Synopsis

Tamako knows just about everything there is to know about mochi, the traditional Japanese dessert treats. When she's not attending her first year of high school, she even invents new flavors and varieties for Tama-ya, her family's mochi shop. School and growing up, on the other hand, are some things that she's still trying to find the right recipe for. But with the help of her best friends Kanna and Midori, two girls whose parents run businesses in the same shopping district, Tamako's determined to make the best of things. It's complicated though, especially when it comes to emotions and her relationship with her best boy friend Mochizou, whose family runs a rival mochi shop. And lately, Midori's been feeling a little odd about her feelings towards Tamako as well. And what's up with that strange bird fluttering around, the one that speaks fluent Japanese? It's all very mysterious and overwhelming, but at least Tamako always has one thing she can count on: No matter if your day's been good or bad, there's certain to be something sugary and delicious waiting at the end of every adventure whenever you take a walk through Tamako Market!

There's something about anime which allows us to derive entertainment from the mundane events of an ordinary person. Coincidentally, ordinary is the best way to describe Tamako Market.

Starring the young lady Tamako and a flamboyant talking bird, Tamako Market is yet another anime that attempts to cash in on the slice of life phenomenon. It is not an anime that prospers through the strength of its plot, setting, or themes, but instead subsists through the cuteness of its characters. Should we criticize an anime for not going beyond that? Maybe not. But there is certainly a problem when such a simple anime still falls read more

Before watching Tamako Market, I had to prepare myself. I mean cold showers, a critical state of mind stemmed by delirium, and eating a cup of ramen filled with enough hot sauce to burn my tonsils off. Distraction from the cuteness is key—because the cuteness is paramount. It springs up in all corners, in every moe smile, in every darned bit of music, in every bright color. Beneath a tactful disguise of a thousand hues of pink, a conniving truth festers. If you let your guard down you will never see it.

I’m here to tell you the truth. And the truth is that Tamako Market read more

Tamako Market may be derived from the same recipe as KyoAni's other SOL anime, but its taste is a little off.

As always, my reviews are spoiler free.

Kyoto Animation, the makers of the wildly successful Haruhi and K-On! series, realized something a few months after K-On! finished airing. Cute girls doing cute things (afterwards CGDCT; call it "moe" if you want to, that's another argument entirely) really sells. The following seasons, and to the day that this review is being written, there have been dozens of series that tried to ride the CGDCT wave all the way to the bank. Most have tried read more

“You used to be much more... "muchier". You've lost your muchness.” - Alice in Wonderland.

Not that I'm a fan of that series, nor that I even know the story (please don't shoot me), but this perfectly describes studio Kyoto in a ball. They've been famous for making various key adaptions such as Clannad and Kanon, and other series being described as far as controversial like Haruhi. But lately, they've been said that the rising hill is sloping downwards now, and Tamako Market contributes to more evidence for that hill, with less and less 'muchness'. That hill consists of weaker attention for the story, and with read more

Tamako Market, K-On!, and Yearly Traffic Accident Report share one similarity. They tell story of something happening somewhere, whether it's a club room, a shopping district, or interstate highway.

You watch Tamako Market, you know what the district committee comes up with. You watch K-On!, you know five girls in music club spent 12 out of 13 episodes NOT playing music. You watch Yearly Traffic Accident Report, you know how many dumb rich kids run their Ferrari off the cliff each year. It's pretty much the same thing, a concentrated Slice of Life.

The main girl in Tamako Market is basically a blue-eyed Chitanda Eru. Their personalities are also very similar. Plot-wise these two animes don't have much in common, but none the less they're both quite fun!

Same art style with cute girls and lots of fun. Story is similar: there is no stressfull moments in these shows. You just watch them to relax. Main characters and their relationships with other people are same

While not entirely similar, both series has the premise of working at a local area to make a living. The characters from both series live their common lives in a slice of life like pattern.

There is also some animals from both series.

The atmosphere from both these series is also light and pleasant to get into. With that, they have tons of comedy and fun moments.

-Both girls work in a store in the shopping district
-Both girls are optimistic and happy
-In both stories there's a guy that likes them but can't muster up the nerve to say so
Soredmo Machi the form a band and in Tamako market they cheer with batons.
Both girls also seem drawn to interesting and troublesome events.
Both really cute stories

Its not exactly the same, but there are quite a few similarities. The dim witted main character and the humor are similar. Although, SxS contains less plot and is just like comedic mild office romance. The best part about the jokes are not when they happen, its the characters reactions.
