Five years ago, while battling an alien force known as the "Mimesis," Dannar pilot Goh Saruwatari first met Anna Aoi. Today, on the day of their wedding, the ceremony is interrupted when the Mimesis strike again. As Goh struggles in his battle against the alien threat, Anna stumbles upon a top secret robot known as the "Neo-Okusaer" and uses it as a last-resort to save her fiancee. At that moment, Dannar and Neo-Okusaer merge to become the mighty robot "Godannar."

This is a review of Season One of Godannar. My problem with the current reviews on the site of Godannar is they seem to be taking it way too seriously. It's an homage to older Super Robot anime and should be seen as such, not compared storywise to something like Spirited Away or what have you. It's like comparing G Gundam to Zeta Gundam and assuming it has a horrible storyline because it doesn't take itself seriously instead of seeing each show on their own merits.

Story: 6/10 - The story isn't heavy, especially in this first season. Your average super robot read more

I will be reviewing season one of Godannar, if you check out my review of season two, you will notice it to be about 90% the same as this one. While both series are separated into two halves, they share the same overall story as a whole.

Story: 4/10
And speaking of which, there really isn’t too much of one to speak of! Basically the whole series revolves around these creatures called "Mimesis" that seem to be attacking earth for some unknown reason, and its up to a select group of mecha style fighters (most of which contain exaggerated busty women) to save the earth from this read more

The anime has a very bad storyline, you might even miss it if you don't pay A LOT of attention. The characters lack a background and introduction, it's like they were just placed there. Also, the way some characters conduct themselves seems irrational and unreasonable, and might get to your nerves, eventually. The mecha designing isn't bad, but their attacks and actions are too monotonous.

A poorly-written, very-ordinary romantic story. It at least has a good art and animation.

Watch it if you have a lot of free time or nothing more important to do.

This review is for the entire series.

If you like anime with no real story and girls with big cleavage, this is for you.
Godannar is unoriginal and nothing new. First the plot could have been very good had they taken the anime more seriously. Instead the creators turned it into another romantic comedy, with giant robots, and girls with large cleavage. Don't get me wrong I like looking at girls with large cleavage, but at least give me a decent story and some good action. I can get large cleavage from a hentai or porn. Again to the story which had no urgency, and made me read more

Anime: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
A Super Robot series with fanservice? No denying that.

But there's a compelling story beneath the fanservice and mecha action.

Anime: Super Robot Taisen OG: The Inspector
Both are on the extremes of Super-Robot testosterone-inducing ridiculousness.

Anime: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Both have main characters who are immature girls that go through hardships adapting to the life of being a powerful mech pilot.

Anime: Mazinkaiser
There's a famous pic lying around on 4chan /m/ that makes the connection between godannar and mazinkaizer.

also, tatsuya shares the same voice actor with kouji in Mazinkaiser.

both also contain hot blooded songs by Ichiro Mizuki and some really good fanservice.

I can't help to think that Godannar was very much inspired by nagai's 70s mecha series. i may be wrong, but that's the general gist i get from watching it.

Mecha, girls, action, drama, and comedy, what else could you ask for more? Both of these series contain plenty of action and even fan-service. Both series also has romance that are explored in the story and there are emotional drama as episodes progresses. Great series for mecha fans.

Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Both have a Hero/Heroin who wants to save the world using giant robots controlled by their own hands
