What can I say about Mazinkaiser? I am a huge mecha fan and I thought i would enjoy this for the pure fact that it is Mazinger. Mazinkaiser was pretty boring in the aspect that it was generic Super robot. Nothing excited me besides a couple of episdoes. It did nothing for the genre or bring anything new to the table. Just your typical Monster of the Week.
The characters is what you expect from classic super robots. The good guy who wants to do the right thing all the time even risking his life, the comic relief characters who try to break tension in between serious moments, the heroine, the Villain who wants nothing but to take over the world and his minions who fail all the time no matter what. Kouji is what you expect from the good guy always saving the day from evil, he never really develops as much as that probably considering the original Mazinger Z series. Sayaka suffers from the same fact that she doesn't develop as much, she is stubborn when it comes to misunderstandings with Kouji even though she likes him, she for most of the time gets in trouble with the bad guy and gets caught. She has her own mecha too called Venus A and it helps out once in a while when kouji is in trouble. Boss by far my favorite character seizes to amaze me. He is basically the comic relief and isn't meant to be taken seriously, he always gets hurt and gets his robot destroyed constantly through the OVAs. He only hangs around Kouji because of Sayaka and fights with them for so. His robot Boss Borot is probably the weakest out of the 3 robots used in the series only for the pure fact of comic relief, even then it can still hold its own against Dr.Hell's robots as seen in the 7 OVA which shows how brave he can be when he is the last resort. Dr.Hell does nothing in the villain department that you can think "subtle" he is a very obvious villain with his evil island, organ playing and lighting. All he wants to to destroy the Photon labs, Mazinkaiser and get his revenge on Kouji because of his grandfather. His minion Baron Ashura is what you expect from a minion. Loyal, not cunning, evil and constantly loses to Kouj. I like to see Baron as Team rocket in the aspect that they only want to destroy Kaiser for Dr.Hell and thinks of new ways in trying to destroy it but fail every time. He virtually never develops at all and is a uninteresting character in this incarnation at that. Other characters like Tetsuya, Prof. yumi and Jun were just there to be there, the fact they are there is for the fans. Tetsuya helps Kouji in a few episodes but really doesn't amount to much but get beaten and Great Mazinger damaged, only in the last episode does he really help out in the end.
The sound was magnificent, Music by jam project like "Fire wars" "Theme of Mazinkaiser" and "Tornado" which is sung by Ichirou Mizuki along with jam project and others that i enjoyed when they played like "Fellow" which was a epic piece that played a part of fire wars just made it great. It was fitting in this and made the experience a little more interesting. The art I must say was great for how old it was. It was your typical Go Nagai art style combining a cartoon art style and anime. They all looked like they did in 1972 making look nostalgic for the classic Mazinger fans. The mecha designs haven't Changed a bit. Mazinger Z still looks like itself besides the white pilder, Great Maziner as well. Kaiser by far is a awesome update to the Maziger style robots, Big, Bad, and Awesome. To me its Combing the likes of Z and Great together. The story is typical Monster of the week. Normal day everyone relaxing, Cut to Baron plotting against the Photon labs then they release the monster, Fight, and Kouji wins. The only exception to this is episode 1 and 7 when it was more about Kaiser over coming then monster fighting.
Overall the story is nothing new, generic and sort of boring. I would only recommend this if you are a huge mecha fan, a Mazinger Fan or Monster of the week fan. Don't get me wrong i thought this OVA was ok but it wasn't "Shin Getter". The music is great, Art as well. Characters are what you expect and enjoyment is ragging from boring to "Ok that was cool". This is your typical Super robot show, give it a watch if you want. read more

Mazinkaiser is based on one of the first super robot shows, Go Nagai's Mazinger Z. I'd heard a lot of good things about this seven episode OVA so I was excited to see it. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I was led to believe. Mazinkaiser is also the name of the main giant robot in this show. It was originally created for the Super Robot Wars video games and apparently the fan reaction was so good that they decided to make an OVA series based on it. It's set in the Mazinger Z universe with the same characters as Mazinger Z. The characters are pretty archetypal; there's the hero that solves everything with bravery and manly yelling, there's the silly comic relief character, there's the girl, there's the scientist guys that do maintenance on the robots, there's the evil nemesis that wants to destroy our heroes. Pretty basic, but it gets the job done. Anyway, Kabuto Kouji, the main good guy, finds Mazinkaiser, the ultimate unbeatable giant robot, and Dr. Hell decides that he must destroy Mazinkaiser because....he's the antagonist and he feels like it. The problem with the show is that there doesn't seem to be any overarching plot. Each episode stands alone. The last episode was actually really cool but it isn't worth watching six average episodes to get there. The art is based on Go Nagai's original designs so it has an old-school style, which I like. The animation changes style from episode to episode. The first one is done with cels, some are done with real thick lines, and some are just done with computers. The sound is nice. All the sound effects are fitting, you can hear the robots stomp as they walk around and the laser blasts are good. And it has an awesome opening done by JAM Project. I'm more disappointed than anything else. Mazinkaiser had everything going for it, but it still turned out mediocre. read more

"Modern" OVA's of classic Super Robot anime's that define the entire genre. Getter Robo and Mazinger Z both get a "current" day anime style animation with "Real Robot" (if you are familiar with that genre) elements thrown in. Thus creating bad ass sequels to both classic Super Robot series that set the bar for everything Mecha anime.
Mazinkaiser is Nagai's creation.
Getter Robo is Isihikawa's creation.
Ishikawa is Nagai's pupil and those two were the brains behind Dynamic Pro's success in the 70s.
Both are excellent well animated ovas.

Both are modernization "alternate timelines" of souped up versions of classic Super Robots. Mazinkaiser is the more modern and beautifully rendered series while Shin Getter Robo has a grittier artwork and pacing that I prefer so even though this is a recommendation section, I would suggest not taking the similarities much to heart.
Treat this more like two similar series but one having more flash and the other having more substance. Shin has the substance, Mazinkaiser has the flash.
...but don't forget...these are still remakes/sequels of classic Super Robot series with depths that may disappoint more modern anime fans so make the flash and substance issues relative to how those classic Super Robot series were and not a general list of modern mature anime in general.
