Gun Frontier

(Now before I share upon my developing takes, I will need to do an introduction of how I am as a watcher. Howdy, I have a weak spot for overlooked shows/shows rated very neutrally. Though it may be a bias at times, I use this softness to see the optimistic sides of what these shows do well and pointing out some details for these shows to be brought upon without being ignored. Thanks if you've read up to here, now commencing this review..)

[Gun Frontier Review]

Like for the name itself, Gun Frontier's setting takes place around a time for when the Wild West was still at ... it's peak, before the advancement of a modern society and incoming new technology, however that won't always be the case once the story progresses. Which wouldn't be long to take notice if you're an avid watcher ;^)

As for it's story, it's a prequel.. though a separate story of a different continuity if you will, because we're given the vague introduction of 2 characters.. ones a samurai named Tochiro Oyama, and the other one was a former pirate under the name of F.Harlock. These characters are returning characters from another series, though mostly these 2 characters are in the same stories whenever they're introduced in said stories. It's all in the impression that these 2 characters have traveled a lot together, and this show already presents it well in episode 1.. moving on. The 3rd main character introduced is a female named Shinunora. This tale's exclusive character, as she joins along the trip with Tochiro and Harlock for whatever adventure awaits them. Forming a strong bond with them as we progress within the story.

The chemistry of these 3 characters are debatable, though I believe it's done very well (especially in this adaptation) The 3 often save one another from a troubling predicament, whenever it's natural survival or the threat of someone(s) presented in the episode. With Tochiro's pride & curiosity, Harlock's stoic & sternness, and Shinunora's feminine & maturity. These 3 just work as a team, even if Tochiro's the most developed of the group.

Though as you can guess, the story focuses more on the characters rather than the animation (with comedy jabs here and there). Which is a good excuse for why it's different compared to most present day better looking shows. It's not always about the story without it's characters afterall, which is what I've enjoyed most out of some of Leiji's great works. Surprisingly Gun Frontier as an exception of having a different setting than most of it's predecessors. Which is what I'm gonna discuss more about..

It's not that often that you'll find an anime taking inspiration of the wild west era, which is what I would like to see more in the future. Whenever a time like that could exist. Though for whatever western anime inspired that you may have found, Gun Frontier is still a solid choice of that genre (well in anime terms) It may be a comedy, but it still has action. It may be another Leiji story with his style of character designs but it's still an incredible attempt of taking a different inspiration rather than his space operas.. and of course, it's still a gem of early 2000s anime, midst of cell animation yet the show still holds up well today. For better of my opinion or worst, I recommend a watch if you're a fan of these 2 main characters or just like the wild west implemented in an anime (or you just wanna watch some random short shows out of your own enjoyment, such as myself). -wrote by yours truly. What the hell y'all I have been bamboozled! Swindled! Gypped! If you've seen this show and have read my reviews or ever looked at my profile then you know what I'm about to say....this shit is INCOMPLETE! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls this series stops at thirteen episodes with no resolution, conclusion or closure and you are left with one thought in your head “WTF???”. I'm not going to spoil things for those who might still want to watch this title, but as far as I know there is no sequel, there is no OVA, there's probably a manga but who gives a ... fuck? I'm not gonna read it. So yeah 13 episodes, you watch it, it ends....you double check your playlist to see if maybe video-player skipped an episode, it didn't so you feel like you have been [bleep]-teased! Sorry, Leiji Matsumoto or not, it's gonna get low marks from me!

The art and animation, in relation to the time it was created which is about 10 years ago, isn't that bad. It's was actually very interesting. I'd even say kinda novel....kinda. It's not the type of art or animation that draws you in or tries to make the you, the viewer a part of the experience. No, they definitely wanted the viewer to be behind that 4th wall looking in, as if reading a comic book. I would even go as far as to say this series was more like an “animated comic book” than it was just a standard anime. The outlines were HEAVILY inked, everything appeared cartoonish [yes I know an anime by definition is a cartoon] but what I mean is that the art was not drawn with “realism” as an objective, the art appeared a lot more farcical than you average anime. Even when things appeared to have dimension, it only looked like the placed a cardboard cut-out of a [flat] character in front of a painted cardboard [flat] backdrop. It's not totally original, but it's not a totally played out effect either.

I loved the music of the series, both the OP and ED have songs that I would listen to on a causal basis. My gripe about the music is that it totally doesn't fit the series, at all. That OP song belongs in a much more contemporary anime, still shonen, but has some comedy. Maybe something more along the lines of Full Metal Panic perhaps. The ending song was definitely shojo or what's the term for the more mature female viewers? All I can think of is NANA when I hear it. Neither one of these songs have anything to do with a dusty western parody anime with vulgar language and nudity.
I watched the series in English dub, the big draw for me of course was Steven Blum [Spike Spiegel], everyone else was OK too.

However whenever I think of the story aspect of it, I get pissed off because it's effing INCOMPLETE! I hate incomplete shows, cliffhangers, open-enders or whatever you wanna call it. Again, I'm not going to say how it ends, you can see that for yourself and maybe stuff like this doesn't affect everyone but it's definitely one of my pet peeves. Which is a shame because it really wasn't bad storyline; the idea of searching for Japanese people in the old west or for Oriental treasure was a good idea. I loved how this series tried to take on heavy topics like ignorance, racism and sexism....with humor, albeit a very cynical type of humor.

A lot could be said about the character depictions in this show and maybe it can shed some light at to why anime characters look more like Caucasians than Asians. People can disagree as many times as they want, but in this series, Harlock is confirmed to not be Asian. And tho the name Shinunora, implies she might be Asian but it's proven later on that she is not. She's actually European. And everyone is just flabbergasted that Tochiro has such a “good-looking” sister [Who's drawn the same way as Shinunora and all the other white people. So it's pretty easy to conclude that anyone tall and good-looking isn't perceived as Asian at all but if they are, then they generally pass as “White” which in reality, is hardly possible.....So do the Japanese think of themselves as white or is there some identity crisis or self-loathing going on there? That's kinda all I was getting from looking at these characters...that, and perhaps the fact that Shinunora is ALWAYS naked [which I found very funny] and Tochiro is always loud and annoying [which is not common Japanese behavior].

But ultimately, my verdict is no verdict beyond, meh! It's incomplete!

Not a good show at all, can't believe I watched this as a child when it came out.
If the characters & art style were not pulled from a more popular source, literally no one would have heard about this series. The characters are very generic 70's stereotypes: cool guy, hot mysterious girl, obnoxious comedy relief. The twist is the short funny guy is the lead. This could have been interesting; seeing an under-dog\unloved outcast get treated poorly, but always manage to pull through. They take the plot too far, beyond realistic human behavior. Their choices make no sense to the point You can't relate to ... his struggles, because they are so blown out of proportion & over the top.
Shorty is also dumb, creepy & unlikable. He smiles, leers, & even laughs when the female lead is being assaulted by the enemy(s)
The female lead is really strange. She's drawn beautifully & the artist always makes it a point to give her at least one full body nude scene. Nice. What's not nice, She gets attacked and raped more than once in the show. This never seems to affect her mood in any way, if anything her character weirdly wears it as a badge of honor. She will even brag about it to the other 2 leads, after.
If you wanted constant assault on women to prove how dangerous the wild west is, that's fine. What's messed up however, is how the creators obviously used this as a fetish fantasy. To parade around this subject like the victims enjoyed it is extremely distasteful & a bit sickening.
The cool guy was fine, he doesn't do much at all.
There's a sister character & other than that just about everyone else is a one off. They are all very predictable.
Abrupt ending, no resolution. Very cringe & laughable. It's definitely a "so bad it's good" fascination.
Make a prediction of what you think will happen in the show, You will always guess correctly (because this is not a good show)
