Hyperactive Excel does anything and everything to try to please her lord, Il Palazzo, who wants to take over the planet. Excel's misadventures takes her and her partner, the ever-dying Hyatt, all over the world, meeting several strange people as they go. Everything is bizarre and goofy, as any kind of anime or entertainment genre gets mocked and spoofed.

Excel Saga is more like EVERYONE IS ON DRUGS SAGA!
This anime is 90`s version of Gintama because most jokes are hit and less miss to me.
It`s like making fun of common anime cliches and to deconstruct it.
All these moments and randomness are blended done right.

Plot is not that good but every single episode is just stand alone episodic fun, the episodic formula is using the same formula as Gintama but Excel Saga came out before Gintama.

If you expect the story to be serious then you`ll be disappointed, just watch it for the randomness fun, over the top fun roller coaster ride, and crazyness.

You`ll see tons read more

Do you want an anime even more random and completely nihilistic than FLCL, or even Haruhi Suzumiya? Try Excel Saga! It is 15 years old and still probably the crown champion of random insanity. The last episode was so off the rails it couldn't even be aired on TV!

Story and characters: 6/10

The "plot" or lack thereof consists of an inept terrorist organization called ACROSS attempting to take over a single Japanese city and eventually the world! The organization ACROSS is led by the maniacal Il Palazzo (note the manga came out in 1995, the year after FF6 and its villian named Kefka Palazzo) who casually read more

Every genre of anime has to start somewhere. For example, the Real Robot genre would not exist if it was not for the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and most "Manly" anime would be completely different were it not for Fist of the North Star. And random comedy/parody anime would not be what it currently is without Excel Saga.

Story: 10/10
The reason I give the story such a high score isn't because of the overall plot - it's because of the episodes. Each episode of the show (With exception of the clip shows, as well as the last episode, which was made to purposely read more

This show is one of the definitions of random. I will say right now, if you demand structure or linear plot lines, turn back now.

Excel Saga actually not only tells the story of Excel and her escapades, but it is actually three different story lines going at once.

We have the tale of Excel, Pedro, and The Neighbors that work for the city.
With that said, the story is not easily reviewable but here goes.

Well to tell the truth, there really is no story (aside from trying to take over the city) until the last few episodes when random twists of fate bring all three story read more

Anime: FLCL
If you could handle Excel Saga's insanity, then i'm sure you can handle Furi Kuri's. It's shorter, faster, and it has a yellow vespa!

Anime: Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan
Whacky comedy in which a hyper female lead brings constant chaos to each and every frame: the description fits Excel Saga as well as Bokusatsu Tenshi. Both are very colourful, loud productions in which characters die and are brought back to life, repeatedly, even. The humour in both relies on shoutouts to other anime and popular culture in general and they have the same feeling of plot-less over the top fun aimed at a more mature audience.

Anime: Gintama
Gintama is also full of reference type humour and is pure crack on crack on crack. It continuously makes fun of any and all anime titles so the more anime you watch the better it gets. I've been watching it over and over again ever since it started airing and I STILL haven't gotten sick of it, or failed to find new puns. Highly highly recommended!

Anime: Dai Mahou Touge
Besides the obvious similarity -- blonde haired, green-eyed bishes that know how to kick butt when the situation calls for it -- in both these series, cute equals deadly. Random, unearthly occurrences abound and the iconic innocent-to-serious face changes from Excel Saga, if you like pain stirred in with your cute, you can’t go wrong with Dai Mahou Touge.

Anime: Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai
similar ideas - whole series revolves around the idea of "pick a theme for the episode, then have your protagonists attempt to fit into it with hilarious consequences".

Anime: Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
If you like crazy, manic humor with no regard for the plot, then you'll love both of these shows. Both of these shows pull jokes out of no where and are both quite heavy on the slap-stick.
