Synopsis

Based on a shounen manga by Yasuda Suzuhito serialised in Shounen Sirius.

Akina, Hime, Kotoha, and Ao are four members of the Hiizumi Seikatsu Soudan Jimusho (Hiizumi's Everyday-life Consultation Office), which, in addition to helping kindergarteners deal with tough times, strives to preserve the peace of their little town, Sakurashin, by hunting down the troublemakers who dare threaten it.

Hime is a superheroine. Ao can read minds. Kotoha can conjure up anything with the right word. And Akina…well, he's just a regular guy, surrounded by three supergirls! Together, they protect the town of Sakurashin. But that's not easy, as the town faces demon dogs and other supernatural threats!

Yozakura Quartet is an extremely odd show, and you'll be forgiven for scratching your head and wondering what the hell was going on come the end of the show.

The series began life as a manga by Suzuhito Yasuda that was published by Kodansha in Japan, and by Del Rey in the US. Prior to the manga, Suzuhito worked as the character designer on Kuwashima Yoshikazu's series Kamisama Kazoku, and Yozakura Quartet is his first solo work.

The anime was directed by Matsuo Kou (Kure-nai, Rozen Maiden, Red Garden, Dead Girls), and shows some of the trademarks of Matsuo's directorial skill.

There are few times when an avid anime fan goes into something expecting so much and gets so little in return. Yozakura Quartet happens to be one such example. Based on a much more highly acclaimed manga, the first episode starts off with all one could expect from a show that could deliver. Interesting, well-drawn characters centered around at least a moderately unique plotline. The music and sound quality are top notch and there are even early introductions to romance possibilities.

However, as some stories tend to do, that’s when the train leaves the tracks. Yozakura Quartet is about a group of young people (there are read more

If you like the supernatural/magical element in this series, you would like Rental Magica. It has similar characters: a group of heros with special abilities, in this case an organization, looking to ward off evil in their city. Both have a hint of comedy, darkness, and adventure. Both have very similar main characters: a seemingly normal main guy with a special ability and a strong female at his side.

Haruhi retains the supernatural aspects, centering around a group of 5 instead of 4. While the show's plotines and such differ, the main supernatural aspect of abnormal beings with powers, working to defend either a town, or in Haruhi's case, the earth.

Both series also contain a good deal of off-and-on comedy.

Plus, Hime's personality sometimes reminds me of Haruhi's.
