On the surface, D. Gray-Man sounds like just another shonen anime with an organization of good guys with special weapons fighting evil monsters. Yeah, that's the base of it, but DGM turns into something more, something deeper than many other shonen anime series. In fact, I feel that it sneaks around seinen territory.
While the setting is standard shonen all the way, you'll find yourself surprised when watching this show. It starts off a bit slow, with many fights, small arcs (~1-4 episodes) and nothing special to it. However, it quickly picks up, and some way into season 2 or 3, DGM starts to show its qualities. The story soon blends in action, emotions and last but not least, realistic power-ups. The story is overall more deep and serious than most shonen anime, and builds up and only gets better towards the end, where it meets it demise with an unfortunate canceling, which, together with its slow start, may ruin the experience of the show for many.
The characters are without a doubt the strongest point of DGM. I mentioned earlier that DGM is sneaking about in seinen territory, and the reason for this is the characters. They don't think "You bastard! I need to suddenly get stronger so I can defeat you" and get stronger and defeat the bad guys. The characters here aren't all about brawling against the evil guys. They have emotions. Emotions which they have to face. And that's what makes it into a semi-seinen series; it's a bit more character-driven and not so much plot-driven.
The animation quality of DGM is also astounding. There's a lot of detail put into the environments, and character designs are great too. Special effects are really great, and the same can be said about lighting effects. When you consider that DGM is a bit dark and serious, the coloring is really great too; it's just as dark as it needs to be to fit in with the series.
The soundtrack is definitely the weakest point of DGM. The background music isn't especially memorable, and not really great. I hope they decide to get a new soundtrack soon so I can get something better. Also, using the same stuff for 100 episodes is a lot. OP and ED themes are okay though, and I like the more heavy style of the OP themes - it fits with the tone of the show. Voice acting and sound effects are great though.
Final thing which I should mention is that the fillers in DGM are actually good. "What fillers?" you may ask if you've watched the show. To be honest, I asked the same question when I first heard that there was a lot of filler in the show. The thought never even came close to my mind. So that's a plus.
All in all, I feel that DGM mixes shonen and seinen into something special and unique. It may not appeal to all shonen fans, but those of you who like more serious action anime will enjoy DGM even more.
To 'Not Helpful' voters (and you 'Helpful' voters too): Feedback greatly appreciated =)

This is my review of the episodes which I have seen which is up through 58.
Im not going to dull people with a summary of the story its on anidb and other such websites and they do a better job than I would. However if you want a short summarized version of what Im going to say, here it is: Want a series that start out as typical shounen series that transform into a powerful epic that twists and turns in unexpected ways? Then I would recommend D.Grey-man.
The story starts off pretty good, but takes some time before it kicks into overdrive so be prepared. I found myself liking the series, but for the first 40 episodes or so it felt pretty mediocre after that point the story starts to flesh out and go in some pretty unexpected directions. I felt probably one of the stronger points of the story was how episodes which appeared like fillers at first turned out to introduce important characters which return again and play very important roles in terms of the story. At heart though D.Grey-man is still a shounen so dont watch it if you absolutely hate these types of series, but it has a different taste than other series such as Naruto or One Piece.
The Animation is top notch and it improves as the series progresses. Characters facial expressions are superb especially when considering the huge cast of both good and bad guys. I love the unique look that the bad guys bring to this anime: evil, yet at the same time they are appealing in their own way. The same is also true of the good guys cool but, at times, ridiculous. Any filler episode had at least average animated action scenes. However whenever the series gets to the story pertinent battles the action scenes are stepped up a notch.
The sound is by far the most troublesome area. All the intro or ending songs are excellent and fit the series very well. However during the actual episode the music is far less memorable. Not that it is absent or that it is per say bad, but there was never a moment where I really noticed it particularly like I have in other series. The sound effects themselves are alright, but there are several characters with really annoying sound effects attached to them when they use their abilities and that is by far my biggest complaint worth noting.
The characters are by far D.Grey-mans strongest point. They have an absolutely lovable cast. From the main characters to the side characters there hasnt been a single one I found annoying or wishing they would go away. Quite the opposite I found many times hoping these characters would make a return and too my surprise many did. The series takes its time to flesh out as much as possible all the characters, of course with the emphasis being on the side characters, but I felt satisfied with all of the side characters back stories as well. It really doesnt get much better than the characters, in terms of growth and depth, than in this series.
The Enjoyment of this series is really watching the characters grow. This in my opinion is where D.Grey-man strongly resembles most other shounen series, but not in a bad way seeing as I love these types of series. The story is there in the back of your mind, but in the usually the focus is on the characters. I have found that as the series has progressed I began enjoying it more and more much like an acquired taste.
Overall D.Grey-man does start out like a standard shounen. However after the first 40 episodes I found it getting increasingly more fun to sit and watch. And while its hard to say what the future will bring the series is entering what I would consider the second story arch and it has gotten really good, much in the same way that Bleach or Naruto did. So basically if you like shounen then you will dig this series, but if you typically dont go for those type of series I would still recommend giving D.Grey-man a try because it does vary from your typical series enough to make it a unique experience.

Similar style of storytelling. Black Order kinda like State Alchemists etc. Both Ed and Allen have arms that aren't their original arms.
Both shows take place in about the same time period (early 20th century for FMA, late 19th century for D. Gray-man) in Europe in a world similar to our own. They are both about unique abilities, with an organization of alchemists in FMA and an organization of exorcists in D. Gray-man. They are Shounen as well as some comedy mixed in and are both very enjoyable to watch.
Now i know that people might ask why even bother? But i i thought that someone new to anime might need some help. Now the connection from FMA to D.Gray Man might be easy to see (they both have a messed up arm). All of the connections are not so cut and dry. Ed and Allen are very similar. first of all they carry a huge wait on their shoulders and they hate being called names. there are other similarities but they might ruin the surprise.
Both series are about someone who tried to bring someone important to them back to life… and failed. Allen Walker (D.Gray-Man) was cursed and Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist) lost his right arm and left leg, which could be considered a curse. After that they both joined an organisation. Allen Walker = Black Order; Edward Elric = State Military. They both seem to have a cranky teacher (sensei).
Last but not least; they are both short… ^^
The main characters both seem similar and their beliefs are also similar. The excitement of the plot and the action are very the same. Both animes share the same excitement and it will be a very nice experience.
Both of these animes have been compared in the past and for good reason too. D. Gray Man and Full Metal Alchemist both have a strong main character with a sad, messed up past but even so, they gain strength from this. Both Edward and Allen are going for a goal and to do so, they must overcome many scary, supernatural challenges. Edward has to might the Homunculus while Allen has to fight demons/akuma, the Noah, and the Millenium Earl. Both shows are on my top 5...this is my recommendation for both D. Gray Man fans who have yet to see Full Metal Alchemist and also for Full Metal Alchemist fans who haven't seen D. Gray Man. *note* D. Gray Man starts off slow, but, it will get REALLY good really fast after that.
Young heroes whose childhoods are marked by tragic events, their limbs altered to become weapons, fighting to redress an error in their past: these are the main elements that tie Fullmetal Alchemist and D. Gray-man together. Plus, both series draw a world that resembles ours with some crucial differences, deliberately dabbling in anachronisms. Both have a focus on action that does not hinder character development, allowing for doses of humour to lighten up the mood.
Allen Walker is like a mix between Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. He has Edward headstrong personality with Al's compassion. He even looks like them (just with gray hair and slightly older). He also has a messed up arm like Ed. The Black Order is very reminiscent of the National Alchemists organization.
Any Fullmetal Alchemist fan would love D.Gray-man. The characters are similar, the themes are similar. The difference is that D.Gray-man is going to be a long anime and the storyline is slightly different. A must watch!
The main characters of each of these shows end up losing someone who is very precious to them, changing their destiny in the process. Also, they both have unique arms due to those events.
Alchemist organization is familar to Black Order imo. Main charas- Ed and All are short teenagers-ppl make fun of their height lol. both of dem has unusuall arms and they fight because of paren's loss.
Homunculus is very similar - Akuma.
These two anime are so similar it's scary. I've avoided watching D Gray Man before because it looked too much like any other generic shonen, but only 10 episodes in and it hooked me good. If you liked Fullmetal, don't hesitate to give it's darker sibling D Gray a try.
Well, for starters both these titles are the shounen, action-packed with PG-13 violence type. And there's a really obvious similarity between the main characters in these two shows--both have 'the arm'. That's right, if Allen Walker has his Anti-akuma weapon arm, then Edward Elric has his mechanical arm. Speaking of characters, both titles have unique variation among their character and you never get tired of them. What I mean is that in FMA, the Alchemists had different abilities same with the Exorcists in DGM. Each of the characters had their own way in contributing to the unfolding of the plot--which makes the plot (for both anime shows) really unpredictable, thus exciting. So, if you're life has been dull and you've been craving for some action, then go watch these two shows. They both left me with no regrets and they were definitely not a waste time for me.
Let's see, both Edward Elric and Allen Walker tried to bring the dead to life with devastating consequences. Besides that, they joined a military organization and look their arms!! One has a metal arm the other has a..unique arm which doubles as a weapon. Both are really young. Oh, both Ed and Allen has lazy/cracky superiors (Roy and Komui) too.
In both Animes there are many similar ideas. Firstly, both have a darker, more bleak, mood at times and at others a very light, cheery comic mood. The Characters have lost an important relative due to their own mistakes. Alchemy is very similar to Innocence as each exemplify different traits depending on the user. Lastly, both Edward Elric and Allen Walker have masters that they are completely afraid of.
Both main chars fight with 1 of their hands and they transform their hand to battle. Plus the mood of the shows and the scenrys and era are also similar. Then they both go every where by trains. Then they both are part of a military type organization with people like them. And they both have a dead family member.
Both have main characters with arms that functions as weapons. Both characters' childhoods featured a tragic loss for them, and the retribution they faced for trying to bring back the people they lost taint them to this very day.
Both protagonists turn one of their loved ones into a monstrous creature. Both Edward from FMA and Allen from DGM have an arm that is not normal. Also both stories revolves around looking for precious stones.
it has a very similar feel and progression to it. just trust me if you like one youll like the other
CREEPY similar. First...
1)Edward/Allen suffer consequences for trying to bring dead back to life.
2)Both have teachers they are afraid of: Izumi/Cross (Hm, I wonder what would happen if they met each other? XD)
3) Komui reminds me of Hughes, what with his attitude to family members.
4) Edward/Allen both have special arms.
5) Noah family is like the homunculi; the way they just kind of come as collectibles ^^ Oh, and I believe there are seven Noah/Homunculi?
6) Lenalee kind of like Winry- aka romantic tention between her and the hero.
7) Dark Order similar to State Alchemists- most of their members are pretty young and what they do serves the community.
8) Exorcists=Alchemists- although not every alchemist is in State, they're both "selective practices", per se.
9) Milliennium Earl could be a personification of "the Gate".
10) And last but not least, the mangas were published in the same year. 0.0
I believe FMA is better overall, though. -nod-
Both shows are about 15 year old main characters with a fake arm and a tendency to be referred to as "beansprout". They both take place in the 1800's, though D.Gray-man has a more gothic feel. If Fullmetal Alchemist and Tim Burton had a lovechild, it would be D.Gray-man.
The main characters are both child prodigies, excelling in combat and hiding a mysterious past. Edward Elric joins up with the Military of Amestris, while Allen Walker joins the Dark Religious Organization. Both series include comedy at some times as well as blood and death at others. They can be shockingly similar to each other in some ways, while being different enough that they each have a unique flavor.
Firstly, both main characters have some sort of abilities (Ed - alchemist, Allen - Exorcist), they are both nicknamed as "short" and both hate being called that. Secondly, both series features the main character being part of an organisation/order (Ed - State Alchemist, Allen - Black Order), fighting against an opposing group of enemies (Ed - Homunculi, Allen - Noah). Thirdly, both series have a lot of action and fighting scenes, bound to keep you entertained.
Very similar feel. Both have a setting with the feel of Industrial Revolution England. Both protagonists have a dark past that led to deformations/enhancements to their bodies. Both join organizations designed for people with special abilities to maintain order. They also have similar art styles, though D.Gray-Man is a little more "realistic."

Both are Shonen titles with darker less cliche villains.
Both shows feature broken protagonists and enagmatic yet mysterious antagonists.
Both feature a nod to Bushido with the individuality of their weapons (be it Zanpakutoh or innocence).
Both shows feature a mirroing of their enemy, ie. Dark Matter vs Innocence or Vaizard and Arrancar.
Both shows have strong support characters whose support can steal away from the main character.
They are both well written moving between light and dark moments with a re-evaluation of whether the enemies are actually evil or just victims.
Well... Both are adventures of inumerous characters, each one with his own power and distinct personality, against the evil guys.
I didn't get this part of the anime yet, but people said me that it has fillers like all those other similar series (as Naruto, Dragon Ball, etc...). For me, these animes are all the same after all...
both has its own serious moments against their fight against evil or their goal, with a bit of comedy to lighten the mood up from time to time.
Both are in a group of supernatural power fighting against evil in Bleach they fight Hollows and in D.gray-man they fight Akuma ( Demons ). If u liked Bleach you will like D.gray-man ^^
Both series have the same style.. A young boy who tries to gain more power in order to save good people on earth. Story and characters are a little similiar also.. So you wont regret it.
If you liked "Spiritual Energy (reiatsu)" .. You should definitely try "innocence"!
both the story, characters, and organizations are very similar
Both are fighting akuma or evil using there own methods in one its shinigami in the other its exocists both shows are great
Bth great shounen series.
Both main chars belong to an organisation such as Shinigamis or Order. Then each shinigami/exorcist have different ability and fight against Hollows/Akumas. Then in the shows the chars get stronger and have long fights with very powerful monsters. The monsters evolves to a stage where they are hellish strong.
Both are action/shonen series, with a group of good guys slowly fighting their way through the ranks of the bad guys, powering up in the process. While D.Gray-Man is often more serious than Bleach, they both have their moments of comedy to lighten up the mood when needed. Also, >100 % synch rate = bankai all the way.
Both have Demons, and similar fighting with nice power ups. Bleach is more slow paced, but they are both good.
Both about an organization of people with spiritual abilities that are supposed to destroy evil spirits
Both protagonists hunt after bad spirits and have extraordinary powers.
In both Bleach and D.Gray Man, the plot revolves round the protagonist and his friends as they combat an evil force to safe the people of the world. The anagonists are very mysterious yet likable characters and appear an unbeatable force. It is up to the protagonist and friends to try to beat them while they both fight with a hidden power within themselves.
Hero with strong/unusual powers, battles and many bishounens. Although I think D.Gray-man's animation looks better and Allen has more 'dark' secrets.
Akuma are like hollow.
Exorciste are like shinigami
Noah are like espada
if you like bleach most likely you'll like DGrayMan i mean it startsout boring like some animes but its halirouls and the action in it isnt so bad the down side is the ending is like a cliffy due to the fact the author got sick so unless your willing to wait for her to get better dont watch it and get disapointed
Both of these shows focus on the supernatural and the trials and moral dilemmas the heros go through. As both series progress, it becomes clear there is more to the heros than meets the eye. Both Allen Walker and Ichigo Kurosaki are different than the other people around them and they try to deal with those differences while saving others and protecting their friends/comrades and what they truly believe in
