Synopsis

Shuurei Kou and her friend Eigetsu To, a boy prodigy of humble origins, have been appointed co-governors of the Sa province, one of the eight provinces in Saiunkoku. Together, they decide to make the province an academic research center in the hopes of bringing a long overdue prosperity to the region.

However, while Shuurei goes to the capital to obtain approvals for the ambitious project, the Sa province's recently established tranquility is threatened by a pandemic that brings both death and turmoil as it begins to spread among the people. Counting on Eigetsu to monitor the situation until her return, Shuurei seeks support from her allies to find a suitable treatment. Yet, Eigetsu's past personal conflicts distract him, providing an opportunity for opponents of Shuurei's position to take advantage of the troubles and undermine her authority.

Becoming a government official has been Shuurei's lifelong dream, but it is no easy task for the first woman undertaking such a position. Will she step up and overcome this great challenge or give in to the looming adversities?

The first season is an anime of my teen years, one of the first I've ever watched and I love it so much after all those years. After rewatching it recently, I discovered there was a second season!

Throughout the first half of that season I was very excited to learn about the story, the arc with the disease is so interesting and captivating, but after that it kind of... stops feeling like Saiunkoku at times? Characters and plot points start to appeare out of nowhere and the context often doesn't elaborate much about them, it feels a bit off.
From what I know the light novels ...

I agree with the other reviews that this season was better and more eventful, however I feel like a 3rd season is necessary to explain some backstories. I feel like there were a couple loose ends that they failed to explain. For example:
-the guy from the Hyou family just suddenly decided to leave Shuurei alone doesn’t make sense
-shusui’s relation to the Hyou family
-the Hyou family in general?? (The ghost + Riou)
-the corrupt Ou Ki story
-what is Seiga’s deal tho???
I can go on forever but despite all this, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the anime! I rly liked the second season, especially certain new characters (Tan-Tan!)

[Spoiler Warning]

Second seasons are always better than the first and this is no exception. This season has three to four arcs. The longest one being the first which focuses on the character Eigetsu who was the co-governor with Shurei in the first season. His past is revealed and seems to have something to do with some medical situation in another town.

The second arc is about forgeries and counterfit coins. They are the main focus for about three episodes.

The third arc is about a demoted Shurei trying to help other people, as well as herself, find jobs while figuring out why there is sand in salt.
