SynopsisHyperactive Excel does anything and everything to try to please her lord, Ilpalazzo, who wants to take over the planet. Excel's misadventures takes her and her partner, the ever-dying Hyatt, all over the world, meeting several strange people as they go. Everything is bizarre and goofy, as any kind of anime or entertainment genre gets mocked and spoofed. (Source: ANN) |

This show is one of the definitions of random. I will say right now, if you demand structure or linear plot lines, turn back now.
Excel Saga actually not only tells the story of Excel and her escapades, but it is actually three different story lines going at once.
We have the tale of Excel, Pedro, and The Neighbors that work for the city.
With that said, the story is not easily reviewable but here goes.
Well to tell the truth, there really is no story (aside from trying to take over the city) until the last few episodes when random twists of fate bring all three story lines together (dont worry that didn't ruin anything)
Each episode of Excel saga is meant to be a parody of different genre, for instance, there is a sci-fi episode, a fantasy episode, a "power rangers/sailor moon" type one, etc etc. Throughout the course of these episodes, stranger and stranger things start happening and its always entertaining, sometimes funny, sometimes WTF.
The episodes that dont so much focus on Excel have no plot either, and are more of the "daily life" type anime episodes.
As for the art, the animation is top notch. Everything is well colored, choreographed, and presented. They make use of a wide array of animation styles for the various episodes and characters which is a plus.
The sound......i dont even know. This is one of the reasons you love it or hate it. Excel talks extremely fast about the most random things and she can get to be very annoying, or very entertaining. And you may think that "oh she can't talk like this the whole time" but you are wrong, almost the entire time she is running that jaw of hers. Dub or sub, she sounds the same, i dont have a recommendation, pick whichever you normally watch.
Aside from the vocal tracks, the music is quite entertaining. The character themes and sound effects play a big role to help emphasize scenes and actions.
As for enjoyment, I personally found the show very entertaining although at times i did want excel to just STFU but it was worth it in the end to watch it. Dont watch this for any kind of epic plot because you will be disappointed, but if you want highly entertaining, high energy and comical times, check this show out. read more

It's kinda like Inuyasha or Naruto in the sense that you will either love or hate Excel Saga. Instead of ninjas and demons, it is insane humor and parodies of every type of anime stereotype. This is anime at its funniest.
Story: Plot? Hmm...maybe. Though the first 20 or so episodes don't seem to have any at all, there is enough to tie it together. Excel and Hyatt try to take over the world with Lord Illpalazzo. I like how the good guys are like the bad guys. Episode 21-25 ties up the rest with a plot, and 26...well, you'll just have to find out yourself. It goes too far in a way.
One thing to note. Episodes 14-16 seems like they over-used old humor from earlier. I actually think they were ment to do that, to prove how desperate the directors were. (Not real directors. They are characters as well)
Animation: For its time, I liked the animation. This is my first review, and i'm not an expert on animation. It was smooth and it flowed nicely with Excel's crazy antics.
Sound: It has a very catchy opening theme song that only just got out of my head. The ending theme song is alright, it's just Menchi begging not to be eaten really. The music is generally catchy and matches the situation greatly. Everyone's voices ( I watched this show in English) are quite good, except Excel drags on and on. And on.
Character: Probably what i liked the best about the show. All the characters are crazy, but they all differ and i love them all. They develop their personality's well. Especially Watanabe. He's like me exactly. Without the whole I'm in love with an ACROSS member.
Enjoyment: I enjoyed most of the episodes. Some of them were pointless really, but overall I never stopped laughing. This isn't an anime for everyone, but for the parody lovers and for the ones that like a bit of insanity, Excel Saga is perfect. read more

this is the follow-up project by director shinichi watanabe. only shared character is nabeshin but the style (extreme parody of japanese culture and slapstick humor) is the same.
Same studio, same director, same madcap insanity. Puni Puni Poemy is essentially Excel Saga compressed into two episodes.
Because the same people are behind both Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy, they share the same spirit of random over the top comedy. Anime conventions are targeted in both series, with ES parodying a gamut of genres while PPP focuses mainly on mocking fanservice. Anyone who enjoyed one of these series is bound to enjoy the other.
Both anime are directed by the GDW -- Great Director Watanabe! If you liked one, then there's no reason not to see the other, but watch Excel Saga first because Puni Puni Poemi takes place after.
Both animes have their WTF moments....which makes both equally enjoyable. Puni Puni Poemi is just a short spin-off of Excel Saga with a different main character and more comical goodness that made Excel Saga a hit.
Nabeshin exists in both of these worlds and it's crazy as Excel Saga but in compact form.
It's by the same anime creators and some of the voice actresses overlap. They're both hyper and wacky.

If you could handle Excel Saga's insanity, then i'm sure you can handle Furi Kuri's. It's shorter, faster, and it has a yellow vespa!
If Excel Saga was short, had a confused boy, and had philosophical undertones (or any plot at all) it would be Furi Kuri.
Both are just plain mindrapes, and practically dont have any plots in them. Combines loveable characters and super absurd & random slapstick comedy. If breaking the fourth wall sounds nice, then try this.
Excel Saga and FLCL are similar in that they are both extremely random and fast-paced anime with a plot structure that is all over the place more often than not. Zany and wacky to the extreme, these are series that poke fun at virtually everything - with a special focus on pop culture and anime in particular. Both are parodies that mock themselves as well as several genres, FLCL mostly concerned with mecha and ES covering a gamut of genres from horror to romantic comedy. In both there is an endless quantity of references to other anime and manga, and the level of hyper insanity that makes FLCL a stunning visual fest is preserved in ES' energetic craziness.
If you like animes without heavy meaning, and "I don't know what's going on, but it's so funny", those are for you. Don't miss Excel Saga DVD bonus episode!
Very strange and funny thing with many references to other anime
