Both anime take place in a fantasy world and have a somewhat similar art style and sense of humour. The characters travel the world while fighting some bad guys that are after them and sometimes get involved in some crazy situations.
Both shows have the same feeling, are fantasy animes, both are funny, but still have a serious plot. Both shows involve sword fights (Maze has less however), their settings are similiar, and even the artwork looks alike. The screenwriter for Slayers directed and wrote Maze... Must I go on?

Kurogane no Linebarrels has a lot of quirky characters and randy humor; beware the boobies in this anime! The Machinas are also semi-organic mecha. Likewise, Maze: Bakunetsu Jikuu is an anime also full of demi-armor (mecha that bonds to their pilots internally), a zany cast, and sexual innuendo. In both anime, the fight scenes are only riveting because the characters are so endearing and fun to watch!

Typical boring fantasy with lot of 'gender based' fan-service (in Mao - BL, in Maze - GL). Sometimes funny but mainly - stupid and irritating . You need to 'switch off' your brain completely for watching this series.

Escaflowne and Maze are both adventure stories of troubled girls being whisked away through space and time to magical realms where the only hope for survival is a giant robot-like creature of legend.
