Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan (Sky Wizards Academy)

Years ago, humanity almost got wiped out by huge magical armored insects that had become too strong and aggressive to handle. Because of these giant bugs, humans do not live on the earth anymore, but in floating cities instead. However, this does not mean that everything is lost, because the wizards from prestigious floating wizard academies are fighting these monsters.

Kanata Age is a young man now labelled as a traitor even though he was once praised as the "Black Master Swordsman." He gets a chance to repair his reputation by instructing the team E601, which seems to be facing some difficulties. It consists of three girls, Misora Whitale, Lecty Eisenach, and Rico Flamel, each with problems of their own. It appears that Kanata will get in deep waters more than once because of them...

tl;dr: An anime that’s even less intense than it seems and arguably slow in some pretty important regards, but is pretty good at being pretty casual action centered around characters.

Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan, also known as Sky Wizards Academy, takes place in a world where humanity was almost wiped out by a horde of giant magical insects and only survived because they escaped to magical floating cities. These cities still are under the constant threat of destruction by the insects, but thankfully humans known as Sky Wizards have gained abilities that allow them to defend their cities.

While all of this backstory is present, it ... definitely isn’t the focus of the anime. Rather, the focus of the anime is more character focused and much more narrow. It focuses on platoon E601, a platoon that starts off widely regarded as the worst platoon in the city of Mistgun. The majority of the anime is centered around chronicling how this team comes to grow from the worst to one of the best. The team is assigned to be instructed by Kanata, a Sky Wizard that was once the ace of an S rated platoon, but had abruptly quit, resulting in him being seen as a traitor. The rest of the squad includes the hotheaded Misora, the incredibly shy Lecty, and the extreme narcissistic Rico. I suppose it is also important to mention that a former team member of Kanata named Yuri also gets just as much focus as the members of E601, especially during the second half.

While the anime is primarily focused on how E601 grows, this growth isn’t really a training arc at all in the traditional sense. There’s very little in terms of Kanata actually teaching them abilities or skills. Rather, Lecty and Rico are already pretty highly skilled, and while Misora isn’t at their level she has high enough base stats to also be pretty competent in her own right. Thus, their issues aren’t a matter of skill, but rather in personalities that don’t let them use their skills or cooperate properly. As such there’s a lot of slice of life type stuff, wherein they just do random things like work as waitresses or just hang out and talk about various things in their past.

Kanata is intended to be the wise cool type that just guides them along without them realizing how they’re being guided. The writing surrounding this is awkward at times, but as far as gary stu teacher type protagonists go he’s a pretty great character, though he doesn’t really get fleshed out at all. The rest of the main cast is pretty cliché in terms of backgrounds and personalities, but they’re still fleshed out well enough that independent of their originality they’re pretty interesting and likable characters. And while they definitely do go through some character growth as they come closer together, there are definitely hints that there’s a lot more potential to their character arcs.

From the premise it seems like the serious kind of anime with a lot of major high stake battles and such but that’s really not the case at all. The major actions portions feel like they’re mostly just there as events where character development that had been built up so far can click. So if you’re here for the action this probably won’t do much for you. There’s light world building in regards to what feels like really important things, such as the looming threat of the insects, Arata having this strange dark power which led to him quitting his S rank platoon, and this strange phenomenon where non Sky Wizards lose all memories of Sky Wizards after their deaths, but none of this is really expanded on. And furthermore, while the main cast is fleshed out a decent amount, as mentioned there’s very little development of Kanata, and everyone else only feels like they have a lot more to go through as well.

While that is pretty normal for an anime adapting a light novel series, this feels like it does less than most adaptations, which very much makes sense as it adapts only two volumes as opposed to most anime that adapt 3-4 volumes in a cour. As such, in terms of actual long terms substance, this anime definitely is paced slower than most anime. However, despite that it never felt like it was dragging on or was paced slowly while actually watching it, because it did a really good job at moment to moment pacing where it felt like it was always filling up time with amusing and enjoyable moments, even if they largely had nothing to do with the overarching plot. This is pretty normal for light hearted slice of life type anime, and while this being done for a seemingly more action focused anime with a more serious type of plot might seem strange, I feel it managed to work pretty well.

The art style and art are pretty good I felt, with pretty good designs for characters, weapons, the world, and enemies. The production values are a mixed bag. For the most part they’re pretty solid and things look perfectly fine and sometimes even great. The exception to that is the action, which is often marred by terrible CG and just in general not that great. If this was an action focused anime this would be fatal, but I don’t really think it is, so I didn’t find it that much of an issue. The soundtrack had a couple memorable tracks (“la laiya la laiya la…”) but otherwise was just okay. The OP had a pretty good song and visuals. The ED song was okay with visuals that were mostly okay as well, outside of the use of pretty bad CG.

Mixed Feelings

This is my second viewing of Sky Wizards Academy, having previously watched it years ago. The first thing you will have to get over is the art style. The picture quality is, to put it politely.. very mediocre.

The first three episodes have this weird problem with color saturation where the brightness is obnoxious. Even in best quality mode, I could not find a stream of the show where everything is clear and crisp. Perhaps the blu-ray resolved this? either way, it comes out looking like a show from the early 2000s.. which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

The truth is that very, very cliché I have already seen it a thousand times the same and with better animation. With a better group of protagonists, much more interesting and with the protagonist who is not sad. In this anime you only see trash and trash. And when you think it can't get worse, it gets worse. Don't watch this don't waste your time watching this piece of shit.
