The premise of the project is the 70% possibility that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake will occur in Tokyo in the next 30 years. The anime depicts what would happen if an 8.0 earthquake took place.

The story centers on Mirai, a middle school freshman girl who goes to Tokyo’s artificial Odaiba Island for a robot exhibition with her brother Yuuki at the start of summer vacation. A powerful tremor emanates from an ocean trench, the famed Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge crumble and fall, and the landscape of Tokyo changes in an instant. With the help of a motorcycle delivery woman named Mari who they meet on Odaiba, Mirai and Yuuki strive to head back to their Setagaya home in western Tokyo.

This anime is really bad.

I watched this anime and suffered through it's entire 11 episodes.

First of all I think some explaining is needed. I live in Chile, and I experienced three earthquakes of over 8.0 in the last 5 years. I have a niece 12 years old now, and in 2010 she was frozen solid with the 8.8 earthquake, she didn't move unless told to do so. This anime LIES about how people react to earthquakes.

Story: 3

This show follows a couple of brothers and their amazing adventure in an all-too-shaky japan. How they UNREALISTICALLY live through all the aftershocks and find out that friendship read more

She's Breaking Bit by Bit

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is something special. A human story told through naked eyes, this show did something that a lot of anime hasn't done for me lately, spark an emotional connection. It gently nudged me through the tale of a young girl named Mirai, her little brother Yuuki and a motorcycling delivery woman name Mari, as the world around them shattered into pieces.

Tokyo is crumbling; foundations are upheaved, buildings are leveled, and bridges are twisted till the tensions snap, as a magnitude 8.0 earthquake roars. Fires break out like crimson rashes, read more

Anime Review: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Story: The story, in itself is simple. It is the events of the tokyo earthquake from the perspective of 3 characters, their struggle, and what they do to survive. It is the story telling that is this anime's selling point. That is done exceptionally well.
Score: 3/4 due to lack of actual story depth.

Characters: Average characters. your average brother sister combo, with a caring passerby. the type of characters that befit the story, but nothing necessary to advance the story, or add any value.
Score: 0.5/1

Sound/Music: Proper ambient sounds and noises to add tot he environment, soft voice acting that fits the characters. read more

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is a breath of fresh air amidst all the crazy ridiculous shows filled with giant mecha, deadly monsters, hot chicks, and moe guitar plucking girls. It takes a seemingly normal life of a bratty teenager and literally shakes up her world as she confronts the very face of humanity.

Story [9]: Mirai is one of those bratty teenagers who is entering that stage of life where they just simply hate everything and anything. Being dragged to a robot exhibition by her younger brother Yuuki, in Odaiba, a catastrophic earthquake hits Tokyo and the city falls into chaos. The story follows Mirai's journey home read more

Anime: Hotaru no Haka
Both are stories that deal catastrophes and it's effects in a realistic approach. Both have siblings as the main characters whom develop a strong bond through out.

Anime: Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
Despite Ano Hana tries to keep scenes on a more happy stage, the sad moments don't ever miss a single episode to have some space.
Those two anime might result way different from eachother, but i think if you try to watch them both you'll get to understand and have the same feeling that they both will give you.
Plus both stories are very good, the art and the colors are very well cured.
Highly recommended both~

Anime: Coppelion
Both anime dealt with a section of the environment getting destroyed in some form.

Anime: Seirei no Moribito
Mari and Balsa are very similar because they are like a protective mother figure for the children in both animes.

Anime: Yomigaeru Sora: Rescue Wings
Both deal with the tragedies of natural disasters. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 from the perspectives of a group of victims, while Rescue Wings shows a rescue helicopter pilot.

Anime: Shingeki no Kyojin
The first episode of both these anime start of quietly and uneventful, then suddenly, the characters' lives get turned upside-down and calamity ensues. One caused by titans breaching the wall in Shingeki while in the other, an earthquake tears down the city.
