With Aikatsu’s third season finally spreading its wings, I figured now would be an appropriate time to share my thoughts on the series thus far. The now-bestselling multimedia franchise (already raking in billions of yen per year) may seem intimidating at first glance, but it’s a lot friendlier than it looks.

Starlight Academy is a school built for aspiring idols; a school so influential that it’s dominated by none other than Kanzaki Mizuki, one of the top (and most mysterious) idols in the world. Brave, elegant, and monolithic, she lights up the world around her, inspiring adults and children alike. When Hoshimiya Ichigo’s idol-obsessed friend, Aoi, read more

Note: This review is for the first season of the show, which is the first 50 episodes and was originally its own entry on MAL. I don't plan to change this review, but when the show finishes, I'll add an extra bit at the end expressing my thoughts on everything else.

When I was first taught about "idols" as a child, we knew them as false gods. Then I started watching anime and I realized it's practically the same thing for Japan.

Aikatsu! follows the idol trend of the past few years. These are shows about cute young girls singing and dancing that look like they're for read more

First of all, the anime is bringing down logic. For an example, Shibuki Ran is a professional idol and yet Ichigo and Aoi are higher than Ran. Aikatsu8 was full of BS, instead of the higher-ups, they put rookies! The fact that rookies have surpassed higher-ups is just stupid.

Second of all, characters such as Yurika, Kaede, Shion, Ran etc have REALLY less showtime. Season 3 is about rookies trying to become top idols and they are supposed to give more showtime to them more, BUT when they want to show that the top idols being their seniors, it's mostly Ichigo, Aoi, Otome or Sakura. They read more

“My name is Hoshiyama Ichigo. I’m your ordinary first year middle school student. Back then, I would have never imagined that I, me, someone like me could become an idol!”

Story (7/10)
Aikatsu short for Aidoru Katsudou! (Idol Activities) is a collectible card game created by Bandai which revolves around using cards featuring various designer clothes to help aspiring idols make their dreams come true. The story tells of Hoshiyama, Ichigo as she slowly rises to the top with her best friend Kiriya, Aoi and new member of the group *drum rolls* Shibuki, Ran. I know what you’re thinking… “Not another anime about idols.” Which I can read more

Anime: Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream
Almost the exact same storyline. The only main difference is one is about becoming Idols and another is figure skating.

Anime: Love Live! School Idol Project
Both are about girls trying to become idols. Both also have similar animation during the dance scenes.

Anime: PriPara
Both shows are about cute young girls who start from the bottom of the idol world and try to climb their way up. There are some similar archetypes such as the main characters have never practiced before but have some talent at being idols, and both shows have an elegant and mysterious popular idol that the newcomers are aiming to reach.

Anime: AKB0048
The main characters in Aikatsu and AKB0048 happen to have spunky, cheerful personalities. A friend happens to introduce them to the world of idols and they start on their own journey to become an idol, growing as a person as they do. The styles are different, but the outfits in both series are designed in a nice manner. One of the great things is that both shows vary from the idol genre in ways one wouldn't expect, one being also of the card game genre and the other a sci-fi. The music for both series is also beautiful and the wide cast of characters means  read more

Anime: Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
In addition to both shows featuring singing/dancing as prominent plot points, the main three girls give off a similar "feel". The casts of both are also really charismatic - while the plot in both shows isn't great, it's fun just to hang out with these girls and see the scrapes they get into. Recommended for anybody who wants a sweet, simple good time, though Mermaid Melody has far more romantic/ecchi overtones.

Anime: Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000%
Aikatsu is pretty much Uta no Princess Sama.

Why? Because both anime take place in idol training school, and they are boarding schools. They also have a character who is interested in a music star. They also have characters who are music stars. Just flip the gender and they are exactly alike! So if you like Aikatsu, you will love Uta no Prince Sama!
