Gallery Fake is a a perfect example of the seinen genre. It is sophisticated, realistic, and logical . . . and yes, it does have its light hearted moments. Each episode features a "mystery of the week" but what sets it apart and makes it so intriguing for me is an amazingly accurate look at the intricate workings of the art world. I have a deep love of Art History and this series touches on one great master in many episodes. It also explores other things that are art as well; things like antique watches, photo-journalism, and Pre-Columbian civilization and artifacts. It is very much like the live BBC series Lovejoy, a long running story about a brilliant but slightly shady antiques dealer.
It is not surprising that because the series is about art, the look of the anime itself is top notch and I love the sound track, especially the opening song. Awesome, upbeat jazz with a vintage feel.
If you are looking for something different, give this one a try.
I have to agree with the previous reviewer and give it an overall it gets a 10. read more

Possibly one of the most unique anime I have ever watched. Guarantee you will never watch any other anime quite like it. Yes there may be some that are recommended as similar but i highly doubt that they are. Basically this is the best mystery anime i have ever watched. Now yes i havnt finished it but from what i have scene so far its really good.
The story of this is quite intriguing and at sometimes hard to follow, but i think thats what makes this anime great to watch. You have to pay close attention or you will miss things. Great thing about it is that its one you will want to re-watch over to catch those scenes you missed.
The art is different, well in the sense that this whole anime is about art. But besides that its got great color and great art lines. Phenomenally done in my opinion.
The sound is great, i love the opening song it really personifies the anime. The ending im not so much hyped up on. Its good its just not my cup of tea i suppose.
The characters are fun to watch, specially the three main ones. I love how the art curator lady and The owner of Fake, I dont want to spoil anything so i cant say much about it other then the name, i love how both of them get into spats. I think its amazing how the owner of Fake Reiji his name is can pick out which are real and which are fake just by looking at it from a distance.
I highly enjoy this anime, unfortunately for it, it has been put on hold till i can find time to watch it. Another victim of my addiction to brand new anime i suppose.
Overall it gets a 10, i love this anime and i hope after reading this review you will check it out for yourself. read more

The episodic nature of both shows is the biggest similarity. In each show the main character helps a new person each episode. Each episode also teaches something. In Bartender, the viewer gets to learn a lot about the histories of different types of alcohol and different types of cocktails. In Gallery Fake, each episode teaches about an artist or a style of art. Both shows are generally laid back and calming, since each show usually concludes with a problem being solved.
Both are slow-paced, episodic, seinen anime based on manga and both have a similar feel. Protagonists are similar in that they both pay attention to minute details. Bartender is a bit more mature and serious in my opinion.
Both Bartender and Gallery Fake present information about their respective subjects (various drinks and alcohols in Bartender, and various pieces of art in Gallery Fake) while still managing to be greatly entertaining. You learn something every episode, sometimes without even realizing.

A very skilled and well educated Japanese man solves mysteries around the world. Another contemporary setting but the look and feel is a bit different. If you are looking for something more mature and thoughtful take a look at Gallery Fake.
Both series are backed with stronger reality than most average anime, and their time periods overlap at around the 1990s. Each of them is centered by an elite professional who has chances of showing off his knowledge and skills as the individual stories unfold.
