Tekken

I'll admit that the story may have seemed controversial to fans and I didn't get it the first time I saw it when I was a kid, but I still like this anime. I first saw it back in 2002/2003. After that, I downloaded the movie and saw it again - even now its a bit of a guilty pleasure for me whenever I watch it.

I suppose its because of the fight scenes, in how they've fleshed out the animosity between Heihachi and Kazuya, while also giving Jun Kazama the limelight as well. It has its moments, in my opinion - like the opening, for ... instance, is a moment for me. As is the final fight scene.

Overall, if you like the game, do give it a watch. it does have its share of goofy moments, but they're nostalgic.

As an anime, Tekken is passable but in a way I can appreciate: It doesn't waste your time nor overstay its welcome. You're here to see people fighting and that's exactly what it delivers as its primary focus.

Even though the story isn't anything revolutionary, I have to give this ova some credit for managing to weave a proper narrative out of the original Tekken fighting games and go the extra mile to give much of the main cast some actual characterization when it comes to establishing their personalities and motivations throughout the experience.

The art and sound range from average to pretty good in some parts. ... The characters all ring true from their videogame counterparts and some of the rock music really did elevate some of the scenes. My only disappointment here is that this anime didn't utilize some of the more unique and diverse settings where the fights would take place in the game, as the majority of it is set on some jungle island.

This anime is definitely a product of its time, and that might make or brake it for you, but I personally had fun watching this.

Super brief review here. I'd put off watching this for years based on the box art alone (dating myself here), but I did eventually sit down and give it a viewing. Produced in 1998 by Studio Deen, the Tekken OVAs arrived on the scene just prior to the PlayStaion port of the fantastic Tekken 3 game, and good lord does it disappoint. With its weak art, poor characterizations, stagnant animation, and a story only tangentially related to its source material, it's a travesty. Arguably the worst of the fighting game adaptations of the '90s, which is saying something since both the Art of Fighting and ... Samurai Showdown anime exist. Namco's 3D fighting king deserved better.
