Movies adapted from Shounen anime almost all tend to revolve around a few things:
1: A few new characters, one of which has a plot device power/item, all of which will never be seen again.
2: The main characters befriending them quickly to get the audience to care about them.
3: A place or event with some hidden power that the plot device character is needed for.

After seeing this be the case time and time again with movies for shounen anime such as Pokemon, DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, and Bleach, I got my hopes up about this one, thinking it'd be different because I read more

I was expecting something more action-packed and thrilling, but this was by no means a disappointment. This movie was perfectly fine. Just a-okay. It's a lovely chocolate cake smeared with some questionable cream and devoid of the cherry on top. And when you haven't had a cake for a while, it's a bit of an 'oh-well' sort of downer. But if you've had your fair share of sweets- from revolting, stiff wedding cakes to drool-worthy masterpieces- you will find this cake to be an ordinary dish, its expiration date a bit too soon, but far off enough to leave you munching in contentment.

Most Anime movies involve the usual characters fighting against a new threat. This one is very unique.

The anime is an action packed adventure, where Rin, Satan's son, fights against demons as an exorcist. The movie is almost completely different. While it starts with some action, it quickly turns into a more emotional movie. True Cross Academy is in the middle of holding a festival, meanwhile Rin, Yukio and Shiemi are busy exorcising a demon train. During the exorcise, something goes wrong and a small demon named Usamaro is released. The exorcists decide to deal with Usamaro after the end of the festival, and he is read more

Note: This review assumes that you have at least some insight or knowledge with the original TV series or the manga.

So what would you do if you discovered that you were born as the child of Satan? Well for starters, you probably would view your life a bit different than the way it was before. For a particular kid named Rin Okumura, his life is never the same again. Then, enters even more troubles with the demons themselves. Well, who you going to call to exterminate these demons? An exorcist of course! Otherwise, welcome to the world of Blue Exorcist. Only this time, it's adapted read more

Recommendations

Both movie's have great Fantasy, supernatural, and action elements.
Similar strong MC's that also have hidden potential that later on awakens.
Both involve a special organization that fights to protect the human raise.
The two movies have amazing art work not to mention a awesome soundtrack that makes every scene that more exciting.
On the Pokemon Movie , Entei makes the little girls' wishes come true.

On the Ao no Exorcist Movie, Usamaro eats people's bad memories to make them happy.

It isn't exactly the same thing but I hope that you get where I'm coming from.
In Ao no Exorcist, they have a Devil as a friend ... in Madoka Magica, they have a Witch as a friend
The premise for both movies are the same. Our main character meets a mysterious person while on a mission. Somehow they have a special connection to them. Beautiful scenery details, music, and animation.
