anime websites but with fairly low views. I have always managed to simply ignore it because of its length and seemingly mundane type of setting. During the summer vacation, I unearthed this anime from my long watching list. My reaction was 'Meh, why not?' When I watched the first episode I was completely enticed.

Yes, you will not find aliens or fantasy. You will not find crazy sci-fi twists to this anime. But you will find a passionate story of two brothers aiming to work as read more

With this review, I am hoping to attract attention to the highly underrated anime that is Space Brothers, or I should say, Uchū Kyōdai. I can confidently rate this anime an easy 10/10. In the following paragraphs, I will go into detail and explain why.

Uchū Kyōdai is a Seinen, Slice of Life. That being said, it is almost suitable for all ages. In the beginning, the story itself is not so much original, but it is how the events play out with a wonderfully charming cast of characters, that makes this anime unique. I have a huge interest for astronomy, and I obviously love read more

Both of them are about people setting goals and trying to achieve them. They are great and make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. You will find nothing like this on american tv.
Featuring the journey to space, Planetes and Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Brothers) have distinct realism in their perspective stories. The characters are also relatable with genuine sense of humor and inspiration to make their dream into a reality. The stories of both series indeed also have great development along with its characters. I recommend both series for anyone interested in an insightful and well crafted story with credible characters.
The general vibe of a protagonist trying to navigate his life seems similar. The level of humour seems similar, too.
Both of these shows are different in genres, but have quite unique story.. not your typical school comedy. Both of them have main characters (Kotetsu and Mutta) with easygoing personalities who often get in troublesome, funny situations and are kinda unlucky (to not mention they are both voiced by the same voice actor, so no matter how you look at it they give the same feeling), but their partner/brother (Barnaby and Hibito) are successful in what they do.
Both series will make you feel warm and relaxed after watching them. They also have good, calm music and focus on two main characters that bring out the best in each other.
