Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Parallel Works

It's a good idea to come up with teaser trailer shorts, just a little market enquiry and must have been fun to do for the creators.

Dismissable except the 2nd (Champlooesque alternate) and 8th (Macross&Eva crossover with quality animation) ones.

Still there is no harm watching it if you liked the series. There are almost no spoilers since these are imaginary what if? trailers, you can barge in whatever point you are on the series.

Gurren Lagann Parallel Works 1 is not an easy series to describe. While it's easy to say that a good share of the episodes may be objectively or subjectively bad, this is often complicated by being wrapped in layers of symbolism or obscure messages that were unclear. Technically, everything here wouldn't really qualify as "anime", and is more along the lines of music videos. That said, with no way to actually tell apart what's really intended and what's supposed to be subverted, it gives the necessity that things be taken at face value if only for simplicity's sake.

With all that said, the series was unfortunately ... a smoldering wreck: regardless of when it took place in the overall series plot, a lot of this wasn't really subversive at all and seems to be here simply for obscurity's sake, and it almost feels like the characters were sold out just to make these. Only a very small handful of these are actually salvageable and tell (middlingly) impressive stories; the rest are devoted to nonsense such as (I kid you not): Gimi's penis swinging around, shots of a live-action desert with a figure running with no context, a vaguely historical-esque setup episode which accomplishes the uncanny valley in 2D animation somehow, and much worse. Please, save yourself the trouble and skip all of these. 1/10.

Let me just say this... Simply put.. I wanted to see what this was about.. Since I thought it was a PV like the Yoko Pieces of Stars..

It tries to be I guess? Let me tell you what.. mark me as unhelpful send me bad comments.. but this is my review.. The two videos I saw of this series were HQ on youtube 1080.. So I found good ones to view.. I wasted my time completely searching and watching these videos.

I am a fan of Gurren .. but these were just ...well its hard to even review them because they made absolutely no sense... ... I didnt understand any of it.. even the music was horrible.. The first one I saw.. the one listed on this page.. had some HORRIBLE .. rap music that sounded like someone made on a tape recorder... The second ep I saw.. was something about a pinball game? With equally as horrible sound.

I dont know if i didnt get the prereqs for watching this.. but I was completely lost .. and what I could make of it..was horrible anyways. The art was the same as the series.. so its the only thing that I scored decently.. Even the lovely Yoko was not enough to make me suffer through watching both videos in their full length.

So I guess in closing... if you watch it.. and understand it.. more power to you.. but since I am the anime noob.. and my reviews are always from that prespective.. even watching this will leave you in a state of confusion and frustration for wasting the effort.
